The rice weevil and maize weevil are the usual culprits in whole grains, rice, maize meal and samp, and the larvae develop hidden inside the kernel. Red and confused flour beetles feed on flour, bran, cake mixes and broken grain, and the sawtoothed grain beetle gets into cereals, oats, dried fruit and nuts. The cigarette beetle and drugstore beetle are small, round, reddish beetles that turn up in spices, dried herbs, tea, pet food and even tobacco. Indian meal moth larvae spin silk webbing through muesli, nuts, birdseed and pet food, and are the moths you see flying out of the pantry. Khapra beetle is a serious quarantine pest worldwide, and any suspected find in a commercial store should be reported rather than treated quietly.
Which stored product pest situation are you in?
The insects are much the same in a family pantry and a distribution centre. What changes is how much stock is at risk, who might find the problem, and how quickly it has to be closed off. Find the description closest to yours.
A family pantry
Most home cases trace back to one or two items. The job is quick if you let us open everything, including the spice rack and the sweets cupboard, and slow if half the pantry has been thrown out in a panic before anyone looked. Keep the worst packet aside in a sealed bag so we can confirm what it is.
Restaurants, cafés and takeaways
Dry stores in a busy kitchen turn over fast, which helps, but they are packed to the ceiling with flour, crumbs, rice and spices, and the bottom shelf can go untouched for months. Drawer runners, the gap under a prep fridge and the space behind a pizza oven collect spilt product that keeps beetles fed long after the main stock is clean.
Bakeries, delis and spice shops
Flour dust gets everywhere in a bakery: inside mixer housings, under proving cabinets, along conveyor frames. Delis and spice shops that sell dried chillies, paprika, herbal teas and nuts loose or in paper bags face a different mix, often small round beetles that bore through packaging.
Pet shops, feed stores and stables
Birdseed, dog biscuits, horse feed and chicken pellets come in big bags and often sit in sheds with gaps under the doors. Meal moths and grain beetles thrive here, and rodents usually follow the same food, so we look for both on the same visit.
Warehouses and distribution centres
Stores in Epping, Montague Gardens and Airport Industria hold pallets of packaged food that can sit for weeks. Insects arrive in an inbound consignment and spread along a racking bay before anyone opens a carton. Most sites manage this with scheduled inspections and monitoring through a pest control contract, so a trend shows up on paper before it shows up in a customer's order.
Before you phone: what we will ask
Having these answers ready shortens the call and lets us bring the right equipment the first time.
- What the insect looks like. A WhatsApp photo with a coin next to it for size is ideal.
- Which products are affected, and whether they were open or still sealed.
- When those products were bought or delivered and, for a business, the batch or lot numbers.
- Any traps or glue boards you already have out, and what they have caught.
- For food businesses, when your next audit or health inspection is due.
- Whether any stock is high value or under a customer hold, so we know what must not be moved or opened.
Three things that make a stored product job harder
Pallets against walls. If racking sits flush against the wall, the strip behind it never gets cleaned or checked, and it fills with spilt grain. A gap wide enough to walk a torch along is all we ask.
Returns and damaged stock kept on site. A cage of split bags waiting for a credit note is a breeding ground. Get it out of the building, or at least away from good stock.
Mixed storage. Pet food on the same shelf as flour, or birdseed beside breakfast cereal, gives an infestation an easy route from one product to the next.
Using the suburb list
Pick your area below for local notes. If you run a storeroom in an industrial area such as Montague Gardens, start there. For our full method, see stored product pest control in Cape Town, or phone 021 012 5825 for a free quote.
Quick answers
Are these insects harmful if I eat them by accident?
They are not known to be dangerous in small amounts, but infested food is contaminated and should not be eaten or sold.
What are pheromone traps?
Small sticky traps baited with a scent that attracts a specific moth or beetle. They show whether the insects are still around and help us measure how well the treatment worked.
Do you work in warehouses and food factories?
Yes. We do inspections, crack and crevice treatment, pheromone monitoring and scheduled visits, with reports you can use for food safety audits.
