Spider Control in Steenberg

In Steenberg the spider calls start properly once the summer heat sets in and the rain spiders come looking for a cool spot indoors. Most spiders in Cape Town homes are harmless and even useful, but a few, like the violin spider and the button spider, deserve respect, and a heavy population usually means there is plenty of insect food around. We identify what you actually have, treat the webs, voids and entry points where they live, and deal with the insects that are feeding them.

Steenberg covers two quite different places: the busy residential area near Retreat and Lavender Hill, and the wine estate and golf course on the mountain side. We work across both, and the pest problems differ a lot between them.

The local picture in Steenberg

German cockroaches spread between closely built homes, while scorpions and rain spiders appear on the mountain side. Ants are everywhere in summer.

Near the railway and Steenberg station, homes are mainly older council houses, semis and flats, often with backyard rooms. Closer to the mountain, the estate side has newer, larger homes in security developments. Dense housing makes it easy for rodents and cockroaches to spread, while large estate homes deal more with mountain-edge pests. Shops and taxi ranks along the main roads add food sources.

The Steenberg mountain rises behind the area as part of Table Mountain National Park, with vineyards on its lower slopes. Lower down, the sandy Cape Flats ground and wetlands toward Zeekoevlei and Princess Vlei bring a high water table. Winters are wet, summers hot and windy.

Rats and German cockroaches dominate in the denser areas, while mice, ants and scorpions are more typical on the estate side. Mosquitoes and fleas are common in summer.

Worth knowing

Daddy longlegs are often said to be the most venomous spider in the world with fangs too weak to bite. It is a myth. They are harmless to people and actually prey on other spiders, so a few in the corners of the house are not worth losing sleep over.

How to tell you have a problem

  1. Untidy, tangled webs show up under outdoor chairs, in the meter box or around the pool pump.
  2. Cast skins and dead insects collect along skirting boards and in the backs of cupboards.
  3. Outside lights draw a cloud of moths and midges each night with webs built right around them.
  4. Someone in the house wakes with a small, red, sometimes blistered bite that was not there the night before.
  5. You keep finding small pale spiders in bedding, curtains or clothing that has been left folded.
  6. Egg sacs, often round and papery or spiky in the case of the brown button spider, are stuck to brickwork or furniture.

What happens when we come out

We start by identifying the species, because a rain spider on the wall and a nest of button spiders by the jungle gym call for very different responses. Webs and egg sacs are removed by hand or vacuum first, which takes out a surprising amount of the next generation. We then apply a residual spray or a fine insecticide dust into the places spiders actually live: roof voids, behind fitted units, wall cavities, garages, eaves and window reveals, keeping it away from where children and pets play. Where insects are drawing the spiders in, we treat or advise on that food source too, because spiders follow their prey. Finally we point out gaps around doors, vents and pipes that need sealing.

Stopping a repeat visit

  • Keep stacked wood, bricks and old pots away from the house walls, because these are prime spots for button spiders.
  • Fit fine mesh to vents and seal the gaps around pipes and under doors with sealant or brush strips.
  • Brush down webs regularly and vacuum the corners and the backs of cupboards, which gets rid of egg sacs before they hatch.
  • Pull beds slightly away from the wall and keep bedding off the floor to reduce night-time bites from sac spiders.
  • Shake out shoes, gardening gloves and clothes that have been left on the floor or in the garage before you put them on.
Local tip for SteenbergIf you're near the Steenberg railway line, block gaps under your boundary wall and gate with concrete or mesh. Rats travel along the rail reserve and come in at ground level.

What affects the price

The cost depends mainly on the size of the property and how many outbuildings, garages and roof spaces need treatment. A house with a heavy insect problem feeding the spiders takes more work than one with a few webs in the corners. We give a free quote after a quick look or a WhatsApp photo, and contract clients get spiders covered as part of their routine visits.

Honestly, a broom, a vacuum and better outdoor lighting solve a lot of spider complaints without any chemical at all. Supermarket aerosols kill the spider you spray but do little for the ones in the roof void or wall cavity. If you suspect violin or button spiders, or you are seeing bites, get it looked at properly rather than guessing.

Spider Control questions from Steenberg

Do you service both sides of Steenberg?

Yes, we cover the residential area near Retreat and the estates on the mountain side. Treatments are tailored to each type of home.

Do you come out to Steenberg for spider control?

Yes. Steenberg is part of our regular Southern Suburbs route, along with Retreat, Lavender Hill, Tokai, Kirstenhof. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

How long does a spider treatment last?

A residual treatment keeps working for a good while, and our treatments carry a minimum 3-month guarantee. New spiders can still wander in from the garden, which is why sealing gaps and fixing outdoor lighting matters.

Why do I find scorpions in my Steenberg estate home?

Homes near the mountain border fynbos and rocky ground where scorpions live. Sealing gaps under doors and clearing rock piles near the house helps.

What should I do if someone is bitten?

Clean the bite, keep the spider if you can safely do so for identification, and see a doctor, especially for a suspected button or violin spider bite. Do not rely on a pest controller for medical advice.

Is the rain spider in my house dangerous?

Not really. Rain spiders are big and fast but rarely bite, and the bite is painful rather than dangerous; the kindest option is to catch it under a container and put it outside.

Send a photo of the spider on WhatsApp and we will tell you what it is and whether your Steenberg home needs treatment.
