Marina da Gama Insect Control

Most insect calls we get from Marina da Gama turn out to be one of about six usual suspects, and each one is handled differently. Insect control is about working out which insect you actually have, where it is coming from, and stopping it there rather than spraying everything in sight. In Cape Town we deal with ants, cockroaches, fishmoths, fleas, flies, wasps and stored product pests every week, and each one needs a different approach. We follow a 4-step insect regime: find the source, map the infestation, treat it in a targeted way, and leave you with remedial recommendations so it does not come straight back.

Marina da Gama is built around a network of canals off Zandvlei, with houses that back right onto the water and little jetties at the end of the garden. Living on the water is lovely, but it also means midges, mosquitoes and rats are part of the conversation.

General pest control around Marina da Gama

Brown rats move along the canal edges and under decks and jetties. They can get into homes through gaps under doors or in the roof.

The canals connect to Zandvlei, a large estuary with reed beds and wetlands that open to False Bay. Warm, still water in summer is perfect for midges and mosquitoes. The South-Easter blows hard across the vlei, and winter storms can push the water level up.

Most homes are free-standing houses and townhouses from the 1970s onwards, many with timber decks, boathouses and jetties on the canals. The decks and boathouses give rats and spiders plenty of hiding spots. Tightly spaced houses mean a rodent problem next door can quickly become yours.

How to tell you have a problem

  1. Someone in the house is waking up with itchy bites in lines or clusters.
  2. Trails of ants run along skirting boards, plug points or window frames towards food or moisture.
  3. Paper, book spines or wallpaper show irregular grazed patches or tiny holes.
  4. Insects appear right after a cold front or heavy rain, which tells us they are coming in from the garden for shelter.
  5. You keep finding the same type of insect in one room, which usually points to a nearby source rather than a random visitor.
  6. Small dark droppings that look like ground pepper collect in cupboard corners or behind the fridge.

Something most people miss

In rental properties, insect problems often start in the unit next door or in shared drains. Landlords get the best result by treating the whole block or wing at once rather than one flat at a time.

Our process, step by step

We start with the least-toxic option that will actually work, which often means gel baits and bait stations for ants and cockroaches rather than blanket spraying. Insect growth regulators are useful where we need to break a breeding cycle, for example with fleas or a stubborn cockroach population. Residual sprays go into specific cracks, voids and entry points, not across open floors where children and pets walk. Dusts are used in wall voids, roof spaces and electrical areas where liquids are not safe. We use eco-friendly and odourless products wherever we can, and every job ends with a post-treatment report.

Prevention that actually works

  • Keep dry goods in sealed glass or hard plastic containers rather than the paper or plastic bags they came in.
  • Empty pet bowls at night and wipe up crumbs around the dog or cat feeding area.
  • Fix dripping taps and leaking geysers quickly, as most indoor insects need a reliable water source.
  • Rinse recycling and keep outside bins closed and away from kitchen doors and windows.
  • Seal gaps around pipes under sinks and behind appliances, because these are the highways insects use between rooms.
Local tip for Marina da GamaUse yellow or warm-coloured outdoor bulbs on decks and jetties facing the water. They draw far fewer midges than bright white lights, which makes summer evenings in Marina da Gama much more pleasant.

What affects the price

The price depends mainly on which insect you have and how established it is, since a few ants in one kitchen is a very different job from cockroaches in every unit of a block. Property size, how easy it is to reach roof spaces and voids, and whether follow-up visits are needed to break a breeding cycle all play a part. Businesses that want regular scheduled visits on a contract usually get better value than paying for repeated once-off call-outs, and the quote is always free.

For a handful of ants on the kitchen counter, a supermarket bait is honestly fine. Where DIY goes wrong is with cockroaches, fleas and anything that keeps coming back, because aerosol sprays kill what you can see and scatter the rest deeper into the walls. If you have tried twice and they are still there, it is time to have someone find the source.

Questions we get asked in Marina da Gama

Are there rats under my deck by the canal?

Quite possibly. The space under decks and jetties is dark and sheltered, close to water, so rats like it. We can inspect, bait safely and seal off access.

Are your insect treatments safe for pets?

We use the least-toxic option that works and place products in cracks, voids and stations rather than open areas. Let us know about pets, fish tanks or birds when you book so the technician can plan around them.

Do I need to leave the house during an insect treatment?

Usually not for very long. Gel baits and bait stations need no vacating at all, and for residual sprays we will tell you how long to keep children and pets out of the treated area, which is typically until it has dried.

Can you get rid of the midges in Marina da Gama?

Not completely, because they breed in Zandvlei itself, which we can't treat. We can reduce resting midges around your home and advise on lighting and screens to keep them out.

Can you tell what insect I have from a photo?

In most cases, yes. Send a clear close-up on WhatsApp to 021 012 5825 and we can usually identify it and tell you whether it needs treatment at all.
