Strand is a beach town first, so a lot of our work follows the holiday calendar. Flats on Beach Road sit empty for months, then fill up over December, and pests that moved in quietly during the off-season suddenly become everyone's problem.
The local picture in Strand
Fleas are a common call when a flat changes hands or a pet-owning tenant moves out. Bed bugs occasionally arrive with holiday visitors' luggage, so a quick check after a busy season is sensible.
The South-Easter blows hard across False Bay here in summer, pushing sand and debris into every gap under doors and garage roller shutters. Winter rain is lighter than on the Peninsula but the Lourens River mouth and the low-lying ground near it stay damp. Salt air also rusts mesh and vent covers faster than people expect, which opens new entry points.
Along the beachfront you get blocks of holiday and retirement flats, many with shared refuse rooms and long service ducts that let cockroaches travel between units. Further back from the sea the streets are older freestanding homes and townhouse complexes, plus a busy commercial strip with takeaways and small supermarkets. Lock-up-and-go flats are the tricky ones, because nobody notices droppings or a fishmoth problem until the owner arrives for the season.
German cockroaches in the flat blocks and around food outlets top the list, with rats and mice close behind wherever bins are left open. Gulls and pigeons are a constant nuisance on the beachfront buildings. In the older houses inland, ants and fishmoths keep us busy, and the odd wood borer job turns up when a property goes on the market.
Tell-tale signs
- Small blood spots or dark staining on sheets and mattress seams.
- Mosquito whine at night and bites on any skin left outside the covers.
- Rows of itchy bites on the arms, neck or shoulders after a night in bed, which is typical of bed bugs.
- A crawling, prickling feeling at night with tiny moving specks near a window or ceiling below a bird nest.
- Bites that appear soon after moving house, travelling or bringing home second-hand furniture.
Worth knowing
Bird mites cannot survive long on people, but they will bite when their nest is abandoned. Removing the old nest is as important as treating the room.
What happens when we come out
We always identify the biter before choosing a treatment, using sticky traps, a close look at bedding, pet areas and roof voids, and photos you send us. Flea jobs combine an insect growth regulator with a residual spray on floors, pet bedding areas and under furniture, alongside vet treatment of the animals. Bed bugs need a careful, room-by-room crack and crevice treatment of beds, headboards and furniture, often with a follow-up visit. Mosquitoes are tackled at the breeding source first, with targeted treatment of resting areas, and bird mites mean dealing with the old nest as well as the mites in the room. We use the least-toxic effective product for each situation.

Keeping them out afterwards
- Vacuum floors, rugs and pet sleeping areas often and throw the vacuum bag or contents away outside.
- Have bird nests removed from roofs and gutters and the gaps closed before the chicks fledge.
- Check hotel and guest house beds before unpacking, and keep your suitcase on the luggage rack rather than the floor.
- Empty pot-plant saucers, buckets and blocked gutters weekly so mosquitoes have nowhere to breed.
- Inspect second-hand beds, couches and headboards closely along the seams before they come into the house.
What affects the price
Price depends on which insect we are dealing with, how many rooms are affected and how far the problem has spread. Bed bug and flea jobs often need a follow-up visit to break the breeding cycle, which is built into the quote. We start with a free quote, and a WhatsApp photo of the bites or the insect often helps narrow things down.
Fleas and mosquitoes build up sharply from October and peak through the hot summer months, especially after a wet winter leaves standing water around. Bird mite problems tend to follow the spring nesting season when chicks leave the nest. Bed bugs are less seasonal and follow travel patterns, so we see more after the December holidays.
Questions we get asked in Strand
Do I need to leave the house during treatment?
For most biting insect treatments you will need to be out of the treated rooms for a few hours until surfaces are dry. We give specific instructions when we book.
Do you come out to Strand for biting insect control?
Yes. Strand is part of our regular Helderberg route, along with Somerset West, Gordon's Bay, Macassar, Helderberg. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
Can you stop gulls from nesting on our block's roof near the beach?
Yes. Bird netting, spikes and wire systems on the roof edges and plant areas make the building far less attractive, and it is best installed before the nesting season starts.
Why do I find cockroaches in my Strand holiday flat every time I come back?
Usually they are coming from neighbouring units or the shared refuse room, not starting in your flat. Treating your unit helps, but the best results come when the body corporate treats the ducts and bin areas at the same time.
Are you available after hours?
Yes, after-hours and weekend visits can be arranged on request, and our 24-hour line takes calls for advice and bookings.
Do you treat pets?
No, animals should be treated by your vet with a product suited to them. We treat the house, and the two need to happen at the same time to work.
