Insect Control in Atlantic Seaboard

Spraying the insects you can see in Atlantic Seaboard is the quickest way to make sure you see more of them next month. Insect control is about working out which insect you actually have, where it is coming from, and stopping it there rather than spraying everything in sight. In Cape Town we deal with ants, cockroaches, fishmoths, fleas, flies, wasps and stored product pests every week, and each one needs a different approach. We follow a 4-step insect regime: find the source, map the infestation, treat it in a targeted way, and leave you with remedial recommendations so it does not come straight back.

The Atlantic Seaboard runs from Mouille Point and Green Point down past Sea Point, Bantry Bay and Clifton to Camps Bay, squeezed between the mountain and the cold ocean. Pest work here is mostly in apartment blocks, restaurants and holiday rentals, where one problem flat can spread to the whole building.

Insect Control by suburb

We cover all 26 suburbs on our City Bowl & Atlantic Seaboard route. Each suburb page covers what we find there and what works for those streets and buildings.

Atlantic Seaboard: what drives general pest control here

Roof rats (black rats) climb and nest in roof spaces and parking basements, while brown rats live around the refuse rooms and storm drains near the promenade. Rodents also come down off the mountain slopes in winter.

The cold Atlantic keeps summers mild, but the air is salty and damp, so roof timbers and cupboards hold moisture. Lion's Head, Signal Hill and the Twelve Apostles rise right behind the houses, and the fynbos and rocky slopes are where rodents and some spiders come from. When the South-Easter drops in late summer, flies and mosquitoes become noticeable along the promenade.

Something most people miss

Not every insect indoors needs a treatment. A lone beetle that flew in through an open window is not an infestation, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a service you do not need.

How to tell you have a problem

  1. Pantry goods have webbing, clumped grain or small beetles or moths flying out when you open them.
  2. You keep finding the same type of insect in one room, which usually points to a nearby source rather than a random visitor.
  3. Insects appear right after a cold front or heavy rain, which tells us they are coming in from the garden for shelter.
  4. Small dark droppings that look like ground pepper collect in cupboard corners or behind the fridge.
  5. Trails of ants run along skirting boards, plug points or window frames towards food or moisture.

How the treatment works

We start with the least-toxic option that will actually work, which often means gel baits and bait stations for ants and cockroaches rather than blanket spraying. Insect growth regulators are useful where we need to break a breeding cycle, for example with fleas or a stubborn cockroach population. Residual sprays go into specific cracks, voids and entry points, not across open floors where children and pets walk. Dusts are used in wall voids, roof spaces and electrical areas where liquids are not safe. We use eco-friendly and odourless products wherever we can, and every job ends with a post-treatment report.

Prevention that actually works

  • Keep dry goods in sealed glass or hard plastic containers rather than the paper or plastic bags they came in.
  • Clear gutters and drains before winter so water does not pool against walls and attract breeding insects.
  • Empty pet bowls at night and wipe up crumbs around the dog or cat feeding area.
  • Fix dripping taps and leaking geysers quickly, as most indoor insects need a reliable water source.
Local tip for Atlantic SeaboardIf your block has a shared refuse room, push the body corporate to keep the door closed and the bins lidded and washed. One open bin room can feed rats for the whole building.

How much will it cost?

The price depends mainly on which insect you have and how established it is, since a few ants in one kitchen is a very different job from cockroaches in every unit of a block. Property size, how easy it is to reach roof spaces and voids, and whether follow-up visits are needed to break a breeding cycle all play a part. Businesses that want regular scheduled visits on a contract usually get better value than paying for repeated once-off call-outs, and the quote is always free.

For a handful of ants on the kitchen counter, a supermarket bait is honestly fine. Where DIY goes wrong is with cockroaches, fleas and anything that keeps coming back, because aerosol sprays kill what you can see and scatter the rest deeper into the walls. If you have tried twice and they are still there, it is time to have someone find the source.

Insect Control questions from Atlantic Seaboard

Why does my Sea Point or Green Point flat get rats when I keep it clean?

Rats in apartment blocks usually live in the refuse room, basement or service ducts and move up through the building. We work with the building as a whole, baiting the common areas and sealing the routes into individual flats.

Do Atlantic Seaboard holiday rentals really get bed bugs?

Yes, because guests change often and bed bugs hitch a ride in luggage. A quick inspection between bookings, plus treating at the first sign, stops a small problem turning into cancelled stays.

Do you treat businesses as well as homes?

Yes. Restaurants, offices, warehouses and rental blocks all get the same source-first approach, and we can set up scheduled visits for premises that need ongoing control.

Why do I still see insects after the treatment?

Seeing some activity for a week or two is normal, especially with baits, because the insects need to feed on the product and carry it back to the nest. If numbers are not dropping clearly after that, let us know.

Do you come out to Atlantic Seaboard for insect control?

Yes. Atlantic Seaboard is part of our regular City Bowl & Atlantic Seaboard route, along with Sea Point, Green Point, Bantry Bay, Clifton. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

Do I need to leave the house during an insect treatment?

Usually not for very long. Gel baits and bait stations need no vacating at all, and for residual sprays we will tell you how long to keep children and pets out of the treated area, which is typically until it has dried.
