Pest Control by suburb

We cover all 26 suburbs on our City Bowl & Atlantic Seaboard route. Each suburb page covers what we find there and what works for those streets and buildings.

What Atlantic Seaboard homes deal with

Much of the coast is high-rise and mid-rise flats along Beach Road and Victoria Road, mixed with older semi-detached houses inland and big modern homes cut into the slopes higher up. Apartment blocks share refuse rooms, service ducts and basements, which is where rats and cockroaches settle. Holiday lets change guests every few days, and that turnover brings bed bugs in with the luggage.

The cold Atlantic keeps summers mild, but the air is salty and damp, so roof timbers and cupboards hold moisture. Lion's Head, Signal Hill and the Twelve Apostles rise right behind the houses, and the fynbos and rocky slopes are where rodents and some spiders come from. When the South-Easter drops in late summer, flies and mosquitoes become noticeable along the promenade.

The pests we get called out for most in Atlantic Seaboard

Rats in refuse rooms and basements are the biggest call-out, followed by German cockroaches in restaurant kitchens and flats. Bed bugs are a recurring problem in short-term rentals and backpackers. Pigeons and gulls on balconies and roofs keep many body corporates busy.

Rats and mice

Roof rats (black rats) climb and nest in roof spaces and parking basements, while brown rats live around the refuse rooms and storm drains near the promenade. Rodents also come down off the mountain slopes in winter.

Cockroaches, ants and other crawlers

German cockroaches spread through apartment kitchens and restaurant strips on Main Road and Regent Road. Fishmoths and silverfish like the damp, sea-air cupboards, and ants trail in from the gardens on the upper slopes.

Flies, mosquitoes and wasps

Houseflies follow restaurant bins, and clothes moths do well in seasonal homes that stand closed for months. Wasps nest in balcony railings and gutters higher up the slopes.

Fleas and bed bugs

Bed bugs travel in suitcases into holiday flats and guesthouses, so quick inspections between bookings are worth it. Pigeon nests on balconies can also bring bird mites indoors.

Wood borer and timber

Timber pests matter more in the older semis and the wooden-decked houses on the slopes, where sea air keeps timber damp. Many sales here still need a beetle certificate, so get an inspection booked early in the process.

Pantry pests

Restaurants, delis and corner cafés need routine stored product checks for flour beetles and moths. In holiday homes, opened packets left in the pantry between visits are a common source of pantry moths.

Hygiene and disinfection

Short-term rental hosts and body corporates often ask for disinfection between guests or after illness in a building. Gyms, spas and restaurants along the strip are regular candidates for fogging and surface sanitising.

Birds

Feral pigeons are the main nuisance on balconies and air-conditioning units, and Hartlaub's and kelp gulls work the rooftops near the sea. Netting, spikes and wire systems on ledges usually solve it without harming the birds.

Local tip for Atlantic SeaboardIf your block has a shared refuse room, push the body corporate to keep the door closed and the bins lidded and washed. One open bin room can feed rats for the whole building.

How a visit works

We start with an inspection, because the right answer for ants is different from the right answer for rats, and guessing wastes money. Where we can, we go least-toxic first: gel baits for cockroaches and ants, tamper-resistant bait stations and snap traps for rodents, and insect growth regulators that break the breeding cycle. Residual sprays and dusts are applied only where they are needed, such as wall voids, cracks and roof spaces, not sprayed across every surface. Proofing is part of the job, so we point out or seal the gaps that let pests in. You get a post-treatment report so you know what was used and where.

Questions from Atlantic Seaboard

Why does my Sea Point or Green Point flat get rats when I keep it clean?

Rats in apartment blocks usually live in the refuse room, basement or service ducts and move up through the building. We work with the building as a whole, baiting the common areas and sealing the routes into individual flats.

Do Atlantic Seaboard holiday rentals really get bed bugs?

Yes, because guests change often and bed bugs hitch a ride in luggage. A quick inspection between bookings, plus treating at the first sign, stops a small problem turning into cancelled stays.

Is your pest control safe for children and pets?

We use the least-toxic effective option first and place baits in tamper-resistant stations or in cracks where children and pets cannot reach. We will tell you if anyone needs to stay out of a room and for how long.

How soon can you come out?

Our average turnaround is about 48 hours, though it varies with the season. After-hours and weekend visits can be arranged on request.
