Harfield Village is a pocket of narrow streets and old cottages squeezed between Claremont and Kenilworth, with plenty of cafes and restaurants on the main drag. Old buildings, lots of trees and food businesses close together mean rodents and cockroaches are always in the picture.
Harfield Village: what drives rodents here
Roof rats run the tree branches onto roofs and into ceilings, and mice live under the floors. Grey squirrels also chew their way into roof spaces, so we check eaves and fascias as well as the floor.
Most homes are semi-detached Victorian and Edwardian cottages with timber floors, suspended underfloor voids and pitched roofs. Many have been renovated, but the old air bricks, gaps around pipes and loose roof sheeting are still there. Those voids are perfect runways for rats and mice, and old timber floors and roof beams can carry wood borer.
Signs to look for
- Small droppings about the size of a grain of rice in drawers, cupboards and along skirtings.
- Nibbled corners of cereal boxes, bread bags and pet food packets.
- A sharp, ammonia-like smell inside closed cupboards.
- Light scratching in the walls or under the kitchen units at night.
- Tiny footprints or tail marks in dust on top of cupboards or in the garage.
Something most people miss
Mice do not need to drink much water, because they get most of it from their food. That is why they can live happily in a dry pantry.
In flats and townhouses, mice often move between units through shared walls and service ducts, so one owner treating alone may only push them next door.
How the treatment works
We start by finding where they get in and where they nest, which is usually a gap behind the stove, around a geyser pipe or under a kitchen unit. Indoors we mainly use snap traps and enclosed traps placed along the walls, because mice run close to edges and are curious enough to investigate. Where baiting is needed, it goes inside tamper-resistant stations that children and pets cannot open, after a bait risk assessment. We then seal the entry points with steel wool, mesh and sealant, because mice can squeeze through a hole about the width of a pencil. A follow-up visit checks the traps and confirms the activity has stopped.
- Look for clues
We check droppings, nests and gnawing to work out where the mice are most active.
- Find the gaps
We check behind appliances, under units and around pipes for entry points.
- Set traps
Traps and, where suitable, sealed bait stations go along the mice's runs.
- Seal entry points
Small holes are blocked with steel wool, mesh and sealant so mice cannot get back in.
- Follow-up
We come back to check the traps, clear them and leave a report.
Stopping a repeat visit
- Move cereal, pasta, rice and pet food into hard plastic or glass containers with good lids.
- Seal the gaps where pipes and cables come through walls, especially under the sink.
- Do not leave pet food out overnight in the kitchen.
- Fit brush strips to the bottom of garage and outside doors.
- Keep the garage tidy, since boxes on the floor make perfect mouse nests.
What affects the price
The price depends on how many rooms are affected, how long the mice have been there and how many gaps need sealing. A single kitchen is quicker than a whole house with mice in the walls and the garage. Follow-up visits are usually included, and the quote is free.
Mice are one pest where DIY genuinely works if you are thorough: a handful of snap traps baited with peanut butter, set against the walls, will catch a lot of them. Where people go wrong is not sealing the gaps, so if you are still catching mice after two or three weeks, it is time to call us.
Questions we get asked in Harfield Village
Do Harfield's old cottages need a beetle certificate when they are sold?
Usually yes, the buyer's bank or the sale agreement will ask for one. We inspect the accessible roof timbers and underfloor areas and report on any active infestation.
Are ultrasonic repellers worth it?
In our experience they do not solve a mouse problem. Mice get used to the sound quickly.
Why do I hear scratching under my floorboards at night?
In Harfield's raised-floor cottages it is almost always mice or rats nesting in the underfloor void. We find where they are getting in through air bricks or pipe gaps, bait, and seal up the entry points.
Do you come out to Harfield Village for mouse control?
Yes. Harfield Village is part of our regular Southern Suburbs route, along with Claremont, Kenilworth, Newlands, Rondebosch. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
If I see one mouse, are there more?
Usually, yes. Mice live in family groups and are shy, so if you see one in daylight there are probably others.
How long does mouse control take?
Most homes are clear in two to three weeks once the traps are set and the gaps are sealed.
