The Northern Suburbs are home turf for us, since our base is in Brackenfell. From Goodwood and Parow out to Durbanville and Kraaifontein, we see the full range of pests, from ceiling rats to summer ant invasions.
Bird Proofing by suburb
We cover all 16 suburbs on our Northern Suburbs route. Each suburb page covers what we find there and what works for those streets and buildings.

Birds in Northern Suburbs: what we see
Pigeons nest under solar panels and on shopping centre ledges. Egyptian geese settle around estate dams and parks.
Housing runs from older homes and flats along Voortrekker Road to large family homes in Durbanville and Welgemoed, and big newer security estates further out. Townhouse complexes with shared walls and gardens are common. Commercial and industrial areas around Bellville, Parow and Kuils River add warehouses and food businesses. Each type comes with its own pest pattern, from shared wall cockroaches to estate rodents.
Inland from the coast, the Northern Suburbs get hotter, drier summers and cold, wet winters. The Tygerberg hills, the Durbanville wine farms and stretches of open veld edge many suburbs. Rivers like the Kuils River and various stormwater canals run through the area.
Rats and mice in ceilings top the list in winter, while ants, fleas and flies dominate summer. Cockroaches in flats and townhouses are a year-round issue. Wasps, scorpions and fishmoths round out the regular calls.
Tell-tale signs
- A sour smell around a roof area where birds have been nesting for a long time.
- Cooing, scratching or flapping in the roof space or behind the gutters early in the morning.
- Blocked gutters and downpipes full of nesting material.
- Birds regularly perching in the same spots over doorways or walkways.
Worth knowing
Proofing over an active nest is a mistake. You either trap birds inside or they break through, so the clean-out always comes first.
How we handle bird proofing in Northern Suburbs
We start by watching where the birds actually land and nest, because proofing the wrong ledge is a waste of money. Ledges and beams get bird spikes or tensioned wire systems that stop birds settling. Larger open areas such as courtyards, loading bays and light wells get bird netting fixed to a frame so birds cannot get in at all. Gaps under solar panels and roof tiles are closed with mesh or panel skirting so pigeons cannot nest underneath. Old nests and droppings are removed first, and if bird mites are present we treat the area as well.
- Site survey
We look at where the birds roost, nest and enter, and which surfaces need protecting.
- Proposal
We recommend the right mix of netting, spikes, wire or mesh for each spot and explain why.
- Clean-out
Nests, droppings and debris are removed safely before anything is fitted.
- Install proofing
Netting, spikes, wire or mesh is fixed so it is neat and secure against the south-easter.
- Mite treatment and report
If bird mites are present we treat the area, and you get a written report.
Keeping them out afterwards
- Fit mesh skirting around new solar panels at installation, before birds discover the gap.
- Clean gutters before winter, and check for nesting material at the same time.
- Keep refuse bins closed and clean up spilt food around outdoor eating areas.
- Deal with the first nest quickly. Pigeons that breed on a site get attached to it.
- Close off broken air vents, missing tiles and open eaves as soon as you notice them.
What affects the price
The cost depends on how many areas need proofing, how high they are and how much access equipment is needed. Netting a large courtyard or a warehouse roof is a bigger job than spiking a few ledges. Clean-out of heavy droppings and any mite treatment are included in the free quote once we have done the site survey.
A few spikes on a low windowsill is a fine DIY job. Netting and solar panel proofing at height is not, both for safety and because poorly tensioned netting sags, traps birds and ends up looking messy. I would rather do it once and do it properly.
Frequently asked questions
Are you close enough to respond quickly in the Northern Suburbs?
Yes, we are based in Brackenfell, and our average turnaround is about 48 hours depending on the season. For urgent advice there is a 24-hour emergency line.
Do you come out to Northern Suburbs for bird proofing?
Yes. Northern Suburbs is part of our regular Northern Suburbs route, along with Bellville, Durbanville, Parow, Goodwood. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
Do bird spikes hurt the birds?
No. The spikes are blunt and simply stop birds from landing comfortably. They move somewhere else.
Can you stop pigeons nesting under my solar panels?
Yes. We clean out the nests and fit mesh skirting around the panel edges so birds cannot get underneath.
Why do ants get worse in the Northern Suburbs in summer?
The inland heat dries out gardens, so ant colonies come indoors looking for water and food. Gel baits on their trails and sealing entry points sort it out.
Do you use poison on pigeons?
No. Bird proofing is about physical exclusion, which is safer and lasts longer than trying to kill birds.
