Stored Product Pest Control for Parklands homes and businesses

A bakery owner in Parklands spots a few beetles near the flour bins and wonders if it is serious. Stored product pests are the beetles, weevils and moths that live in flour, grain, cereal, pet food, spices and dried fruit, in home pantries as well as in bakeries, mills and warehouses. In Cape Town we find the infested stock, get it out, treat the cracks and shelving where the insects hide, and set up pheromone monitoring so a new outbreak is spotted early.

Parklands grew fast from bare dune land into rows of townhouse complexes and family homes, so many pest issues here come from the sand and open veld that still surround parts of it. Ants, mice and windblown flies are typical.

Stored product pests in Parklands: what we see

Pantry moths and weevils appear in kitchens with bulk grains. Restaurants and grocers in shopping centres need regular checks.

Most homes are newer brick houses and townhouses in complexes with shared walls and gardens. Light roofs and modern building methods keep things tidy, but gaps around pipes, vents and garage doors let mice and insects in. Complexes share refuse areas, which can attract rodents. Some estates have ponds and open spaces with water features.

Parklands is built on sandy, windy coastal ground near Big Bay and Table View, with open dune and veld land still at the edges. The South-Easter blows hard in summer, and winter brings cold fronts and rain. Ponds and wetlands in estates and parks hold water year-round.

Ants and mice are the most common calls, with fleas in summer. Mosquitoes breed around ponds and water features. Egyptian geese and pigeons cause mess in estates.

A note from the field

For food businesses, a pest found by a customer does far more damage than a pest found on a pheromone trap. Monitoring is about catching problems before anyone else does.

How to tell you have a problem

  1. Small moths flutter out when you open a cupboard, and rest on the ceiling at night.
  2. Grains of rice or maize have tiny round exit holes, or the bag has fine dust at the bottom.
  3. Silky webbing clumps cereal, nuts or pet food together, sometimes with small caterpillars inside.
  4. Insects collect in the folds of packaging or along the seams of sealed boxes and bags.
  5. Small brown or reddish beetles walk along pantry shelves or across the kitchen counter.
  6. Flour has a greyish tint, a musty smell or moves slightly when you look closely.

Infested food is contaminated with insect bodies, cast skins, droppings and webbing, and it has to be thrown out, which adds up quickly for a bakery, mill or food distributor. A single infested bag can spread to the rest of a pantry or storeroom, so losses grow fast if nobody checks. For manufacturers and exporters, an infestation can mean rejected consignments, failed audits and customer complaints. Some stored product beetles also cause damp, mouldy pockets in bulk grain, which encourages further spoilage.

Our process, step by step

The first and most important step is finding and removing every infested product, because no treatment works while the insects still have food. Shelves, cracks and crevices, and the gaps behind and under cupboards and racking are vacuumed out to remove spilt product and eggs. We then apply a targeted residual treatment into cracks and crevices, and an insect growth regulator where the pest is a moth or beetle that keeps cycling through. Pheromone traps for moths and beetles go in to monitor for survivors and new arrivals. In warehouses, mills and food factories, larger infestations of bulk commodities may need fumigation, which we plan and carry out separately under the right controls.

Keeping them out afterwards

  • Put new bags of flour or grain in the freezer for a few days if you have had weevils before, which kills eggs inside.
  • In commercial stores, rotate stock on a first-in, first-out basis and keep pallets off walls so you can inspect behind them.
  • Buy dry goods in amounts you will use within a month or two, rather than letting big bags sit at the back of the cupboard.
  • Wipe and vacuum pantry shelves when you restock, paying attention to corners and the gaps behind shelf supports.
  • Move flour, rice, cereal, pasta and pet food into sealed glass or hard plastic containers as soon as you get them home.
Local tip for ParklandsKeep sand from building up against your walls and doors, because ants and mice use it as a ramp into your home. Sweep paving and keep garage doors closed when not in use.

What affects the price

For homes, the cost depends mostly on how big the pantry is and how far the insects have spread into other cupboards. For commercial sites, the size of the storage area, the type of commodity, the level of infestation and whether fumigation is needed all affect the price. Food businesses that need regular monitoring and audit paperwork are usually best on a service contract, and we quote free after an inspection.

Stored product insects breed faster in warm weather, so infestations that started quietly in winter often become obvious from November through to March. In Cape Town's dry summers, warm pantries next to ovens and geysers are particular hot spots. In heated warehouses and bakeries the problem can carry on all year.

Questions we get asked in Parklands

Where did these insects come from?

Usually in a packet of food bought already infested, often in small numbers you could not see. They then spread to other products in the cupboard.

Can you deal with Egyptian geese in a Parklands estate?

We can advise on deterrents and bird proofing for buildings and shared areas, focusing on keeping them away from homes rather than harming them.

Do you come out to Parklands for stored product pest control?

Yes. Parklands is part of our regular Blaauwberg & West Coast route, along with Table View, Bloubergstrand, Melkbosstrand, Milnerton. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

Do you work in warehouses and food factories?

Yes. We do inspections, crack and crevice treatment, pheromone monitoring and scheduled visits, with reports you can use for food safety audits.

Why are there so many ants in Parklands homes?

The sandy ground makes nesting easy, and summer heat sends them indoors for water. Baiting their trails and treating entry points brings them under control.

Do I have to throw everything away?

Throw away anything infested and anything open that is close to it. Unopened tins and sealed jars are generally fine once wiped down.
