Gardens takes its name from the Company's Garden, and the squirrels in there have been raising families in neighbouring roofs for generations. Add the restaurants on Kloof Street, old Victorian semis and a lot of flats, and you get a busy mix of pest work.
The local picture in Gardens
Restaurants, bakeries and delis need regular stored-product checks, and households see weevils and pantry moths now and then.
Victorian and Edwardian semis with corrugated iron roofs, broekie lace stoeps and wooden floors sit alongside blocks of flats and modern apartments. Old houses have hollow walls and suspended floors, so mice and rats can move through without being seen. Restaurants, coffee shops and bars along Kloof Street sit below residential flats. Many homes are rentals with frequent turnover.
Squirrels and roof rats in ceilings are the classic call. German cockroaches in restaurant kitchens and the flats above them come next, followed by Argentine ants and fishmoths in the old houses.
Worth knowing
The first thing a technician does is open things. We check the birdseed, the pet food, the forgotten bag of lentils and the spices, because that is where the source usually hides.
A lot of people think pantry insects mean a dirty kitchen. In reality they nearly always arrive in a packet from the shop, so even a spotless pantry can get them.
What gives them away
- Grains of rice or maize have tiny round exit holes, or the bag has fine dust at the bottom.
- Pheromone traps or glue boards in a warehouse catch more beetles or moths each week.
- Small brown or reddish beetles walk along pantry shelves or across the kitchen counter.
- Flour has a greyish tint, a musty smell or moves slightly when you look closely.
- Small moths flutter out when you open a cupboard, and rest on the ceiling at night.
Our process, step by step
The first and most important step is finding and removing every infested product, because no treatment works while the insects still have food. Shelves, cracks and crevices, and the gaps behind and under cupboards and racking are vacuumed out to remove spilt product and eggs. We then apply a targeted residual treatment into cracks and crevices, and an insect growth regulator where the pest is a moth or beetle that keeps cycling through. Pheromone traps for moths and beetles go in to monitor for survivors and new arrivals. In warehouses, mills and food factories, larger infestations of bulk commodities may need fumigation, which we plan and carry out separately under the right controls.
- Identify the insect
Beetle, weevil or moth, each points to different foods and hiding spots, so we confirm the species first, often from a WhatsApp photo.
- Find the source
We open and inspect stored products, shelving, racking and dead spaces to find which items are infested.
- Map the spread
We work out how far the insects have moved through the pantry, storeroom or warehouse.
- Clean out and treat
Infested stock is removed, the area is vacuumed, and cracks, crevices and shelving are treated.
- Monitor
Pheromone traps are placed to catch survivors and give early warning of any new infestation.
- Report and recommendations
You get a report with stock rotation, storage and hygiene recommendations, which is useful for food safety audits.
Prevention that actually works
- Buy dry goods in amounts you will use within a month or two, rather than letting big bags sit at the back of the cupboard.
- Store birdseed and pet food away from the kitchen, as these are common sources of pantry moths.
- In commercial stores, rotate stock on a first-in, first-out basis and keep pallets off walls so you can inspect behind them.
- Put new bags of flour or grain in the freezer for a few days if you have had weevils before, which kills eggs inside.
- Move flour, rice, cereal, pasta and pet food into sealed glass or hard plastic containers as soon as you get them home.
What affects the price
For homes, the cost depends mostly on how big the pantry is and how far the insects have spread into other cupboards. For commercial sites, the size of the storage area, the type of commodity, the level of infestation and whether fumigation is needed all affect the price. Food businesses that need regular monitoring and audit paperwork are usually best on a service contract, and we quote free after an inspection.
Stored product insects breed faster in warm weather, so infestations that started quietly in winter often become obvious from November through to March. In Cape Town's dry summers, warm pantries next to ovens and geysers are particular hot spots. In heated warehouses and bakeries the problem can carry on all year.

Do you come out to Gardens for stored product pest control?

Are the squirrels in my Gardens roof from the Company's Garden?
Very likely. Grey squirrels travel from the garden and the trees along the streets into roofs, often through gaps at the fascia. Sealing those gaps once the roof is empty is the lasting fix.
Do old Victorian houses in Gardens have more borer?
They often do, because many still have original timber floors and roof structures. A beetle certificate inspection will show whether there is active infestation that needs treatment.
Do I have to throw everything away?
Throw away anything infested and anything open that is close to it. Unopened tins and sealed jars are generally fine once wiped down.
What are pheromone traps?
Small sticky traps baited with a scent that attracts a specific moth or beetle. They show whether the insects are still around and help us measure how well the treatment worked.
Are these insects harmful if I eat them by accident?
