Gugulethu is busy, close-knit and built tight, so a pest problem in one home rarely stays there for long. Most of the calls we would expect here are about rats in yards and roofs, cockroaches moving between shared walls, and flies around refuse points in summer.
Gugulethu: what drives stored product pests here
Spaza shops and home bakers deal with weevils in maize meal, rice and flour, and pantry moths in bulk bags. Rotating stock and keeping grains in sealed tubs helps a lot.
The older parts are rows of council-built houses on small plots, many now extended with brick additions and backyard rooms. Hostels converted to family units, newer RDP homes and informal structures sit alongside them. Where a roof line runs across several attached homes, mice and rats travel along it freely, and zinc or timber add-ons leave gaps at ground level that are hard to seal properly.
Rats are the big one, with German cockroaches close behind in kitchens and spaza shops. Flies spike in the hot months around bins, and fleas show up wherever there are dogs and cats in the yard. Bed bugs also come up in homes where several people share sleeping space or furniture changes hands often.
How to tell you have a problem
- Small moths flutter out when you open a cupboard, and rest on the ceiling at night.
- Grains of rice or maize have tiny round exit holes, or the bag has fine dust at the bottom.
- Silky webbing clumps cereal, nuts or pet food together, sometimes with small caterpillars inside.
- Pheromone traps or glue boards in a warehouse catch more beetles or moths each week.
From the technician
Throwing out the infested packet but leaving the shelves as they are is a common mistake. Eggs and larvae sit in the crumbs in corners and shelf joints, ready to start again.
What happens when we come out
The first and most important step is finding and removing every infested product, because no treatment works while the insects still have food. Shelves, cracks and crevices, and the gaps behind and under cupboards and racking are vacuumed out to remove spilt product and eggs. We then apply a targeted residual treatment into cracks and crevices, and an insect growth regulator where the pest is a moth or beetle that keeps cycling through. Pheromone traps for moths and beetles go in to monitor for survivors and new arrivals. In warehouses, mills and food factories, larger infestations of bulk commodities may need fumigation, which we plan and carry out separately under the right controls.

Stopping a repeat visit
- Move flour, rice, cereal, pasta and pet food into sealed glass or hard plastic containers as soon as you get them home.
- Store birdseed and pet food away from the kitchen, as these are common sources of pantry moths.
- Wipe and vacuum pantry shelves when you restock, paying attention to corners and the gaps behind shelf supports.
- Buy dry goods in amounts you will use within a month or two, rather than letting big bags sit at the back of the cupboard.
- In commercial stores, rotate stock on a first-in, first-out basis and keep pallets off walls so you can inspect behind them.
What affects the price
For homes, the cost depends mostly on how big the pantry is and how far the insects have spread into other cupboards. For commercial sites, the size of the storage area, the type of commodity, the level of infestation and whether fumigation is needed all affect the price. Food businesses that need regular monitoring and audit paperwork are usually best on a service contract, and we quote free after an inspection.
Stored product insects breed faster in warm weather, so infestations that started quietly in winter often become obvious from November through to March. In Cape Town's dry summers, warm pantries next to ovens and geysers are particular hot spots. In heated warehouses and bakeries the problem can carry on all year.
Questions we get asked in Gugulethu
Do you work in warehouses and food factories?
Yes. We do inspections, crack and crevice treatment, pheromone monitoring and scheduled visits, with reports you can use for food safety audits.
Can you treat a spaza shop for cockroaches without closing it for the day?
Yes. We can work after hours or early in the morning with gel baits and targeted treatments, and we will tell you exactly when it is safe to restock the shelves.
Are these insects harmful if I eat them by accident?
They are not known to be dangerous in small amounts, but infested food is contaminated and should not be eaten or sold.
Why do rats keep coming back to my yard in Gugulethu even after I put poison down?
Because the neighbours' yards are feeding them. Rats travel several houses in a night, so a single-yard treatment only clears your spot for a while; treating a few homes together and sealing burrows along the walls gives much better results.
Do you come out to Gugulethu for stored product pest control?
Yes. Gugulethu is part of our regular Cape Flats route, along with Nyanga, Manenberg, Bonteheuwel, Philippi. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
Can I spray inside the pantry?
We would not recommend it. A thorough clean-out and sealed storage do more, and any residual treatment should be targeted into cracks, not sprayed over shelves that hold food.
