De Waterkant is tiny, steep and packed: painted cottages, cobbled lanes, restaurants and a lot of short-term rentals. Pest work here revolves around kitchens, guest turnover and the old drains under the streets.
Stored product pests around De Waterkant
Restaurant dry stores and deli shelves need regular checks for weevils and pantry moths, especially where flour and grains come in bulk.
The core is a cluster of restored old cottages and terraced houses, many now guesthouses or holiday flats, alongside newer apartment blocks and the Cape Quarter shops. Shared walls and linked roof spaces let rodents and cockroaches travel from unit to unit without ever going outside. Conversions often leave hidden voids behind kitchen fittings. Restaurants on the ground floor with flats above are a common setup.
The suburb sits on the lower slope of Signal Hill, at the edge of the city centre and a short walk from the harbour. In summer the South-Easter funnels down the streets and packs litter into corners and gutters. Winter rain rushes down the slope into old stormwater lines, which is when rats move indoors.
German cockroaches in restaurant kitchens, rats in drains and ceilings and bed bugs in busy rentals are the big ones. Pigeons and gulls on rooftops and terraces round it out.
A note from the field
In homes with small children and pets, we lean on clean-out, sealed storage and pheromone traps rather than chemical treatment near food.
For food businesses, a pest found by a customer does far more damage than a pest found on a pheromone trap. Monitoring is about catching problems before anyone else does.
What gives them away
- Small moths flutter out when you open a cupboard, and rest on the ceiling at night.
- Grains of rice or maize have tiny round exit holes, or the bag has fine dust at the bottom.
- Pheromone traps or glue boards in a warehouse catch more beetles or moths each week.
- Insects collect in the folds of packaging or along the seams of sealed boxes and bags.
- Small brown or reddish beetles walk along pantry shelves or across the kitchen counter.
Our process, step by step
The first and most important step is finding and removing every infested product, because no treatment works while the insects still have food. Shelves, cracks and crevices, and the gaps behind and under cupboards and racking are vacuumed out to remove spilt product and eggs. We then apply a targeted residual treatment into cracks and crevices, and an insect growth regulator where the pest is a moth or beetle that keeps cycling through. Pheromone traps for moths and beetles go in to monitor for survivors and new arrivals. In warehouses, mills and food factories, larger infestations of bulk commodities may need fumigation, which we plan and carry out separately under the right controls.

Stopping a repeat visit
- Buy dry goods in amounts you will use within a month or two, rather than letting big bags sit at the back of the cupboard.
- In commercial stores, rotate stock on a first-in, first-out basis and keep pallets off walls so you can inspect behind them.
- Wipe and vacuum pantry shelves when you restock, paying attention to corners and the gaps behind shelf supports.
- Move flour, rice, cereal, pasta and pet food into sealed glass or hard plastic containers as soon as you get them home.
- Store birdseed and pet food away from the kitchen, as these are common sources of pantry moths.
Pricing, honestly
For homes, the cost depends mostly on how big the pantry is and how far the insects have spread into other cupboards. For commercial sites, the size of the storage area, the type of commodity, the level of infestation and whether fumigation is needed all affect the price. Food businesses that need regular monitoring and audit paperwork are usually best on a service contract, and we quote free after an inspection.
Stored product insects breed faster in warm weather, so infestations that started quietly in winter often become obvious from November through to March. In Cape Town's dry summers, warm pantries next to ovens and geysers are particular hot spots. In heated warehouses and bakeries the problem can carry on all year.
Stored Product Pest Control questions from De Waterkant
Why do cockroaches keep appearing in my flat above a restaurant?
German cockroaches move up service ducts and pipe gaps from busy kitchens. Treating your flat helps, but it works best when the restaurant below is treated at the same time.
Do you come out to De Waterkant for stored product pest control?
Yes. De Waterkant is part of our regular City Bowl & Atlantic Seaboard route, along with Green Point, Bo-Kaap, Foreshore, Malay Quarter. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
Where did these insects come from?
Usually in a packet of food bought already infested, often in small numbers you could not see. They then spread to other products in the cupboard.
Do bed bugs spread between units in De Waterkant's terraced houses?
They can, through shared walls, plug points and gaps around pipes. If one unit has them, we recommend inspecting the rooms on either side as well.
Can I spray inside the pantry?
We would not recommend it. A thorough clean-out and sealed storage do more, and any residual treatment should be targeted into cracks, not sprayed over shelves that hold food.
Do I have to throw everything away?
Throw away anything infested and anything open that is close to it. Unopened tins and sealed jars are generally fine once wiped down.
