The house fly, Musca domestica, is the one buzzing around the kitchen, and it breeds in rubbish, compost, manure and pet waste. The lesser house fly circles slowly under ceiling lights and is common near poultry and animal enclosures on smallholdings in the Boland. Blowflies, the metallic green and blue ones, breed in meat scraps and carcasses and often point to a dead rodent or bird in the roof. Fruit flies, Drosophila, are drawn to ripe fruit, spilt wine and beer, which is why they are a constant headache in Winelands tasting rooms and bars. Drain flies, also called moth flies, breed in the slime inside drains and grease traps, and stable flies, which bite, show up around horses and livestock.

Fly calls often start with someone telling us they have sprayed everything. Fair enough, flies are maddening. But most of the time lost on a fly problem is lost before we are called, so it makes sense to start there.

Fly control mistakes that waste a summer

  1. Ignoring the freezer after a power cut. A chest freezer in the garage that thawed during load shedding or an outage, with meat that quietly went off, can produce a burst of blowflies a week or two later. Check it before you blame anything else.
  2. Feeding the compost heap the wrong things. Cooked food, meat and bones in an open compost heap turn a useful garden feature into a fly nursery. Keep those for the bin and keep the heap turned and covered.
  3. Leaving pet food out on the stoep. Wet food in a bowl in the afternoon heat attracts flies within minutes, and they will lay eggs in it if it sits long enough.
  4. Putting a light trap where it can be seen from outside. A UV trap facing an open door or a street-facing window can draw flies in rather than catch the ones already there. Placement matters more than the size of the unit.
  5. Only looking at your own property. If your bins are clean and the flies keep coming, look over the wall. A neighbour's compost, chicken run or horse paddock can supply your kitchen all summer.

Fly problems by type of premises

  • Sectional title complexes. The shared bin room is the usual source, and because everyone uses it, nobody owns it. Ask the managing agent to schedule bin washing and keep the bin room door closed. One dirty bin store can supply the whole block.
  • Holiday lets and Airbnbs. Bins left full between changeovers in December and January heat are a classic problem. Ask cleaners to empty and rinse the outside bin at every changeover, not only the kitchen caddy.
  • Creches and schools. Nappy bins, kitchen waste and lunchbox leftovers in classroom bins over a long weekend all add up. We plan treatments for after hours and keep baits well out of reach of children.
  • Offices. The kitchenette bin, a forgotten fruit bowl on a desk and a staff fridge nobody cleans keep fruit flies going all year, especially in buildings with sealed windows and air conditioning.
  • Wine farms and tasting rooms. Around harvest in the Boland, grape skins, spilt wine and drip trays keep fruit flies busy. Clearing pressed skins away from the tasting area and rinsing drip trays daily makes a visible difference.
  • Smallholdings with horses or poultry. Manure heaps and damp bedding are prime breeding ground. Site the heap well away from the house and turn it so the hot centre does its work.

When the flies appear tells you a lot

Before you phone, watch for a few days and note when the flies show up and how many. Timing is a strong clue:

  1. A sudden burst of large blowflies in one room usually means something has died or spoiled nearby.
  2. Numbers that build after a late refuse collection or a long weekend point to the bin.
  3. Small flies in the bathroom first thing in the morning point to a drain.
  4. A steady flow every day, no matter what you clean, usually means the source is next door or on a nearby property with animals.

Those notes make the inspection quicker, and a WhatsApp photo of the fly helps us arrive with the right equipment. Businesses that need regular visits and records should look at our contract pest control. Quick answers

Are fly baits safe around pets?

We place baits in stations or on surfaces pets cannot reach, and keep them well away from food areas. Tell us about your pets and we will plan around them.

Do you help restaurants with health inspections?

Yes. We set up light traps, carry out scheduled treatments and give you a post-treatment report for every visit, which is what inspectors want to see.

How do I get rid of fruit flies?

Remove the ripe fruit, clean up spills and check under the fridge and in the recycling. A simple vinegar trap catches the stragglers, and if they persist, a drain is usually involved.
