Thatch Treatment in Hanover Park
Thatch Treatment in Hanover ParkFree photo ID on WhatsApp

Hanover Park is mostly blocks of flats with a lot of families under each roof. For a pest technician that means one thing: anything that starts in one unit, whether it is cockroaches, bed bugs or mice, has a stairwell and a shared wall to travel along.

Hanover Park: what drives timber pests here

Most blocks are brick and concrete with little exposed timber, so wood borer is not a major concern. Wooden cupboards and older furniture can still carry beetle, which shows as tiny round holes and fine powder.

The three and four storey council flats are the defining feature, with shared stairwells, ducting and refuse areas at ground level. There are also semi-detached houses and backyard rooms around the edges. In flats, cockroaches and bed bugs move through plumbing gaps and electrical conduits between units, so treating one flat alone seldom solves it for good.

The ground is flat Cape Flats sand, and in winter stormwater can lie around the blocks for days. Open fields between the blocks collect windblown litter when the South-Easter is pumping. That combination of damp ground in winter and dry, windy, littered open space in summer keeps rodents comfortable all year.

Something most people miss

If you have a pool or pond next to a lapa, mention it. We plan treatments under thatch so nothing drifts into the water.

A technician looking at a thatch roof checks the wall plates first. That is where rodents get in and where they nest, warm and dry, against the top of the wall.

Tell-tale signs

  1. Droppings on beams or along the top of walls under the thatch.
  2. Insects such as cockroaches or spiders falling from the ceiling.
  3. Small round exit holes in the poles, especially in the paler sapwood.
  4. Fine powder dropping from the poles or laths onto floors and furniture below.

What happens when we come out

We start by inspecting the underside of the roof, the poles, the laths and the eaves, looking for borer exit holes, frass and rodent or bird activity. Affected poles and laths are treated with a borer spray or injection designed for timber, applied to the wood rather than soaked through the thatch. For insects living in the thatch, we use a targeted residual treatment on the underside, keeping it as light as will do the job. Rodents are handled with traps and tamper-resistant bait stations placed at wall plates and entry points, and we advise on bird netting or proofing at the eaves. Fire safety of the thatch itself, such as retardant treatment, is a separate specialist job and we will tell you if it looks overdue.

  1. Roof inspection

We look at the underside of the thatch, every accessible pole and lath, and the eaves and ridge.

  2. Identify the problem

We separate active borer from old damage and confirm which insects, rodents or birds are involved.

  3. Timber treatment

Affected poles and laths are treated with borer spray or injection.

  4. Thatch and pest treatment

Insects in the thatch are treated from below and rodent stations or traps are placed.

  5. Report and recommendations

You get a report noting what was treated and any timber that a thatcher or builder should replace.

Keeping them out afterwards

  • Have open thatch ceilings in lapas and lodges checked once a year, since problems are easy to see early.
  • Keep trees and creepers trimmed back from the thatch so rodents cannot step straight onto the roof.
  • Ask your thatcher to check the poles and laths for borer whenever the roof is being repaired or re-combed.
  • Do not store firewood or boxes against the walls under the thatch, as they give insects and rodents cover.
  • Fit bird netting or wire at the eaves if birds keep pulling reed or nesting there.
Local tip for Hanover ParkIf you have cockroaches, talk to your neighbours above, below and next door before booking. When two or three flats in a stack are treated on the same day, the cockroaches have nowhere to retreat to.

How much will it cost?

The price depends on the size of the roof, how much of the structure is exposed and how many poles and laths show borer activity. A small lapa with an open underside is a very different job from a double-storey home with a closed ceiling. Rodent and bird work is added where needed, and timber that is too damaged to treat has to be replaced by a builder or thatcher.

Spraying the underside of your own thatch with a garden insecticide does very little for borer, which lives inside the poles, and soaking thatch in products not meant for it can do more harm than good. We would leave borer and rodent work in thatch to someone who does it regularly. Keeping the roof clear of overhanging trees is the one thing every owner can do themselves.

Frequently asked questions

Do you come out to Hanover Park for thatch treatment?

Yes. Hanover Park is part of our regular Cape Flats route, along with Manenberg, Lansdowne, Philippi, Athlone. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

Do you treat the thatch for fire?

No, fire retardant treatment is a specialist job for thatching contractors. We treat the pests in the roof and will point out if the thatch looks like it needs attention.

Is it worth treating my flat in Hanover Park for bed bugs if the neighbours have them too?

Yes, but it works far better if the neighbours treat at the same time. We can schedule several units in one block together and give each household a post-treatment report.

Why are there so many cockroaches in the kitchen even though I clean every day?

In flats, cockroaches often live inside the walls and ducts and come out at night, so cleaning alone cannot reach them. Gel baiting along the pipes and plumbing gaps gets to the colony where it actually lives.

Is there a guarantee?

Our treatments carry a minimum 3-month guarantee, and the report records exactly what was treated.

Will the treatment damage my thatch?

No. We treat the timbers directly and keep any treatment of the thatch itself light and targeted.

Send us a photo of the poles or powder in your Hanover Park thatch on WhatsApp and we will tell you if it looks active.
