Stored Product Pest Control in Harfield Village

Opening a new box of cereal in Harfield Village and finding webbing inside is more common than most people think. Stored product pests are the beetles, weevils and moths that live in flour, grain, cereal, pet food, spices and dried fruit, in home pantries as well as in bakeries, mills and warehouses. In Cape Town we find the infested stock, get it out, treat the cracks and shelving where the insects hide, and set up pheromone monitoring so a new outbreak is spotted early.

Harfield Village is a pocket of narrow streets and old cottages squeezed between Claremont and Kenilworth, with plenty of cafes and restaurants on the main drag. Old buildings, lots of trees and food businesses close together mean rodents and cockroaches are always in the picture.

Stored product pests around Harfield Village

Restaurants and delis on the main road need regular checks for pantry moths and weevils in dry stock. At home, flour and nuts are the usual targets.

Most homes are semi-detached Victorian and Edwardian cottages with timber floors, suspended underfloor voids and pitched roofs. Many have been renovated, but the old air bricks, gaps around pipes and loose roof sheeting are still there. Those voids are perfect runways for rats and mice, and old timber floors and roof beams can carry wood borer.

The village lies on the flat between the railway line and the Southern Suburbs' leafy belt, with Table Mountain's eastern slopes not far off. Big oaks and plane trees drop leaves into gutters, and winter rain here is heavier than on the Cape Flats. Damp underfloor areas in winter attract fishmoths and give rodents a dry place to nest above the wet.

Roof rats and mice in ceilings and underfloor voids are the most common call. Cockroaches spread from restaurants and takeaway kitchens, and fishmoths like the old cupboards and bookshelves. Grey squirrels are a regular nuisance in the trees and roofs.

A note from the field

A lot of people think pantry insects mean a dirty kitchen. In reality they nearly always arrive in a packet from the shop, so even a spotless pantry can get them.

Signs to look for

  1. Silky webbing clumps cereal, nuts or pet food together, sometimes with small caterpillars inside.
  2. Flour has a greyish tint, a musty smell or moves slightly when you look closely.
  3. Grains of rice or maize have tiny round exit holes, or the bag has fine dust at the bottom.
  4. Pheromone traps or glue boards in a warehouse catch more beetles or moths each week.
  5. Small brown or reddish beetles walk along pantry shelves or across the kitchen counter.

How the treatment works

The first and most important step is finding and removing every infested product, because no treatment works while the insects still have food. Shelves, cracks and crevices, and the gaps behind and under cupboards and racking are vacuumed out to remove spilt product and eggs. We then apply a targeted residual treatment into cracks and crevices, and an insect growth regulator where the pest is a moth or beetle that keeps cycling through. Pheromone traps for moths and beetles go in to monitor for survivors and new arrivals. In warehouses, mills and food factories, larger infestations of bulk commodities may need fumigation, which we plan and carry out separately under the right controls.

Prevention that actually works

  • Put new bags of flour or grain in the freezer for a few days if you have had weevils before, which kills eggs inside.
  • Move flour, rice, cereal, pasta and pet food into sealed glass or hard plastic containers as soon as you get them home.
  • Wipe and vacuum pantry shelves when you restock, paying attention to corners and the gaps behind shelf supports.
  • In commercial stores, rotate stock on a first-in, first-out basis and keep pallets off walls so you can inspect behind them.
  • Buy dry goods in amounts you will use within a month or two, rather than letting big bags sit at the back of the cupboard.
Local tip for Harfield VillageCut back any branches that touch your roof by at least a metre. In Harfield, the trees are the highway for both roof rats and squirrels getting into the ceiling.

How much will it cost?

For homes, the cost depends mostly on how big the pantry is and how far the insects have spread into other cupboards. For commercial sites, the size of the storage area, the type of commodity, the level of infestation and whether fumigation is needed all affect the price. Food businesses that need regular monitoring and audit paperwork are usually best on a service contract, and we quote free after an inspection.

In a home pantry, throwing out infested food, a thorough clean and sealed containers fixes most problems, and we will happily talk you through that over the phone. Spraying insecticide in a cupboard full of food is a bad idea, so please do not. Where you need a professional is when the insects keep returning after a clean-out, or when you have a commercial store, bakery or factory where losses and audits are at stake.

Questions we get asked in Harfield Village

Do Harfield's old cottages need a beetle certificate when they are sold?

Usually yes, the buyer's bank or the sale agreement will ask for one. We inspect the accessible roof timbers and underfloor areas and report on any active infestation.

Do I have to throw everything away?

Throw away anything infested and anything open that is close to it. Unopened tins and sealed jars are generally fine once wiped down.

Can I spray inside the pantry?

We would not recommend it. A thorough clean-out and sealed storage do more, and any residual treatment should be targeted into cracks, not sprayed over shelves that hold food.

Where did these insects come from?

Usually in a packet of food bought already infested, often in small numbers you could not see. They then spread to other products in the cupboard.

Why do I hear scratching under my floorboards at night?

In Harfield's raised-floor cottages it is almost always mice or rats nesting in the underfloor void. We find where they are getting in through air bricks or pipe gaps, bait, and seal up the entry points.
