Wood Borer Treatment in Helderberg
Wood Borer Treatment in HelderbergFree photo ID on WhatsApp

The Helderberg basin runs from the mountain down to False Bay, taking in Somerset West, Strand, Gordon's Bay and the farm land in between. It is a big, varied patch, so the pests change a lot depending on whether you are on a vineyard edge, in a security estate or in a beachfront flat.

Wood Borer Treatment by suburb

We cover all 5 suburbs on our Helderberg route. Each suburb page covers what we find there and what works for those streets and buildings.

Helderberg: what drives timber pests here

Thatched lapas and timber-framed buildings on farms and estates can host wood borer. Beetle certificate inspections are routine when houses change hands in the area.

There is everything here: older family homes in Somerset West, high-rise flats along the Strand beachfront, large security estates on the slopes and smallholdings and farm buildings out towards Firgrove. Estates with lots of garden space and water features bring mosquitoes and rodents, while seafront flats deal more with cockroaches and pigeons. Farm sheds and stables have their own fly and rodent pressure.

The Helderberg mountain and the Hottentots-Holland range catch a lot of winter rain, and the Lourens River runs down to the sea through Somerset West. Vineyards and orchards surround the town, and the South-Easter howls across False Bay in summer. Mountain edge homes see more scorpions, spiders and the odd snake-season visitor, while lower areas near the river and vleis get mosquitoes.

How to tell you have a problem

  1. Adult beetles found on windowsills or near lights in late spring and summer.
  2. Faint scratching or ticking sounds from roof timbers on quiet nights.
  3. Small round or oval exit holes in timber, furniture or floorboards.
  4. A beetle inspection for a property transfer has flagged activity.
  5. Fine powder, called frass, building up under wooden items or on the floor below roof timbers.
  6. Floorboards that feel soft or crumble at the edges when you press on them.

A note from the field

The mistake people make is filling the holes with wood filler and polishing over them. The larvae are inside the wood, not in the holes.

How the treatment works

We start with an inspection to confirm the beetle species and whether the holes are active or old, because old damage does not need treating. Exposed timber such as roof trusses, beams and floor joists is treated with a residual borer spray that penetrates the surface and kills emerging beetles and young larvae. Where the wood is thick or the infestation is deep, we inject product directly into the flight holes and drilled galleries. Badly weakened timber should be replaced by a builder, and we tell you which pieces are past saving. Valuable furniture can be sealed and fumigated instead.

  1. Inspection

We check the roof space, floors and timber features with good lighting and probe suspect wood.

  2. Identify the beetle

We confirm the species from the holes, frass and any beetles found, and report European house borer where required.

  3. Mark the damage

Active areas are mapped, and any structurally weak timber is noted for replacement.

  4. Spray and inject

Exposed timber is sprayed and heavily infested pieces are injected through the exit holes.

  5. Report and certificate

You get a written report, and where needed a Certificate of Compliance for the property transfer.

Keeping them out afterwards

  • Check second-hand furniture for holes and fresh powder before you bring it home.
  • If you are buying or selling, book the beetle inspection early so it does not delay the transfer.
  • Use treated timber for any roofing, decking or building work, and check the treatment marks on it.
  • Have the roof timbers looked at every few years in an older house.
  • Seal or varnish bare wood surfaces, because beetles prefer to lay eggs in rough, untreated grain.
Local tip for HelderbergCheck under garden furniture, braai covers and eaves for paper wasp nests in early spring, when they are still small. A nest the size of a coin in September can be the size of a fist by December.

What affects the price

The price depends on how much timber needs treating, how easy the roof space is to get into and which beetle we are dealing with. A single piece of furniture is a very different job to a full roof of trusses. Injection work, replacement advice and certificates for transfers are all included in a free quote once we have seen the property.

You can brush a borer product onto a small piece of furniture yourself and it may do the job. Roof timbers are a different story: getting the product into every face of every truss in a hot, cramped roof is hard work, and missing the European house borer is a real problem. I would always get the roof looked at professionally.

Questions we get asked in Helderberg

How do I know if the borer holes are still active?

Look for fresh, pale powder below the holes and clean, sharp edges on the holes themselves. Old holes are usually darker and dusty with no new frass.

Will treatment smell or stain the wood?

Most borer treatments dry with little smell and do not stain bare timber. Polished furniture is treated more carefully.

Do you come out to Helderberg for wood borer treatment?

Yes. Helderberg is part of our regular Helderberg route, along with Somerset West, Strand, Gordon's Bay, Firgrove. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

Do you cover farms and smallholdings around Somerset West?

Yes, we cover the whole Helderberg, including farms, smallholdings and estates. Send us a photo on WhatsApp and we can give you a free quote.

Is the European house borer really that serious?

Yes. It attacks structural softwood and is a notifiable pest in the Western Cape, so suspected cases have to be reported and treated.

Why do we get more mice in the Helderberg in autumn?

When the vineyards and fields are harvested and the rain starts, field mice lose food and cover and move towards houses. A pre-winter check of door seals and roof gaps helps a lot.
