The Norway rat, also called the brown or sewer rat, is the heavier one with a blunt nose and a tail shorter than its body. It burrows under paving, sheds and compost heaps and travels along drains and stormwater pipes, so we see it near rivers, canals and refuse areas. The roof rat, or black rat, is slimmer with big ears and a long tail, and it is an excellent climber that runs along fences, power lines and trees straight into the ceiling. Most of the 'rats in the roof' calls in leafy suburbs are roof rats. Knowing which one you have tells us whether to focus on the ground or the roof line.
Why rat problems differ across Cape Town
Rats follow water, food and cover, and Cape Town spreads those out very unevenly. A rat problem in a Sea Point apartment block has little in common with one on a Philippi smallholding. Knowing your part of the city tells us which rat to expect and where to start looking, often before we have left the van.
It also changes what you can usefully do yourself. In the leafy suburbs the biggest single fix is often a saw and a ladder. On the Flats it is the state of the boundary wall and what is lying against it. Near the water it is drain covers and closed bins.
Rat control by Cape Town region
City Bowl and Atlantic Seaboard
Dense older buildings, restaurant strips and a big stormwater network bring Norway rats up through drains and into bin areas. Higher up, in Tamboerskloof, Oranjezicht and Higgovale, roof rats come in from the mountain-side gardens. Old service shafts and shared walls let rats move between neighbouring properties.
Southern Suburbs
Big trees, established gardens and older homes with suspended timber floors make this roof rat country. The Liesbeek and Black River corridors add Norway rats, so Mowbray, Observatory and Rondebosch can have both kinds at once.
South Peninsula
Around Zandvlei, Marina da Gama and the harbours at Kalk Bay and Simon's Town, rats live along the water's edge and around boats, bait and restaurant waste. Holiday homes shut up for the winter are easy to move into without anyone noticing.
Northern Suburbs
Newer townhouse complexes sit alongside older homes, canals and busy commercial areas. Rats travel along the banks of the Elsieskraal and Kuils rivers and through shared drainage between units, so a single owner treating alone often sees them return.
Blaauwberg and West Coast
The south-easter and open, sandy ground push rats into anything sheltered: garages, bin enclosures, boat sheds and the space under timber decks. The Diep River and the edges of the Milnerton lagoon are the usual hotspots.
Cape Flats
Soft sandy soil is easy digging, and Norway rats take full advantage under slabs, Wendy houses and boundary walls. Dumping and blocked canals keep them fed, so proofing and a cleaned-up street matter as much as the traps.
Helderberg and Boland
Farm sheds, feed stores, stables and the Lourens River through Somerset West and Strand. Older farm buildings with stone walls, open eaves and gaps where roof sheets meet the wall give rats plenty of ways in. Expect both species, and plan stations around livestock and working dogs.
Is it really a rat burrow?
Not every hole in a sandy Cape Flats or West Coast garden belongs to a rat. Mole-rats, which are common in sandy Western Cape soil, push up fresh mounds of loose sand and keep their tunnels plugged, so you see the heap but rarely an open hole. They eat roots and bulbs, live underground and do not come into the house, and rat bait is the wrong answer for them.
A rat hole stays open. You can usually follow a worn track from it to the compost, the bins or the chicken run, and you will find droppings nearby. Holes along the base of a wall or under a paving slab, with fresh sand kicked out in the morning, point to rats. If you cannot tell, a WhatsApp photo with something for scale is usually enough for us to say.
