Gordon's Bay is a harbour village tucked into the corner of False Bay, with houses stacked up the mountainside and holiday flats near the beach. Rodents in roofs, gulls on rooftops and ants in summer are what we deal with most.
Stored product pests around Gordon's Bay
Mostly household weevils and pantry moths in holiday homes left closed, and harbour restaurants need regular dry store checks.
Homes are built up the slopes of the Hottentots Holland mountains, many with sea views, split levels and retaining walls. Holiday flats and apartment blocks sit near the beach and harbour, and many homes are holiday properties. Houses on steep plots have sub-floor voids and garages under the house where rodents hide. Restaurants around the harbour bring commercial work.
The village sits right at the foot of the mountains, with the GB anchor above town and the sea in front. The South-Easter is famously strong here, sometimes funnelling down the mountain in powerful gusts. Fynbos on the slopes brings scorpions, spiders and rodents close to homes.
Roof rats from the mountain and gulls from the harbour are the big ones. Argentine ants, fishmoths and German cockroaches in harbour restaurants complete the picture.
From the technician
For families with young children and pets, we lean on cleaning, freezing and pheromone traps, and keep chemical treatment to carpet edges and empty cupboards.
How to tell you have a problem
- Moths are seen resting on the ceiling of the kitchen or a bedroom in the evening.
- Webbing clumps together cereal, nuts or pet food in the pantry.
- Small pale moths flutter away when you open a wardrobe or move clothes on the rail.
- Small, irregular holes appear in woollen jerseys, suits, scarves or blankets, often in hidden areas like under collars and arms.
- You find small silk tubes or cases stuck to fabric, carpets or the corners of cupboards.
- Bare patches show up in woollen rugs or carpets under beds, sofas and other heavy furniture.
Our process, step by step
Identifying the moth correctly matters most, because clothes moths and pantry moths are treated in completely different places. For clothes moths we remove and sort affected textiles, recommend washing at high temperature, dry cleaning or freezing, vacuum carpets and wardrobe floors thoroughly, and apply a residual treatment to carpet edges, skirting boards and the inside of cupboards, with an insect growth regulator where the infestation is heavy. For pantry moths we find and remove all infested food, vacuum shelving, and treat cracks and crevices where larvae pupate, keeping treatment away from food. In both cases we place species-specific pheromone traps to monitor results, since these catch male moths and show quickly whether the problem is under control.

Stopping a repeat visit
- Take clothes out of the wardrobe and shake them every few weeks, as clothes moths dislike disturbance and light.
- Keep cereals, nuts, dried fruit and pet food in airtight containers, and check birdseed before bringing it inside.
- Store woollen clothes and blankets in sealed bags or containers, not in open shelves or cardboard boxes.
- Freeze second-hand woollens, rugs or vintage clothing for a few days before putting them with your own things.
- Wash or dry clean woollens before packing them away for summer, because moths prefer fabric with sweat and food stains on it.
How much will it cost?
The cost depends on whether it is a clothes moth or pantry moth problem, the number of rooms or cupboards involved, and whether carpets and upholstery need treatment. Larger homes, guesthouses and retail spaces with many wardrobes or storage areas take more time and may need a follow-up visit. We give a free quote, usually after seeing photos or doing a quick inspection.
Both moths are more active in warm weather, so problems usually become obvious from late spring through summer. Clothes moth damage is often discovered in autumn when people pull their winter woollens out of storage for the first cold front. Heated homes and warm pantries can see moth activity all year round.
Moth Control questions from Gordon's Bay
Do mothballs work?
Traditional mothballs only work in a sealed space at high concentrations, and they have a strong smell many people dislike. Sealed storage, regular cleaning and pheromone traps are more effective.
Can you treat my Gordon's Bay holiday home while I'm away?
Yes, if access is arranged. We'll send you a post-treatment report with what we found and did.
Do gulls nesting on my Gordon's Bay roof cause problems?
Yes. They make noise and mess, block gutters and can bring bird mites. We can fit netting or spikes to stop them nesting, ideally before the breeding season starts.
Do you come out to Gordon's Bay for moth control?
Yes. Gordon's Bay is part of our regular Helderberg route, along with Strand, Somerset West, Helderberg. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
Can you treat a guesthouse or clothing shop?
Yes. We inspect stock and furnishings, treat affected areas and set up pheromone monitoring, with a report after each visit.
How long does it take to get rid of moths?
With a proper clean-out and treatment, activity drops quickly, but we keep monitoring for several weeks because eggs and larvae can survive in hidden spots.
