Bird Proofing Kenilworth

Pigeons under the solar panels is probably the most common bird problem we see in Kenilworth. Bird proofing stops pigeons and other birds from roosting and nesting on your building by physically blocking them out. Across Cape Town and the Boland we fit netting, spikes and mesh to ledges, roof gaps and solar panels so the birds simply move on, without poisons.

Kenilworth is built around the racecourse, with grand old homes on plane-tree avenues on one side and blocks of flats crowding toward Main Road and the railway on the other. That mix of old timber, big trees and dense flats keeps us busy with squirrels, rats and roaches in roughly equal measure.

Kenilworth: what drives birds here

Pigeons roost on blocks of flats and ledges around Kenilworth Centre. Egyptian geese graze sports fields and larger lawns near the racecourse.

Victorian and Edwardian houses with high ceilings, suspended timber floors and deep roof voids sit alongside 1960s and 70s blocks of flats, townhouse complexes and retirement villages. The old houses give rodents space under floors and in roofs, while the flats share plumbing stacks and refuse rooms that let German cockroaches move from unit to unit. Student and rental flats near the railway turn over regularly, which can introduce bed bugs.

The Kenilworth Racecourse Conservation Area protects one of the last patches of Cape Flats sand fynbos, home to small mammals, frogs and a wetland that fills in winter. Avenues of plane trees and oaks shade many streets, and the Southern line railway runs along the western edge past Kenilworth station. Winter brings heavy rain off the mountain, damp underfloor spaces and rodents moving indoors.

Grey squirrels and roof rats in ceilings are the classic Kenilworth complaint, especially in older homes near big trees. German cockroaches in the flats near Main Road come a close second. Argentine ants, fishmoths and wood borer in old floors make up the rest.

Something most people miss

Proofing over an active nest is a mistake. You either trap birds inside or they break through, so the clean-out always comes first.

What gives them away

  1. Birds regularly perching in the same spots over doorways or walkways.
  2. Blocked gutters and downpipes full of nesting material.
  3. Tiny mites crawling on walls or bedding near a nest site.
  4. Cooing, scratching or flapping in the roof space or behind the gutters early in the morning.
  5. Droppings building up on ledges, walls, windowsills or under solar panels.

How the treatment works

We start by watching where the birds actually land and nest, because proofing the wrong ledge is a waste of money. Ledges and beams get bird spikes or tensioned wire systems that stop birds settling. Larger open areas such as courtyards, loading bays and light wells get bird netting fixed to a frame so birds cannot get in at all. Gaps under solar panels and roof tiles are closed with mesh or panel skirting so pigeons cannot nest underneath. Old nests and droppings are removed first, and if bird mites are present we treat the area as well.

Keeping them out afterwards

  • Fit mesh skirting around new solar panels at installation, before birds discover the gap.
  • Close off broken air vents, missing tiles and open eaves as soon as you notice them.
  • Do not feed pigeons near your home or business. A reliable food source keeps them coming back.
  • Deal with the first nest quickly. Pigeons that breed on a site get attached to it.
  • Clean gutters before winter, and check for nesting material at the same time.
Local tip for KenilworthWalk around your house in March and look up at the fascias and barge boards near trees for chew marks or small holes. Squirrels and roof rats move in before winter, and sealing a gap early saves a ceiling later.

How much will it cost?

The cost depends on how many areas need proofing, how high they are and how much access equipment is needed. Netting a large courtyard or a warehouse roof is a bigger job than spiking a few ledges. Clean-out of heavy droppings and any mite treatment are included in the free quote once we have done the site survey.

Pigeons breed throughout the year in Cape Town, so proofing is a year-round job. We see a rush in late winter and spring when birds start nesting heavily, and again before the winter rains when people find their gutters blocked.

Bird Proofing questions from Kenilworth

Do you use poison on pigeons?

No. Bird proofing is about physical exclusion, which is safer and lasts longer than trying to kill birds.

Do bird spikes hurt the birds?

No. The spikes are blunt and simply stop birds from landing comfortably. They move somewhere else.

Are the squirrels in my Kenilworth ceiling coming from the street trees?

Almost certainly. The plane trees and oaks give grey squirrels a direct route onto roofs, so cutting back overhanging branches and sealing chewed fascias is the first step.

Does living next to the Kenilworth racecourse mean more mice?

Often, yes, especially once it turns cold and wet. Homes on the boundary do well with sealed door sweeps and a few bait stations along the fence line.

Do you come out to Kenilworth for bird proofing?

Yes. Kenilworth is part of our regular Southern Suburbs route, along with Claremont, Harfield Village, Wynberg, Kenwyn. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

Can you do commercial buildings?

Yes, a lot of our bird proofing is shops, warehouses and blocks of flats where droppings affect staff and customers.
