Lakeside Spider Control

Found a rain spider the size of your hand on the lounge wall in Lakeside? You are not the first this month. Most spiders in Cape Town homes are harmless and even useful, but a few, like the violin spider and the button spider, deserve respect, and a heavy population usually means there is plenty of insect food around. We identify what you actually have, treat the webs, voids and entry points where they live, and deal with the insects that are feeding them.

Lakeside is squeezed between the mountain and Zandvlei, with Boyes Drive above and the railway line and Main Road running through the middle. Having both a mountain slope and a big vlei on your doorstep means you get pests from two very different directions.

The local picture in Lakeside

Damp lower-lying houses get fishmoths in cupboards and bookshelves. On the mountain side, rain spiders, baboon spiders and the odd scorpion come in from the fynbos.

Homes range from older cottages and family houses on the slopes to townhouses and small complexes nearer the vlei. A lot of the older houses have suspended timber floors and big trees in the garden, which gives rodents and borer something to work with. Garden flats and outside rooms are common and are usually the first place a pest problem gets noticed.

Expect mosquitoes and midges near the water, rats along the railway reserve, and ants almost everywhere in summer. Fishmoths and silverfish like the damp in older houses close to the vlei. Spiders and the occasional scorpion are more of a thing on the mountain side.

A note from the field

Brown button spiders have spread widely across Cape Town gardens and leave distinctive spiky round egg sacs. If you see those under garden furniture or a jungle gym, get them removed before children are playing there again.

How to tell you have a problem

  1. Someone in the house wakes with a small, red, sometimes blistered bite that was not there the night before.
  2. You keep finding small pale spiders in bedding, curtains or clothing that has been left folded.
  3. Untidy, tangled webs show up under outdoor chairs, in the meter box or around the pool pump.
  4. Cast skins and dead insects collect along skirting boards and in the backs of cupboards.
  5. Fresh webs reappear in the same corners, window frames and eaves within days of being brushed down.

What happens when we come out

We start by identifying the species, because a rain spider on the wall and a nest of button spiders by the jungle gym call for very different responses. Webs and egg sacs are removed by hand or vacuum first, which takes out a surprising amount of the next generation. We then apply a residual spray or a fine insecticide dust into the places spiders actually live: roof voids, behind fitted units, wall cavities, garages, eaves and window reveals, keeping it away from where children and pets play. Where insects are drawing the spiders in, we treat or advise on that food source too, because spiders follow their prey. Finally we point out gaps around doors, vents and pipes that need sealing.

Stopping a repeat visit

  • Shake out shoes, gardening gloves and clothes that have been left on the floor or in the garage before you put them on.
  • Swap white outdoor bulbs for warm yellow or LED ones so fewer insects gather, which means fewer spiders setting up around your doors.
  • Pull beds slightly away from the wall and keep bedding off the floor to reduce night-time bites from sac spiders.
  • Fit fine mesh to vents and seal the gaps around pipes and under doors with sealant or brush strips.
  • Keep stacked wood, bricks and old pots away from the house walls, because these are prime spots for button spiders.
Local tip for LakesideIf you live near Zandvlei, check for standing water in pot plant saucers, blocked gutters and old tyres after every rain. Mosquitoes from the vlei are hard to avoid, but you can stop them breeding in your own yard.

Pricing, honestly

The cost depends mainly on the size of the property and how many outbuildings, garages and roof spaces need treatment. A house with a heavy insect problem feeding the spiders takes more work than one with a few webs in the corners. We give a free quote after a quick look or a WhatsApp photo, and contract clients get spiders covered as part of their routine visits.

Spider activity climbs from late spring and peaks in the hot, dry months from January to March, which is exactly when rain spiders come indoors and people start to notice them. Button spiders are most visible in summer around gardens and pools. In the wet winter months many spiders retreat into roof spaces and garages, so a treatment then catches them where they shelter.

Questions we get asked in Lakeside

How do I know if I have violin spiders?

They are light brown with long legs and a darker violin-shaped mark on the front of the body, and they hide in undisturbed storerooms, cupboards and garages. Send us a clear photo on WhatsApp and we will tell you what it is.

Are the mosquitoes in Lakeside coming from Zandvlei?

Mostly, yes. Zandvlei and its wetland edges are prime breeding water in warm weather, so homes nearby notice the swarms on calm summer evenings. Clearing standing water at home and treating resting spots like dense shrubs cuts the numbers down.

What should I do if someone is bitten?

Clean the bite, keep the spider if you can safely do so for identification, and see a doctor, especially for a suspected button or violin spider bite. Do not rely on a pest controller for medical advice.

Is the rain spider in my house dangerous?

Not really. Rain spiders are big and fast but rarely bite, and the bite is painful rather than dangerous; the kindest option is to catch it under a container and put it outside.

I live near Boyes Drive. Should I worry about scorpions?

You may see the odd one, mostly after rain or in late summer when they move about. Keep rock piles and woodpiles away from the house and check shoes left outside, and call us if they keep coming indoors.
