The Cape Flats is the wide, flat sandy plain that stretches from the mountain towards False Bay, home to a huge share of Cape Town's people. Pest problems differ from suburb to suburb, but the common thread is sandy ground, a high water table in winter and a lot of homes built close together.
Fumigation by suburb
We cover all 24 suburbs on our Cape Flats route. Each suburb page covers what we find there and what works for those streets and buildings.

General pest control around Cape Flats
Houseflies follow refuse that waits too long for collection, especially in the heat after a long weekend. Mosquito pressure is heaviest from spring into summer in homes close to the vleis, the canals and the farm dams of Philippi.
The Flats were once dunes and wetlands, and in winter the water table rises, flooding yards and low streets. The Philippi Horticultural Area, the vleis like Zeekoevlei and Rondevlei, and the canals that feed them breed mosquitoes and shelter rodents. In summer the South-Easter blows sand and litter across the open land.
Signs to look for
- Pests are in a place you cannot reach with a spray, such as inside packed stock or solid timber.
- An heirloom or second-hand piece of furniture has live beetles or fresh frass coming out of it.
- Earlier surface treatments knocked the problem back but it returned within weeks.
- Fine powdery dust and small round holes are appearing on wooden furniture or beams, even after you have cleaned them.
- A container or pallet load needs a treatment before it can be moved or accepted.
Fumigant gases are dangerous to people and animals, which is why fumigation is done under sheets or in sealed rooms with warning signs and nobody inside. Done badly, it either leaves pests alive deep in the material or leaves gas where it should not be. Done well, it reaches every crack in a load of timber or a pallet of stock. For a business, an untreated infestation in stored goods can mean whole batches thrown away and unhappy customers.
Worth knowing
A shop-bought bug bomb is not fumigation. It puts insecticide on exposed surfaces and often pushes cockroaches further into the walls.
What happens when we come out
We start by confirming that fumigation is really needed, because a lot of jobs can be solved with a residual spray, a dust or an insect growth regulator instead. When gas is the right tool, the item or area is sealed under gas-proof sheeting or in an airtight room, the fumigant is introduced and the space is held closed for the required exposure time. Afterwards it is aired out and checked before anyone goes back in. For houses with crawling insects we use targeted gel baits, dusts and residual sprays, often with a ULV fogging pass for hard-to-reach voids. You get a written report after every treatment.

Stopping a repeat visit
- Have bulk storage areas checked regularly so a small problem does not become a fumigation job.
- Do not stack cardboard and pallets against walls for months; it gives pests a hiding place.
- Store grain, feed and dry goods in sealed containers and use the old stock first.
- Inspect second-hand furniture for small exit holes and fine dust before bringing it into the house.
- If you are buying an older property, include a beetle inspection in the transfer process.
How much will it cost?
The price depends on whether you need gas fumigation or a standard treatment, and on the volume being treated. Sealing a whole structure or a full container takes more material and time than a single piece of furniture. Access, preparation work and any follow-up treatments are factored into the free quote.
Wood borer beetles emerge mainly in the warmer months from late spring into summer, so that is when people notice fresh holes and ask about fumigation. Stored product pests breed faster in the heat too, while cockroach and flea calls climb from October as the weather warms up.
Frequently asked questions
Will fumigation leave a smell?
Once a space has been properly aired, there should be little or no lingering smell. We use odourless products where we can.
Is fumigation the same as spraying?
No. Fumigation uses a gas in a sealed space, while spraying applies a product to surfaces. Many people in Cape Town use the words interchangeably, which is why we check what you need first.
Do I have to move out for fumigation?
For true gas fumigation of a structure, yes, everyone including pets must leave until it is cleared. For a standard house treatment you usually only need to be out for a few hours.
Does winter flooding push rats into homes on the Cape Flats?
Yes. When the water table rises and drains back up, rats are flushed out of their burrows and look for dry shelter in houses and outbuildings, so baiting and sealing gaps in April or May, before the heavy rain, pays off.
Why are mosquitoes so bad near the vleis on the Cape Flats?
Because Zeekoevlei, Rondevlei and the canals that feed them hold still, shallow water where mosquitoes breed easily. Fitting mesh to bedroom windows and tipping out any standing water in the yard each week makes the biggest difference at home.
Do you come out to Cape Flats for fumigation?
Yes. Cape Flats is part of our regular Cape Flats route, along with Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Athlone. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
