What Strand homes deal with
Along the beachfront you get blocks of holiday and retirement flats, many with shared refuse rooms and long service ducts that let cockroaches travel between units. Further back from the sea the streets are older freestanding homes and townhouse complexes, plus a busy commercial strip with takeaways and small supermarkets. Lock-up-and-go flats are the tricky ones, because nobody notices droppings or a fishmoth problem until the owner arrives for the season.
The South-Easter blows hard across False Bay here in summer, pushing sand and debris into every gap under doors and garage roller shutters. Winter rain is lighter than on the Peninsula but the Lourens River mouth and the low-lying ground near it stay damp. Salt air also rusts mesh and vent covers faster than people expect, which opens new entry points.
The pests we get called out for most in Strand
German cockroaches in the flat blocks and around food outlets top the list, with rats and mice close behind wherever bins are left open. Gulls and pigeons are a constant nuisance on the beachfront buildings. In the older houses inland, ants and fishmoths keep us busy, and the odd wood borer job turns up when a property goes on the market.
Rats and mice
Roof rats move along the backs of the shops and restaurants near the beachfront, then find their way into neighbouring flats through ceiling voids. Mice are more common in the inland houses, especially near open veld.
Cockroaches, ants and other crawlers
German cockroaches breed in the kitchens and refuse rooms of the beachfront blocks, while the bigger American roaches come up from drains in summer. Black ants trail in from sandy gardens, and fishmoths love the closed-up cupboards of empty holiday flats.
Flies, mosquitoes and wasps
House flies build up fast around takeaways and bins during the December rush. Mosquitoes are worst near the Lourens River and any standing water after rain.
Fleas and bed bugs
Fleas are a common call when a flat changes hands or a pet-owning tenant moves out. Bed bugs occasionally arrive with holiday visitors' luggage, so a quick check after a busy season is sensible.
Wood borer and timber
Older inland homes with timber roof trusses can carry wood borer, and the beetle certificate needed on a property sale is often when it gets found. Coastal flats rarely have a timber problem beyond the odd built-in cupboard.
Pantry pests
Pantry moths and weevils show up in flats where flour, rice and pet food sit untouched for months between visits. Small grocers and bakeries in the main road need regular stored product checks.
Hygiene and disinfection
Body corporates often ask for refuse room disinfection before the holiday season, and restaurants along the beachfront use sanitising and fogging between deep cleans. Rentals between tenants are another regular job.
Birds
Gulls nest and roost on the flat roofs of the beachfront blocks, and pigeons foul balconies and air-conditioning units. Netting and spikes on ledges make a real difference here.
How a visit works
We start with an inspection, because the right answer for ants is different from the right answer for rats, and guessing wastes money. Where we can, we go least-toxic first: gel baits for cockroaches and ants, tamper-resistant bait stations and snap traps for rodents, and insect growth regulators that break the breeding cycle. Residual sprays and dusts are applied only where they are needed, such as wall voids, cracks and roof spaces, not sprayed across every surface. Proofing is part of the job, so we point out or seal the gaps that let pests in. You get a post-treatment report so you know what was used and where.

Questions from Strand
Why do I find cockroaches in my Strand holiday flat every time I come back?
Usually they are coming from neighbouring units or the shared refuse room, not starting in your flat. Treating your unit helps, but the best results come when the body corporate treats the ducts and bin areas at the same time.
Can you stop gulls from nesting on our block's roof near the beach?
Yes. Bird netting, spikes and wire systems on the roof edges and plant areas make the building far less attractive, and it is best installed before the nesting season starts.
Is your pest control safe for children and pets?
We use the least-toxic effective option first and place baits in tamper-resistant stations or in cracks where children and pets cannot reach. We will tell you if anyone needs to stay out of a room and for how long.
How soon can you come out?
Our average turnaround is about 48 hours, though it varies with the season. After-hours and weekend visits can be arranged on request.
