Bird Proofing for Observatory homes and businesses

A shop entrance in Observatory with pigeons above it is a hard sell to customers. Bird proofing stops pigeons and other birds from roosting and nesting on your building by physically blocking them out. Across Cape Town and the Boland we fit netting, spikes and mesh to ledges, roof gaps and solar panels so the birds simply move on, without poisons.

Obs is a neighbourhood of narrow streets, terraced cottages and a Lower Main Road lined with restaurants and bars. Put two rivers, a hospital precinct and a lot of shared housing together and you get a steady diet of rat, cockroach and bed bug work.

Observatory: what drives birds here

Egyptian geese and other waterbirds use the river banks and open ground, and pigeons roost on shop ledges along Main Road. Ledge spikes and netting work well on commercial frontages.

Rows of little Victorian cottages share walls, roof spaces and sometimes back lanes, so pests move from house to house without ever going outside. Plenty have been split into digs for students and hospital staff. Restaurants and bars on Lower Main Road have cellars, back kitchens and bins in tight yards. Old suspended floors, cracked air bricks and lean-to kitchens added later are typical weak spots.

Rats are constant, particularly toward the river side and behind the Lower Main Road kitchens. German cockroaches move through shared kitchens and terraces. Bed bugs and fleas travel with tenants, and mosquitoes come off the rivers in late summer.

Tell-tale signs

  1. Cooing, scratching or flapping in the roof space or behind the gutters early in the morning.
  2. Twigs, grass and feathers sticking out from under roof tiles or panels.
  3. Blocked gutters and downpipes full of nesting material.
  4. Tiny mites crawling on walls or bedding near a nest site.
  5. Birds regularly perching in the same spots over doorways or walkways.
  6. Droppings building up on ledges, walls, windowsills or under solar panels.

Pigeon droppings are acidic, mark paintwork and roofing, and become slippery underfoot on walkways. Accumulated droppings and old nests can carry fungi and bacteria, and cleaning them up dry raises dust you do not want to breathe. Nests block gutters and cause water damage when winter rains back up into the roof. When birds leave a nest, their bird mites often wander indoors looking for a new host, which leads to itchy bites.

Something most people miss

For landlords and body corporates, pigeon problems become a tenant complaint quickly. Proofing the common areas once beats cleaning them every week.

How the treatment works

We start by watching where the birds actually land and nest, because proofing the wrong ledge is a waste of money. Ledges and beams get bird spikes or tensioned wire systems that stop birds settling. Larger open areas such as courtyards, loading bays and light wells get bird netting fixed to a frame so birds cannot get in at all. Gaps under solar panels and roof tiles are closed with mesh or panel skirting so pigeons cannot nest underneath. Old nests and droppings are removed first, and if bird mites are present we treat the area as well.

Stopping a repeat visit

  • Deal with the first nest quickly. Pigeons that breed on a site get attached to it.
  • Keep refuse bins closed and clean up spilt food around outdoor eating areas.
  • Fit mesh skirting around new solar panels at installation, before birds discover the gap.
  • Do not feed pigeons near your home or business. A reliable food source keeps them coming back.
  • Clean gutters before winter, and check for nesting material at the same time.
Local tip for ObservatoryIf you share a terrace wall, talk to your neighbour before booking a cockroach or rat treatment. Doing both houses together costs less in the long run than doing yours twice.

How much will it cost?

The cost depends on how many areas need proofing, how high they are and how much access equipment is needed. Netting a large courtyard or a warehouse roof is a bigger job than spiking a few ledges. Clean-out of heavy droppings and any mite treatment are included in the free quote once we have done the site survey.

A few spikes on a low windowsill is a fine DIY job. Netting and solar panel proofing at height is not, both for safety and because poorly tensioned netting sags, traps birds and ends up looking messy. I would rather do it once and do it properly.

Bird Proofing questions from Observatory

Do bird spikes hurt the birds?

No. The spikes are blunt and simply stop birds from landing comfortably. They move somewhere else.

Can you treat a whole row of cottages in Obs at once?

Yes, and we recommend it when cockroaches or rats are moving through shared walls. Coordinated treatment stops them simply shifting next door.

Do you come out to Observatory for bird proofing?

Yes. Observatory is part of our regular Southern Suburbs route, along with Mowbray, Salt River, Woodstock, Pinelands. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

Will netting be visible?

Bird netting is fine and usually black or clear, so from the ground it is hard to see once it is fitted.

Can you do commercial buildings?

Yes, a lot of our bird proofing is shops, warehouses and blocks of flats where droppings affect staff and customers.

Do Observatory rats come from the Black River and Liesbeek?

A lot of them do. The banks give them burrowing ground and water, and the old drain network links the river to homes, so blocking air bricks and drain gaps matters here.
