Ask a Capetonian about the Southern Suburbs and they will picture oak-lined avenues, the mountain looming over Newlands and the rain that rolls in off it in winter. Those same oaks, gardens and wet months are why squirrels, rats, ants and wood borer make up so much of our work between Rondebosch and Constantia.

Rat Control by suburb

We cover all 29 suburbs on our Southern Suburbs route. Each suburb page covers what we find there and what works for those streets and buildings.

Roof rats across the Southern Suburbs

From Rondebosch to Wynberg, the Southern Suburbs' tree canopy works like a highway for roof rats. They run along oak and plane tree branches and the overhead power and phone lines from garden to garden, and drop onto roofs where old fascia boards and gaps at the eaves let them into deep roof voids. At ground level, brown rats use the Liesbeek River, the railway reserve along the Southern Line and the stormwater drains, and they gather wherever bins are left open behind shops and student houses.

We trap in the roof and bait outside in lockable stations, then seal the entry points so the next rat can't use them. The job is only finished when the roof line is closed.

This side of Table Mountain catches far more rain than the rest of the city, and Newlands is among the wettest suburbs in Cape Town. Kirstenbosch, Newlands Forest and the mountain slopes border the upper edge, while the Liesbeek River winds through Newlands and Rondebosch toward the Black River. Winter damp encourages fishmoths and borer, and the canopy of oaks and pines keeps grey squirrels well supplied.

Grey squirrels and roof rats in ceilings are the classic Southern Suburbs complaint, especially in autumn and winter.

Why it matters: Rats spread leptospirosis through their urine, and they can carry salmonella and other diseases onto food surfaces. They gnaw on electrical cables in roofs, which can start fires, and chew through water pipes and geyser fittings. Rats also bite, especially when cornered or when a small child or sleeping person is involved. A couple of rats can become dozens within a season because they breed fast.

Something most people miss

Rats are neophobic, which means they avoid new things. A trap that has not been touched for a few days is not a failure; it often works after they get used to it.

How the treatment works

First we identify the rat and track its route, because a roof rat problem is solved at the roof line and a Norway rat problem at ground level and in the drains. In the roof and inside the house we prefer heavy-duty snap traps, so there is no smell from a rat dying in the ceiling. Outdoors we use lockable, tamper-resistant bait stations, positioned along runs and fixed so they cannot be moved, and we do a bait risk assessment where pets, children or owls are around. Then we proof: steel mesh over vents, sealing gaps around pipes and cables, and advice on trimming branches. Burrows are treated and collapsed after the colony is dealt with.

Prevention that actually works

  • Pick up fallen fruit, avocados and pet food every evening.
  • Do not leave building rubble or wood piles against the house for months.
  • Store feed and bird seed in metal bins with tight lids.
  • Trim back trees and creepers at least a metre from the roof, because roof rats jump from them.
  • Keep compost in a closed bin and do not add meat or cooked food.
Local tip for Southern SuburbsListen for scratching at dusk and just before dawn. Roof rats are most active then, which helps us find where they're getting in.

Pricing, honestly

Price depends on the size of the property, which rat species you have and how many entry points need proofing. A roof rat problem with lots of overhanging trees takes more proofing work than a single burrow in the garden. Follow-up visits are part of most rat jobs and are included in the free quote.

One rat in a garden shed can be caught with a decent snap trap and some patience. Rats in the roof are smart and cautious, and loose poison from the shop often ends with a smell in the ceiling and a sick dog, so I would call someone in once they are in the house.

Rat Control questions from Southern Suburbs

How can I tell if it's rats or squirrels in my Southern Suburbs ceiling?

Squirrels are active in the day and make heavier thumping sounds. Rats are active at night and leave small dark droppings. We can confirm on an inspection.

Is there a guarantee?

Yes, our treatments carry a minimum 3-month guarantee.

How do I get grey squirrels out of my roof in the Southern Suburbs?

The first step is finding and sealing every entry point once the squirrels are out, usually along fascias near trees. We can inspect your roof and advise on proofing and safe removal.

Can you get rid of rats near a river or canal?

Yes, but properties near water usually need ongoing stations and good proofing, because new rats keep arriving.

How do I know if it is rats or mice?

Rat droppings are much larger, roughly raisin-sized, and rats are noisier. Send a photo of the droppings on WhatsApp and we will tell you.

Will poison make the rats smell in the ceiling?

It can, which is why we prefer traps in the roof and keep bait in outside stations.
