What City Bowl homes deal with
In the CBD you have office towers, heritage buildings, hotels and hundreds of restaurants and cafés. Up the slopes are Victorian and Edwardian semis with wooden floors and corrugated iron roofs, along with newer apartment blocks. Old buildings have gaps, voids and old drains that rodents and cockroaches use, while flats share ducts and refuse rooms.
The mountain rises right behind the suburbs, with the Company's Garden and the slopes of Table Mountain National Park providing green corridors. Winter rain runs hard down the slopes, and the South-Easter brings the famous tablecloth and blows litter around the streets. The heat traps in the bowl on still summer days.
The pests we get called out for most in City Bowl
Rats are the big one, living in old drains, restaurant lanes and the Company's Garden. German cockroaches are common in restaurants and flats. Pigeons on buildings and bed bugs in hotels and rentals round out the main issues.
Rats and mice
Brown rats live in the old sewer network and the service lanes behind Long and Bree Street restaurants, and the Company's Garden has long had a visible rat and squirrel population. On the slopes, roof rats run along the joined roofs of terraced semis and drop into ceilings.
Cockroaches, ants and other crawlers
German cockroaches are the staple of restaurant and hotel kitchens, and they move between flats along shared risers. American cockroaches emerge from old floor drains at night, and fishmoths chew wallpaper and books in damp Victorian rooms.
Flies, mosquitoes and wasps
Fruit flies are a constant behind bars and coffee counters, and houseflies follow the bins in the lanes. Clothes moths are a quiet menace in older homes with wool carpets and rugs.
Fleas and bed bugs
Bed bugs are the big biting pest here because of the hotels, backpackers and short-term flats. Pigeons nesting on window ledges can also send bird mites into the bedroom behind.
Wood borer and timber
Victorian and Edwardian houses in the bowl often have Oregon pine floors and old roof timbers with past borer damage. An inspection tells you if it is still active, and a beetle certificate is a normal part of transfer.
Pantry pests
Restaurants, bakeries, delis and coffee roasters need routine monitoring for flour beetles, cigarette beetles and moths. At home, pantry moths in flour and dried fruit are the usual story.
Hygiene and disinfection
Offices, hotels, gyms and restaurants regularly ask for disinfection after an illness outbreak or before reopening after a shutdown. After-hours visits keep it out of trading time.
Birds
Feral pigeons roost on heritage facades, signage and window ledges right across the CBD, and their droppings stain stonework. Netting, spikes and post-and-wire systems protect buildings without harming the birds.
How a visit works
We start with an inspection, because the right answer for ants is different from the right answer for rats, and guessing wastes money. Where we can, we go least-toxic first: gel baits for cockroaches and ants, tamper-resistant bait stations and snap traps for rodents, and insect growth regulators that break the breeding cycle. Residual sprays and dusts are applied only where they are needed, such as wall voids, cracks and roof spaces, not sprayed across every surface. Proofing is part of the job, so we point out or seal the gaps that let pests in. You get a post-treatment report so you know what was used and where.

- Inspection
A technician looks for the source, the extent of the problem and the entry points, not only the pests you can see.
- Treatment plan
We explain what we propose to use, where, and what you need to do before and after, with a free quote.
- Targeted treatment
We treat with the least-toxic effective products, focused on harbourage and entry points.
- Report and follow-up

Questions from City Bowl
Do the rats in the City Bowl come from the Company's Garden?
The garden does carry a lot of rats, but homes and businesses further away are usually dealing with rats from old drains and restaurant lanes. We find where they are actually living, then bait outside and seal the gaps they use to get in.
Why does my Gardens or Vredehoek flat keep getting cockroaches?
Usually because German cockroaches are moving in from neighbouring flats through shared plumbing risers and electrical ducts. Treating the units around yours at the same time, and sealing gaps around pipes under the sink, gives a far longer result.
Is your pest control safe for children and pets?
We use the least-toxic effective option first and place baits in tamper-resistant stations or in cracks where children and pets cannot reach. We will tell you if anyone needs to stay out of a room and for how long.
How soon can you come out?
Our average turnaround is about 48 hours, though it varies with the season. After-hours and weekend visits can be arranged on request.
