What we deal with
The rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae, is the one most Cape Town households meet, a tiny dark brown beetle with four faint orange spots and a long snout, found in rice, maize, pasta and wheat-based products. Its close relative, the maize weevil, looks almost identical and is common in maize meal, samp and mealies stored in bulk, including on Boland farms. The granary weevil cannot fly, has no spots and is mostly a problem in stored wheat and barley in mills and silos. Bean and pea weevils are actually seed beetles rather than true weevils, but people call them weevils because they leave round holes in dried beans, lentils and peas. Garden weevils that chew plant leaves are a separate problem and are not covered by a pantry treatment.
Signs to look for
Tick every sign you have noticed. It takes ten seconds.
Why it matters: Weevils are not known to bite or carry disease, but they ruin food, and the larvae inside the grain mean you cannot simply sieve them out. Infested stock has to be thrown away, which is a real cost for bakeries, restaurants, food distributors and farms with stored maize. In bulk storage, weevil activity creates heat and moisture pockets that encourage mould and further spoilage. For food businesses, weevils found by a customer or an auditor can damage trust very quickly.
How we treat it
Weevils develop inside the grain, so no surface spray can reach them while they are still in the kernel; removing infested food is the main treatment. We inspect every grain, pulse and cereal product, separate what is infested, and bag it for disposal. Shelves, cupboards and the gaps around them are vacuumed and cleaned, and we apply a targeted crack and crevice treatment where weevils are sheltering, keeping it well away from open food. For commercial stores and farm silos with heavy infestations of bulk grain, fumigation may be the only practical option, and we plan that as a separate job. Pheromone or food-baited traps are then used to check that numbers have dropped.
- Confirm it is a weevil
A WhatsApp photo is often enough to tell a rice weevil from a flour beetle or a seed beetle, which affects where we look.
- Inspect all grain products
Rice, maize meal, samp, pasta, flour, beans, lentils and birdseed are opened and checked.
- Remove infested stock
Anything with live weevils, holes or dust is bagged and taken out of the kitchen or storeroom.
- Clean and treat
Shelving and cracks are vacuumed and given a targeted treatment where adult weevils hide.
- Monitor
Traps are placed to catch any survivors and to show whether the problem is resolved.
- Report and storage advice
You get a report and practical advice on sealed containers, freezing and stock rotation.
Things most people don't know
Many people throw out the rice and keep the open bag of pasta next to it. Weevils happily breed in pasta too, so check everything made from grain.
A technician's first check is the backs of cupboards and the containers people forget, like a jar of popcorn kernels or a bag of birdseed in the garage.
Weevils develop inside the grain, which is why sprays do not work. The only real solution is to remove the infested food and protect the rest.
When it peaks in Cape Town
Weevils breed much faster in warm conditions, so infestations that began unnoticed in winter usually show up between November and March. A rice weevil can go from egg to adult in about a month in summer heat, compared with several months in a cold Cape winter. Warm, humid pantries can keep them active all year.
DIY or call a professional?
For a weevil problem in a home kitchen, a ruthless clean-out and sealed containers solve it most of the time, and you probably do not need us. Where it gets harder is when you keep finding weevils weeks later, which usually means one forgotten source, or when there is a lot of stored grain at stake. Do not bother with insecticide sprays in the pantry; they do nothing to the larvae inside the grain.
What affects the price
For a home, the price mostly depends on how many cupboards are involved and whether the weevils have spread into other rooms. For businesses and farms, the volume of stored grain, how it is stored and whether fumigation is needed are the big factors. We quote for free, and food businesses with ongoing risk often prefer a contract with regular monitoring.
Preventing it coming back
- Store rice, maize meal and samp in airtight glass or thick plastic containers, because weevils chew through thin plastic bags and cardboard.
- Freeze new bags of rice or flour for three or four days before you store them if weevils have been a problem before.
- Use older stock first and avoid topping up a container with new grain on top of old.
- Check dried beans and lentils for small round holes before putting them in the cupboard.
- Keep grain away from the warmest spots in the kitchen, like the cupboard above the oven or next to the geyser.
- On farms and smallholdings, clean out silos and bins completely before refilling with new harvest.
Frequently asked questions
How did weevils get into my sealed bag of rice?
The eggs were most likely already inside the grains when you bought it. Female weevils lay eggs inside individual kernels, so the bag can look perfect from the outside.
Can I eat rice that had weevils in it?
It is not known to be harmful, but the grain is contaminated with insects and droppings, and we would throw it away.
Will weevils spread to the rest of the house?
Adults wander, so you may see them on walls and counters, but they only breed where there is grain or seed. Clearing the food source stops them.
Do bay leaves keep weevils away?
There is little evidence they work. Airtight containers and freezing new stock are far more reliable.
Are the weevils in my beans the same as in my rice?
No. Bean weevils are seed beetles that only attack pulses, while rice and maize weevils attack grain, but the clean-out and storage advice is much the same.
Can you treat weevils in a silo or warehouse?
Yes. Larger stores may need fumigation or regular monitoring, and we will inspect and quote for the right approach.
