Weevil Control in Constantia
Weevil Control in ConstantiaFree photo ID on WhatsApp

Constantia means big plots, old oaks, vineyards and horses, so pest control here is often as much about the garden and outbuildings as the house itself.

Constantia: what drives stored product pests here

Horse feed, chicken feed and bulk dog food attract weevils, grain moths and mice. Restaurants and tasting rooms in the valley also need their dry stores checked regularly.

Many homes are large, older properties on generous stands, some Cape Dutch in style with thatched roofs, others modern with big glass walls and pool decks. Staff cottages, garages, stables and pool houses all add extra buildings that need checking. The newer security estates have neater gardens but still back straight onto greenbelts.

A note from the field

Sealed containers protect your other food from weevils, but they also contain an infestation if you buy a bad bag, so you only lose that one container.

Weevils develop inside the grain, which is why sprays do not work. The only real solution is to remove the infested food and protect the rest.

How the treatment works

Weevils develop inside the grain, so no surface spray can reach them while they are still in the kernel; removing infested food is the main treatment. We inspect every grain, pulse and cereal product, separate what is infested, and bag it for disposal. Shelves, cupboards and the gaps around them are vacuumed and cleaned, and we apply a targeted crack and crevice treatment where weevils are sheltering, keeping it well away from open food. For commercial stores and farm silos with heavy infestations of bulk grain, fumigation may be the only practical option, and we plan that as a separate job. Pheromone or food-baited traps are then used to check that numbers have dropped.

Your weevil control, step by step6 steps
  1. Confirm it is a weevil

A WhatsApp photo is often enough to tell a rice weevil from a flour beetle or a seed beetle, which affects where we look.

  2. Inspect all grain products

Rice, maize meal, samp, pasta, flour, beans, lentils and birdseed are opened and checked.

  3. Remove infested stock

Anything with live weevils, holes or dust is bagged and taken out of the kitchen or storeroom.

  4. Clean and treat

Shelving and cracks are vacuumed and given a targeted treatment where adult weevils hide.

  5. Monitor

Traps are placed to catch any survivors and to show whether the problem is resolved.

  6. Report and storage advice

You get a report and practical advice on sealed containers, freezing and stock rotation.

Prevention that actually works

  • On farms and smallholdings, clean out silos and bins completely before refilling with new harvest.
  • Keep grain away from the warmest spots in the kitchen, like the cupboard above the oven or next to the geyser.
  • Use older stock first and avoid topping up a container with new grain on top of old.
  • Store rice, maize meal and samp in airtight glass or thick plastic containers, because weevils chew through thin plastic bags and cardboard.
  • Check dried beans and lentils for small round holes before putting them in the cupboard.
Local tip for ConstantiaStore horse and poultry feed in sealed metal bins rather than open sacks, and pick up fallen fruit and acorns near the house.

How much will it cost?

For a home, the price mostly depends on how many cupboards are involved and whether the weevils have spread into other rooms. For businesses and farms, the volume of stored grain, how it is stored and whether fumigation is needed are the big factors. We quote for free, and food businesses with ongoing risk often prefer a contract with regular monitoring.

Weevils breed much faster in warm conditions, so infestations that began unnoticed in winter usually show up between November and March. A rice weevil can go from egg to adult in about a month in summer heat, compared with several months in a cold Cape winter. Warm, humid pantries can keep them active all year.

Questions we get asked in Constantia

How did weevils get into my sealed bag of rice?

The eggs were most likely already inside the grains when you bought it. Female weevils lay eggs inside individual kernels, so the bag can look perfect from the outside.

Can you treat weevils in a silo or warehouse?

Yes. Larger stores may need fumigation or regular monitoring, and we will inspect and quote for the right approach.

Do you come out to Constantia for weevil control?

Yes. Constantia is part of our regular Southern Suburbs route, along with Bergvliet, Tokai, Plumstead, Diep River. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

Are the weevils in my beans the same as in my rice?

No. Bean weevils are seed beetles that only attack pulses, while rice and maize weevils attack grain, but the clean-out and storage advice is much the same.

Will weevils spread to the rest of the house?

Adults wander, so you may see them on walls and counters, but they only breed where there is grain or seed. Clearing the food source stops them.

Do bay leaves keep weevils away?

There is little evidence they work. Airtight containers and freezing new stock are far more reliable.

Send a photo of the beetle to us on WhatsApp and we will confirm whether it is a weevil and what to do in your Constantia kitchen.
