Moth Control in Camps Bay

Camps Bay has the beach, the palms and the Twelve Apostles towering behind it, and plenty of homes that are let out to visitors for part of the year. From our side, it is a suburb of big glass houses on steep plots, busy restaurants on Victoria Road and a mountain that sends rodents and insects downhill.

Stored product pests in Camps Bay: what we see

Restaurants and delis on the strip need stored product checks for flour beetles and moths. In villas, opened packets left in the pantry between lets often turn into pantry moth problems.

Houses step up the slope in terraces, with basements, garages and pool rooms cut into the hillside. These lower levels stay cool and damp and are where rats, fishmoths and cockroaches settle first. Guest houses and villas with frequent changeovers need fast, discreet treatments, and the restaurant strip along the beachfront has its own commercial kitchens and refuse areas to manage.

The Twelve Apostles and the Glen at Kloof Nek border the suburb, so fynbos, pine plantations and Table Mountain National Park are right on the doorstep. The South-Easter blows hard through summer, but the suburb can be still and hot in the late afternoon. Winter brings heavy rain off the mountain, and runoff through the stormwater channels pushes rodents out of their burrows.

Rats in basements and roof spaces top the list, followed by German cockroaches in restaurants and holiday homes. Ants trail in from irrigated gardens, and bed bugs come in with luggage in short-term lets. Gulls and pigeons cause mess on roofs, decks and pool areas.

How to tell you have a problem

  1. You find small silk tubes or cases stuck to fabric, carpets or the corners of cupboards.
  2. Webbing clumps together cereal, nuts or pet food in the pantry.
  3. Small whitish caterpillars crawl up pantry walls or across the ceiling looking for somewhere to pupate.
  4. Small, irregular holes appear in woollen jerseys, suits, scarves or blankets, often in hidden areas like under collars and arms.
  5. Moths are seen resting on the ceiling of the kitchen or a bedroom in the evening.
  6. Bare patches show up in woollen rugs or carpets under beds, sofas and other heavy furniture.

Something most people miss

Spraying the wardrobe and leaving the infested clothes inside is the most common mistake we see. The clothes need to come out and be washed, frozen or dry cleaned.

How the treatment works

Identifying the moth correctly matters most, because clothes moths and pantry moths are treated in completely different places. For clothes moths we remove and sort affected textiles, recommend washing at high temperature, dry cleaning or freezing, vacuum carpets and wardrobe floors thoroughly, and apply a residual treatment to carpet edges, skirting boards and the inside of cupboards, with an insect growth regulator where the infestation is heavy. For pantry moths we find and remove all infested food, vacuum shelving, and treat cracks and crevices where larvae pupate, keeping treatment away from food. In both cases we place species-specific pheromone traps to monitor results, since these catch male moths and show quickly whether the problem is under control.

Stopping a repeat visit

  • Vacuum under beds, sofas and along carpet edges regularly, since moths thrive in dark, undisturbed spots.
  • Freeze second-hand woollens, rugs or vintage clothing for a few days before putting them with your own things.
  • Wash or dry clean woollens before packing them away for summer, because moths prefer fabric with sweat and food stains on it.
  • Keep cereals, nuts, dried fruit and pet food in airtight containers, and check birdseed before bringing it inside.
  • Store woollen clothes and blankets in sealed bags or containers, not in open shelves or cardboard boxes.
Local tip for Camps BayBefore you lock up a Camps Bay house for the winter, clear out opened pantry food, put plugs in floor drains and close basement vents with mesh. You will come back to far fewer moths and cockroaches.

What affects the price

The cost depends on whether it is a clothes moth or pantry moth problem, the number of rooms or cupboards involved, and whether carpets and upholstery need treatment. Larger homes, guesthouses and retail spaces with many wardrobes or storage areas take more time and may need a follow-up visit. We give a free quote, usually after seeing photos or doing a quick inspection.

Pantry moths can often be solved at home with a ruthless clean-out and sealed containers, and we would say try that first. Clothes moths are harder, because the larvae hide in carpets, under furniture and in the corners of wardrobes, and missing a single spot means the problem returns. If you have valuable woollens, wool carpets or the moths keep coming back after cleaning, it is worth getting us in.

Frequently asked questions

Can you treat a Camps Bay holiday villa between guest bookings?

Yes, we can plan the visit for a changeover day and use odourless products where possible. Ask about after-hours or weekend visits if your turnaround is tight.

Do the moths I see on my patio light eat clothes?

Almost never. Clothes moths avoid light and are rarely seen flying. The big moths around outdoor lights are garden species.

Do rats in Camps Bay come down from the mountain?

Some do, especially roof rats living in the pines near the Glen and on the Twelve Apostles slopes. Others live around restaurant refuse areas, so we look at both before placing bait and sealing gaps.

Do you come out to Camps Bay for moth control?

Yes. Camps Bay is part of our regular City Bowl & Atlantic Seaboard route, along with Clifton, Bantry Bay, Atlantic Seaboard, Llandudno. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

Are pheromone traps enough on their own?

No. They catch male moths and show you how bad the problem is, but they do not kill the larvae doing the damage. They work best alongside cleaning and treatment.

How long does it take to get rid of moths?

With a proper clean-out and treatment, activity drops quickly, but we keep monitoring for several weeks because eggs and larvae can survive in hidden spots.
