Kenwyn is a small, settled suburb tucked in east of Kenilworth, the kind of place where people have lived in the same house for decades. That is good news for spotting problems early, and a lot of what we see here is slow-building stuff: mice in a garage that nobody uses, borer in an old cupboard, ants that come back every December.
Kenwyn: what drives rodents here
House mice settle into cluttered garages and storerooms, and roof rats arrive when lemon, fig or avocado trees are fruiting. Picking up fallen fruit takes away a big food source.
Homes are mostly solid mid-century bungalows and semi-detached houses with tiled roofs, garages and decent-sized gardens, plus a handful of townhouse complexes. Plenty have flat-roofed extensions added later, and the join between old and new roof is where water and mice both tend to get in. Garages and outside rooms full of stored boxes are a common nesting spot.
The ground is flat and fairly sandy, sitting between the leafy Southern Suburbs and the edge of the Cape Flats. Winter brings steady rain and some damp in older walls, while summer is warm and fairly sheltered from the worst of the South-Easter. Mature gardens with lawns and fruit trees keep ants, crickets and rodents well fed.
Mice in garages and ceilings, Argentine ants and fishmoths are the steady regulars. Roof rats visit when fruit trees are heavy, and fleas follow pets in summer. Cockroaches are less of an issue than in denser areas, but American cockroaches do come up through older drains.
Something most people miss
Cheese is a cartoon idea. Mice prefer seeds, grains and sweet, fatty foods, which is why peanut butter is such a good trap bait.
In flats and townhouses, mice often move between units through shared walls and service ducts, so one owner treating alone may only push them next door.
Signs to look for
- Tiny footprints or tail marks in dust on top of cupboards or in the garage.
- Light scratching in the walls or under the kitchen units at night.
- A sharp, ammonia-like smell inside closed cupboards.
- Shredded paper, fabric or insulation bundled into a nest in a hidden corner.
- Nibbled corners of cereal boxes, bread bags and pet food packets.
How we handle mouse control in Kenwyn
We start by finding where they get in and where they nest, which is usually a gap behind the stove, around a geyser pipe or under a kitchen unit. Indoors we mainly use snap traps and enclosed traps placed along the walls, because mice run close to edges and are curious enough to investigate. Where baiting is needed, it goes inside tamper-resistant stations that children and pets cannot open, after a bait risk assessment. We then seal the entry points with steel wool, mesh and sealant, because mice can squeeze through a hole about the width of a pencil. A follow-up visit checks the traps and confirms the activity has stopped.

Prevention that actually works
- Move cereal, pasta, rice and pet food into hard plastic or glass containers with good lids.
- Seal the gaps where pipes and cables come through walls, especially under the sink.
- Pull the stove and fridge out once in a while and clean the crumbs and grease behind them.
- Do not leave pet food out overnight in the kitchen.
- Keep the garage tidy, since boxes on the floor make perfect mouse nests.
Pricing, honestly
The price depends on how many rooms are affected, how long the mice have been there and how many gaps need sealing. A single kitchen is quicker than a whole house with mice in the walls and the garage. Follow-up visits are usually included, and the quote is free.
Mice are one pest where DIY genuinely works if you are thorough: a handful of snap traps baited with peanut butter, set against the walls, will catch a lot of them. Where people go wrong is not sealing the gaps, so if you are still catching mice after two or three weeks, it is time to call us.
Frequently asked questions
If I see one mouse, are there more?
Usually, yes. Mice live in family groups and are shy, so if you see one in daylight there are probably others.
We are selling our Kenwyn house. Do we need a beetle certificate?
Most sale agreements and banks in the Western Cape require one. We can inspect the roof and accessible timber and provide the report you need.
Are ultrasonic repellers worth it?
In our experience they do not solve a mouse problem. Mice get used to the sound quickly.
How do mice get into the house?
Through tiny gaps around pipes, under doors, through air vents and roof edges. A gap the width of a pencil is enough.
Do you come out to Kenwyn for mouse control?
Yes. Kenwyn is part of our regular Southern Suburbs route, along with Kenilworth, Harfield Village, Lansdowne, Claremont. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
Why do the ants come back to my Kenwyn kitchen every summer?
Argentine ant colonies live in the garden and send foragers inside when it gets hot and dry. Baiting the trails outside, rather than spraying the ones you see, knocks the whole colony back.
