Pest Control by suburb

We cover all 24 suburbs on our Cape Flats route. Each suburb page covers what we find there and what works for those streets and buildings.

What Cape Flats homes deal with

Housing ranges from older council semis and flat blocks to RDP homes, backyard rooms and informal structures. Where walls and roofs are shared, rodents and cockroaches move between households quickly, and informal structures with gaps at the base are hard to seal. Waste collection and stormwater that cannot cope after heavy rain make the job harder, which is why community-wide approaches work best.

The Flats were once dunes and wetlands, and in winter the water table rises, flooding yards and low streets. The Philippi Horticultural Area, the vleis like Zeekoevlei and Rondevlei, and the canals that feed them breed mosquitoes and shelter rodents. In summer the South-Easter blows sand and litter across the open land.

The pests we get called out for most in Cape Flats

Rats and mice are the biggest worry, followed by German cockroaches, flies and fleas. Mosquitoes are worst near vleis and canals. Bed bugs spread in crowded homes and through second-hand furniture.

Rats and mice

Brown rats dig straight into the soft sand along boundary walls and under shacks and Wendy houses, and they use the canals and open fields as highways between neighbourhoods. When a dumping site is cleared, they scatter into nearby homes, so baiting should start before the clean-up.

Cockroaches, ants and other crawlers

German cockroaches breed behind fridges and in the shelving of spaza shops, then spread along shared walls. In the sandy yards you also get crickets, harvester ants and now and then a thick-tailed scorpion under bricks or zinc sheeting.

Flies, mosquitoes and wasps

Houseflies follow refuse that waits too long for collection, especially in the heat after a long weekend. Mosquito pressure is heaviest from spring into summer in homes close to the vleis, the canals and the farm dams of Philippi.

Fleas and bed bugs

Fleas are very common where dogs and cats share small yards with children, and they are worst in the warm months. Bed bugs move through second-hand beds and couches, and they need every room and every mattress treated together.

Wood borer and timber

Borer is not usually the first worry here, but the pine trusses in older council houses can be affected where roofs have leaked for years. A beetle certificate is often requested when a house is sold.

Pantry pests

Families who buy maize meal, samp and rice in big bags often find weevils by the bottom of the bag. Spaza shops and small bakeries benefit from routine checks on flour and grain stock.

Hygiene and disinfection

Crèches, clinics, schools and churches are where disinfection makes the biggest difference, particularly during winter flu and stomach bug outbreaks.

Birds

Pigeons roost on school roofs and shopping centres, and gulls fly in to dumping sites from the coast. The most effective bird control here is getting waste picked up and keeping it covered.

Local tip for Cape FlatsKeep the ground around your house clear of rubble and dumped items, because rats on the Cape Flats live in these piles. A clean strip of sand along the walls also shows you where they are digging.

How a visit works

We start with an inspection, because the right answer for ants is different from the right answer for rats, and guessing wastes money. Where we can, we go least-toxic first: gel baits for cockroaches and ants, tamper-resistant bait stations and snap traps for rodents, and insect growth regulators that break the breeding cycle. Residual sprays and dusts are applied only where they are needed, such as wall voids, cracks and roof spaces, not sprayed across every surface. Proofing is part of the job, so we point out or seal the gaps that let pests in. You get a post-treatment report so you know what was used and where.

Questions from Cape Flats

Why are mosquitoes so bad near the vleis on the Cape Flats?

Because Zeekoevlei, Rondevlei and the canals that feed them hold still, shallow water where mosquitoes breed easily. Fitting mesh to bedroom windows and tipping out any standing water in the yard each week makes the biggest difference at home.

Does winter flooding push rats into homes on the Cape Flats?

Yes. When the water table rises and drains back up, rats are flushed out of their burrows and look for dry shelter in houses and outbuildings, so baiting and sealing gaps in April or May, before the heavy rain, pays off.

Is your pest control safe for children and pets?

We use the least-toxic effective option first and place baits in tamper-resistant stations or in cracks where children and pets cannot reach. We will tell you if anyone needs to stay out of a room and for how long.

How soon can you come out?

Our average turnaround is about 48 hours, though it varies with the season. After-hours and weekend visits can be arranged on request.

The risk: Proteins in their droppings, saliva and shed skins are a well-known trigger for asthma and allergies, particularly in children.

How we treat it: For American cockroaches, we treat floor drains, manholes and entry points with a residual product, and use dusts in wall voids and ceiling spaces.

  • Rat Control in Cape Flats: we treat rats

    Rat Control in Cape Flats

The risk: Rats spread leptospirosis through their urine, and they can carry salmonella and other diseases onto food surfaces.

How we treat it: Burrows are treated and collapsed after the colony is dealt with.

  • Fly Control in Cape Flats: we treat flies

    Fly Control in Cape Flats

The risk: Flies feed and lay eggs on rubbish and faeces, then walk on food and prep surfaces, carrying bacteria that cause stomach illness.

How we treat it: Fly control works from the ground up, so we start with sanitation: bins, compost, drains, grease traps, animal waste and anything else they can breed in.

  • Squirrel Control in Cape Flats: we treat grey squirrels

    Squirrel Control in Cape Flats

The risk: Squirrels in the roof chew cables, which is a fire risk, and they damage insulation and ceiling boards.

How we treat it: Where it makes sense, live cage traps are used to remove squirrels from the roof.

  • Stored Product Pest Control in Cape Flats: we treat stored product insects

Stored Product Pest Control in Cape Flats

The risk: Infested food is contaminated with insect bodies, cast skins, droppings and webbing, and it has to be thrown out, which adds up quickly for a bakery, mill or food distributor.

How we treat it: In warehouses, mills and food factories, larger infestations of bulk commodities may need fumigation, which we plan and carry out separately under the right controls.

  • Wood Borer Treatment in Cape Flats: we treat wood borer beetles

Wood Borer Treatment in Cape Flats

The risk: Most borer damage is slow, but it is cumulative, and a roof truss weakened by years of tunnelling can fail under load.

How we treat it: Exposed timber such as roof trusses, beams and floor joists is treated with a residual borer spray that penetrates the surface and kills emerging beetles and young larvae.

  • Scorpion Control in Cape Flats: we treat scorpions

    Scorpion Control in Cape Flats

The risk: Most scorpion stings in the Western Cape cause local pain and swelling similar to a bee sting.

How we treat it: Scorpions are harder to kill with contact sprays than most insects, so we focus on a combination of habitat reduction and targeted treatment.

  • Bed Bug Control in Cape Flats: we treat bed bugs

Bed Bug Control in Cape Flats

The risk: Bed bugs are not known to spread disease, but their bites cause itching, rashes and sometimes strong allergic reactions.

How we treat it: Prevention advice for travel, guests and furniture purchases is part of the job, because reintroduction is the main reason people get them again.

  • Mosquito Control in Cape Flats: we treat mosquitoes

    Mosquito Control in Cape Flats

The risk: In the Western Cape, mosquitoes are mainly a nuisance and are not a malaria risk, but the bites can cause swelling and itching that is worse in children and some adults.

How we treat it: Adult mosquitoes rest in cool, shaded places during the day, so we apply a residual spray to the undersides of shrubs, hedges, eaves, patio ceilings and other resting areas.
