Epping is where a lot of Cape Town's food passes through on its way to the shelves, from the fresh produce market to cold stores and distribution warehouses. Our work here is almost all commercial, and it is shaped by audit schedules, delivery bays and the sheer volume of product coming and going.
The local picture in Epping
Pigeons roost on roof trusses and racking inside warehouses and foul product and packaging. Netting under the roof and strip curtains or fast doors at loading bays are the long-term answer.
Industria 1 and 2 are a mix of large steel-framed warehouses, older brick factories, cold storage and smaller workshop units. Roller doors stay open for long stretches while trucks load, which is the main entry point for rats, birds and flies. High roof trusses and racking give pigeons and roof rats plenty of hidden space. Older factory buildings often have floor drains and cable trenches that cockroaches use as highways.
Rodents are the priority for almost every site, because a single dropping can fail an audit. Pigeons inside warehouses, flies around produce waste and stored product insects in dry goods are the next concerns. Cockroaches show up in canteens, drains and older buildings.
Worth knowing
Bird mites are the hidden side of nesting birds. When the chicks fledge, the mites go looking for a meal and sometimes find the people inside.
Fake owls and shiny CDs work for about a week. Pigeons are not stupid, and once they realise the owl never moves they sit right next to it.
How to tell you have a problem
- A sour smell around a roof area where birds have been nesting for a long time.
- Twigs, grass and feathers sticking out from under roof tiles or panels.
- Tiny mites crawling on walls or bedding near a nest site.
- Droppings building up on ledges, walls, windowsills or under solar panels.
- Birds regularly perching in the same spots over doorways or walkways.
- Blocked gutters and downpipes full of nesting material.
Pigeon droppings are acidic, mark paintwork and roofing, and become slippery underfoot on walkways. Accumulated droppings and old nests can carry fungi and bacteria, and cleaning them up dry raises dust you do not want to breathe. Nests block gutters and cause water damage when winter rains back up into the roof. When birds leave a nest, their bird mites often wander indoors looking for a new host, which leads to itchy bites.
Our process, step by step
We start by watching where the birds actually land and nest, because proofing the wrong ledge is a waste of money. Ledges and beams get bird spikes or tensioned wire systems that stop birds settling. Larger open areas such as courtyards, loading bays and light wells get bird netting fixed to a frame so birds cannot get in at all. Gaps under solar panels and roof tiles are closed with mesh or panel skirting so pigeons cannot nest underneath. Old nests and droppings are removed first, and if bird mites are present we treat the area as well.

Stopping a repeat visit
- Do not feed pigeons near your home or business. A reliable food source keeps them coming back.
- Deal with the first nest quickly. Pigeons that breed on a site get attached to it.
- Fit mesh skirting around new solar panels at installation, before birds discover the gap.
- Close off broken air vents, missing tiles and open eaves as soon as you notice them.
- Keep refuse bins closed and clean up spilt food around outdoor eating areas.
How much will it cost?
The cost depends on how many areas need proofing, how high they are and how much access equipment is needed. Netting a large courtyard or a warehouse roof is a bigger job than spiking a few ledges. Clean-out of heavy droppings and any mite treatment are included in the free quote once we have done the site survey.
A few spikes on a low windowsill is a fine DIY job. Netting and solar panel proofing at height is not, both for safety and because poorly tensioned netting sags, traps birds and ends up looking messy. I would rather do it once and do it properly.
Bird Proofing questions from Epping
Do bird spikes hurt the birds?
No. The spikes are blunt and simply stop birds from landing comfortably. They move somewhere else.
Do you use poison on pigeons?
No. Bird proofing is about physical exclusion, which is safer and lasts longer than trying to kill birds.
Can you do commercial buildings?
Yes, a lot of our bird proofing is shops, warehouses and blocks of flats where droppings affect staff and customers.
Can you set up an audit-ready pest programme for an Epping warehouse?
Yes. We map bait stations and traps, service them on a regular schedule and keep reports so you have a clear paper trail for food safety audits.
Do you come out to Epping for bird proofing?
Yes. Epping is part of our regular Northern Suburbs route, along with Goodwood, Pinelands, Ndabeni, Elsies River. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
How do we stop pigeons nesting inside our Epping warehouse?
Netting under the roof trusses and closing gaps at the eaves stops them settling. Strip curtains or fast-closing doors at loading bays help keep them out during the day.
