Pest control in Sun Valley, as we see it
The area is mostly freestanding homes from the eighties and nineties, plus newer townhouse complexes and a few security estates. Plenty of houses have big gardens, pool pumps, wooden decks and garden sheds, all of which give rodents and spiders somewhere to hide. Some homes have timber ceilings and exposed beams that need watching for borer.
The Silvermine side of the Table Mountain National Park is right above the suburb, and the low ground towards Noordhoek and the Fish Hoek valley holds water in winter. That mix of mountain fynbos and wet valley floor brings rodents and plenty of crawling insects right to the back fence. The valley also gets cooler, damp nights that suit fishmoths and mould.
The pests we get called out for most in Sun Valley
Rats and field mice moving in from the green belts are a steady issue, especially once the winter rains start. Ants, crickets, spiders and the odd scorpion are common in garden-heavy properties. Mosquitoes are worse near the wetland edge, and timber pests matter in homes with wooden decks and ceilings.
Rats and mice
Striped field mice and rats come down from the fynbos and wetland edges in autumn looking for shelter. Garden sheds, wood piles and compost heaps are the first places they settle.
Cockroaches, ants and other crawlers
Crickets, garden spiders and rain spiders are frequent visitors, and scorpions turn up under rocks and stacked wood. Argentine ants trail indoors as soon as the weather turns.
Flies, mosquitoes and wasps
Mosquitoes breed in the wetland pockets and blocked gutters, and paper wasps like to build under eaves and pergolas. Moths come to outdoor lights in big numbers on warm nights.
Fleas and bed bugs
Fleas come in on pets that roam the green belt. Mosquito bites are the main biting complaint in summer for homes near the vlei.
Wood borer and timber
Wooden decks, pergolas and timber ceilings are worth checking for wood borer every few years. A beetle certificate is usually needed when selling, and it is cheaper to find problems early.
Pantry pests
Pantry moths and weevils appear in homes that store bird seed, pet food or bulk grains in garages. Keeping these in sealed containers helps a lot.
Hygiene and disinfection
Schools and crèches in the valley sometimes ask for sanitising during flu season. Rental homes between tenants are another common disinfection job.
Birds
Egyptian geese wander onto lawns and pools from the wetland, and pigeons settle in roof spaces. Closing roof gaps and covering pool areas helps keep them off.
How a visit works
We start with an inspection, because the right answer for ants is different from the right answer for rats, and guessing wastes money. Where we can, we go least-toxic first: gel baits for cockroaches and ants, tamper-resistant bait stations and snap traps for rodents, and insect growth regulators that break the breeding cycle. Residual sprays and dusts are applied only where they are needed, such as wall voids, cracks and roof spaces, not sprayed across every surface. Proofing is part of the job, so we point out or seal the gaps that let pests in. You get a post-treatment report so you know what was used and where.

Everything we treat in Sun Valley
Questions from Sun Valley
Do the rats in Sun Valley come from the mountain or from neighbours?
Mostly from the green belts and wetland edges, especially after the first winter rains. Sealing roof and garage gaps on the bush-facing side of your home makes the biggest difference.
Are scorpions in Sun Valley dangerous?
Most scorpions found here are mild, but some thick-tailed species can give a painful sting, so treat any sting with caution and get medical advice if symptoms are severe. We can reduce numbers around your home by clearing harbourage and treating hiding spots.
Is your pest control safe for children and pets?
We use the least-toxic effective option first and place baits in tamper-resistant stations or in cracks where children and pets cannot reach. We will tell you if anyone needs to stay out of a room and for how long.
How soon can you come out?
Our average turnaround is about 48 hours, though it varies with the season. After-hours and weekend visits can be arranged on request.
