Pest control in Pinelands, as we see it
Many homes are original cottages from the 1920s and 1930s, some still with thatched roofs, along with later brick houses and townhouse complexes. Big gardens and overhanging trees give rodents and squirrels easy access to roofs. Older timber floors and roof structures are prone to borer. Outbuildings, garages and garden sheds are common hiding places.
Pinelands is full of mature pines, oaks and green belts, with the Black River and Raapenberg bird sanctuary on its western edge. Winter rain keeps gardens damp, and summers are warm with the South-Easter. Green spaces and water attract birds and insects.
The pests we get called out for most in Pinelands
Squirrels and rats in roofs are the most common calls, along with thatch and wood borer problems. Mosquitoes near the river and Egyptian geese in parks are regular issues. Fishmoths and ants appear in older homes.
Rats and mice
Grey squirrels nest in roofs and thatch, and roof rats use trees to reach ceilings. Sealing roof gaps and trimming branches helps prevent re-entry.
Cockroaches, ants and other crawlers
Fishmoths do well in older homes, and ants come indoors in dry weather. Spiders and crickets are common in leafy gardens.
Flies, mosquitoes and wasps
Mosquitoes come off the Black River and Raapenberg side on still summer evenings, and fishpond corners breed a few too. Wasps like the sheltered eaves under big trees.
Fleas and bed bugs
Fleas come in with pets that roam the green belts. Bird mites can enter homes from nests in thatch.
Wood borer and timber
Thatched roofs and old timber floors are prone to borer and thatch beetles. Beetle certificates are especially important here when homes sell.
Pantry pests
Weevils and Indian meal moth turn up in pantries with bird seed, nuts and flour kept for months. A quick sort of the back shelf twice a year catches it early.
Hygiene and disinfection
Retirement homes, schools and the office parks on the Pinelands edge are our usual sanitising clients. Landlords sometimes book a fog after a pet-owning tenant moves out, mainly for fleas.
Birds
Egyptian geese use the parks and green belts, and pigeons nest in roofs. Bird proofing roofs and thatch edges reduces nesting.
How a visit works
We start with an inspection, because the right answer for ants is different from the right answer for rats, and guessing wastes money. Where we can, we go least-toxic first: gel baits for cockroaches and ants, tamper-resistant bait stations and snap traps for rodents, and insect growth regulators that break the breeding cycle. Residual sprays and dusts are applied only where they are needed, such as wall voids, cracks and roof spaces, not sprayed across every surface. Proofing is part of the job, so we point out or seal the gaps that let pests in. You get a post-treatment report so you know what was used and where.

From the technician
People often assume that a clean house cannot have pests. Rodents and cockroaches care about warmth, shelter and access, and even a spotless home can give them all three through a gap behind the stove.
Supermarket foggers are one of the least effective things you can buy for cockroaches. They tend to push the insects deeper into wall voids and appliances, which makes a professional treatment harder afterwards.

Questions from Pinelands
Do Pinelands thatched cottages get borer?
Yes, older thatch and timber often show borer activity. We inspect the thatch and roof timbers and advise on treatment.
Why are there squirrels in my Pinelands roof?
The tall trees give them easy access to roofs, and they nest in warm, dry spaces. We remove them and seal entry points.
Is your pest control safe for children and pets?
We use the least-toxic effective option first and place baits in tamper-resistant stations or in cracks where children and pets cannot reach. We will tell you if anyone needs to stay out of a room and for how long.
How soon can you come out?
Our average turnaround is about 48 hours, though it varies with the season. After-hours and weekend visits can be arranged on request.
