Vredehoek clings to the slopes of Devil's Peak above the City Bowl, and it is one of the windiest corners of town when the South-Easter is up. Lots of apartment blocks, a few older houses and the mountain right above shape the pest picture here.
Vredehoek: what drives stored product pests here
Pantry moths and weevils show up in flats where dry food is stored a long time. Small shops in the area need occasional stored product checks.
Mid-century apartment blocks dominate, with shared refuse rooms, service ducts and basement parking. Older semi-detached houses and some newer townhouses fill the gaps. In the flats, cockroaches and rodents spread through shared spaces; in the houses, roof gaps and old timber are the weak spots.
De Waal Drive and the mountain slopes form the upper boundary, with the greenbelt and Table Mountain National Park beyond. The South-Easter drives dust and leaves into every gap in summer. Winter brings heavy rain and cold, damp air that settles in ground-floor flats and basements.
A note from the field
For food businesses, a pest found by a customer does far more damage than a pest found on a pheromone trap. Monitoring is about catching problems before anyone else does.
Signs to look for
- Silky webbing clumps cereal, nuts or pet food together, sometimes with small caterpillars inside.
- Small brown or reddish beetles walk along pantry shelves or across the kitchen counter.
- Flour has a greyish tint, a musty smell or moves slightly when you look closely.
- Pheromone traps or glue boards in a warehouse catch more beetles or moths each week.
- Insects collect in the folds of packaging or along the seams of sealed boxes and bags.
- Small moths flutter out when you open a cupboard, and rest on the ceiling at night.
Infested food is contaminated with insect bodies, cast skins, droppings and webbing, and it has to be thrown out, which adds up quickly for a bakery, mill or food distributor. A single infested bag can spread to the rest of a pantry or storeroom, so losses grow fast if nobody checks. For manufacturers and exporters, an infestation can mean rejected consignments, failed audits and customer complaints. Some stored product beetles also cause damp, mouldy pockets in bulk grain, which encourages further spoilage.
How the treatment works
The first and most important step is finding and removing every infested product, because no treatment works while the insects still have food. Shelves, cracks and crevices, and the gaps behind and under cupboards and racking are vacuumed out to remove spilt product and eggs. We then apply a targeted residual treatment into cracks and crevices, and an insect growth regulator where the pest is a moth or beetle that keeps cycling through. Pheromone traps for moths and beetles go in to monitor for survivors and new arrivals. In warehouses, mills and food factories, larger infestations of bulk commodities may need fumigation, which we plan and carry out separately under the right controls.

Keeping them out afterwards
- Put new bags of flour or grain in the freezer for a few days if you have had weevils before, which kills eggs inside.
- Buy dry goods in amounts you will use within a month or two, rather than letting big bags sit at the back of the cupboard.
- Store birdseed and pet food away from the kitchen, as these are common sources of pantry moths.
- Wipe and vacuum pantry shelves when you restock, paying attention to corners and the gaps behind shelf supports.
- In commercial stores, rotate stock on a first-in, first-out basis and keep pallets off walls so you can inspect behind them.
What affects the price
For homes, the cost depends mostly on how big the pantry is and how far the insects have spread into other cupboards. For commercial sites, the size of the storage area, the type of commodity, the level of infestation and whether fumigation is needed all affect the price. Food businesses that need regular monitoring and audit paperwork are usually best on a service contract, and we quote free after an inspection.
Stored product insects breed faster in warm weather, so infestations that started quietly in winter often become obvious from November through to March. In Cape Town's dry summers, warm pantries next to ovens and geysers are particular hot spots. In heated warehouses and bakeries the problem can carry on all year.
Stored Product Pest Control questions from Vredehoek
Do you come out to Vredehoek for stored product pest control?
Yes. Vredehoek is part of our regular City Bowl & Atlantic Seaboard route, along with Oranjezicht, Gardens, Zonnebloem, Walmer Estate. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
What are pheromone traps?
Small sticky traps baited with a scent that attracts a specific moth or beetle. They show whether the insects are still around and help us measure how well the treatment worked.
Why are there cockroaches in my Vredehoek flat when I keep it spotless?
In older blocks they usually come through shared ducts and pipes from other units or the refuse room. A building-wide treatment through the body corporate gives the best results.
Do you work in warehouses and food factories?
Yes. We do inspections, crack and crevice treatment, pheromone monitoring and scheduled visits, with reports you can use for food safety audits.
Are these insects harmful if I eat them by accident?
They are not known to be dangerous in small amounts, but infested food is contaminated and should not be eaten or sold.
Do rats in Vredehoek come from the mountain?
Some do, especially near De Waal Drive and the greenbelt. Keeping refuse rooms clean and sealing basement gaps reduces them a lot.
