Parow is an older working suburb built around Voortrekker Road, with shops, flats, family homes and an industrial area all close together. Rats, cockroaches and stored product pests are steady work here.
Stored product pests in Parow: what we see
Food factories and shops need regular checks for weevils and moths. At home, sealed containers prevent pantry pests.
Housing includes older freestanding homes, semi-detached houses and blocks of flats, many dating from the mid-twentieth century. Older roofs and floors have gaps that rodents use, and flats share pipes and refuse areas that spread cockroaches. Parow Industria and the commercial strip add warehouses, workshops and food businesses. Backyard rooms and garages are common.
Rats and mice are the top problem, followed by German cockroaches in flats and kitchens. Stored product pests matter in industrial and retail areas. Fleas and ants are common in homes during summer.
What gives them away
- Pheromone traps or glue boards in a warehouse catch more beetles or moths each week.
- Grains of rice or maize have tiny round exit holes, or the bag has fine dust at the bottom.
- Insects collect in the folds of packaging or along the seams of sealed boxes and bags.
- Flour has a greyish tint, a musty smell or moves slightly when you look closely.
Infested food is contaminated with insect bodies, cast skins, droppings and webbing, and it has to be thrown out, which adds up quickly for a bakery, mill or food distributor. A single infested bag can spread to the rest of a pantry or storeroom, so losses grow fast if nobody checks. For manufacturers and exporters, an infestation can mean rejected consignments, failed audits and customer complaints. Some stored product beetles also cause damp, mouldy pockets in bulk grain, which encourages further spoilage.
From the technician
In homes with small children and pets, we lean on clean-out, sealed storage and pheromone traps rather than chemical treatment near food.
How we handle stored product pest control in Parow
The first and most important step is finding and removing every infested product, because no treatment works while the insects still have food. Shelves, cracks and crevices, and the gaps behind and under cupboards and racking are vacuumed out to remove spilt product and eggs. We then apply a targeted residual treatment into cracks and crevices, and an insect growth regulator where the pest is a moth or beetle that keeps cycling through. Pheromone traps for moths and beetles go in to monitor for survivors and new arrivals. In warehouses, mills and food factories, larger infestations of bulk commodities may need fumigation, which we plan and carry out separately under the right controls.

Keeping them out afterwards
- Buy dry goods in amounts you will use within a month or two, rather than letting big bags sit at the back of the cupboard.
- Store birdseed and pet food away from the kitchen, as these are common sources of pantry moths.
- Wipe and vacuum pantry shelves when you restock, paying attention to corners and the gaps behind shelf supports.
- Move flour, rice, cereal, pasta and pet food into sealed glass or hard plastic containers as soon as you get them home.
- Put new bags of flour or grain in the freezer for a few days if you have had weevils before, which kills eggs inside.
How much will it cost?
For homes, the cost depends mostly on how big the pantry is and how far the insects have spread into other cupboards. For commercial sites, the size of the storage area, the type of commodity, the level of infestation and whether fumigation is needed all affect the price. Food businesses that need regular monitoring and audit paperwork are usually best on a service contract, and we quote free after an inspection.
Stored product insects breed faster in warm weather, so infestations that started quietly in winter often become obvious from November through to March. In Cape Town's dry summers, warm pantries next to ovens and geysers are particular hot spots. In heated warehouses and bakeries the problem can carry on all year.
Questions we get asked in Parow
Can you treat a block of flats in Parow for cockroaches?
Yes. Treating the whole block, including refuse areas and service ducts, gives the best long-term result.
Where did these insects come from?
Usually in a packet of food bought already infested, often in small numbers you could not see. They then spread to other products in the cupboard.
Do you come out to Parow for stored product pest control?
Yes. Parow is part of our regular Northern Suburbs route, along with Goodwood, Bellville, Elsies River, Panorama. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
Do I have to throw everything away?
Throw away anything infested and anything open that is close to it. Unopened tins and sealed jars are generally fine once wiped down.
Can I spray inside the pantry?
We would not recommend it. A thorough clean-out and sealed storage do more, and any residual treatment should be targeted into cracks, not sprayed over shelves that hold food.
Why are rats common around Voortrekker Road in Parow?
The shops, food outlets and stormwater channels give rats plenty of food and shelter. Keeping bins sealed and gaps closed reduces how often they move into nearby buildings.
