Mouille Point Fumigation

Sealing a space, filling it with gas and waiting is simple on paper; doing it safely in Mouille Point takes experience. Fumigation means sealing a space, a load of timber or a batch of goods and filling it with a gas that reaches pests deep inside where sprays never get. In Cape Town people also use the word for any whole-house treatment, so the first thing we do is work out which one you actually need, then do it properly.

Mouille Point is a strip of apartment blocks facing the sea between the lighthouse and the Waterfront, so most of our work is in flats, basements and bin rooms. Sea air, shared services and a busy promenade shape almost every pest problem here.

The local picture in Mouille Point

Timber is limited to floors, fitted cupboards and doors in most flats, though old parquet can carry borer. Beetle certificates still apply on sale even for apartments.

The suburb is flat, low-lying and right on the Atlantic, with salt spray and fog rolling in on calm mornings. Green Point Park and the golf course sit behind it, and the V&A Waterfront harbour is next door. Winter storms push water up the stormwater drains, which flushes rats and cockroaches into basements.

Most people live in mid-rise and high-rise blocks along Beach Road, many built in the sixties and seventies with newer luxury developments in between. Shared refuse rooms, service ducts and basement parking connect every unit in a building, so a cockroach problem in one flat rarely stays there. Balconies facing the ocean collect gull and pigeon droppings. Body corporates usually want the whole block treated at once, which works far better than one flat at a time.

Cockroaches in apartment kitchens and ducts are the most common call, followed by rats and mice around bin rooms. Fishmoths and silverfish thrive in the damp sea air. Gulls and pigeons on balconies are a constant complaint.

Worth knowing

Fumigation leaves no residue to protect you later. It is a reset button, so what you do afterwards decides whether the pest comes back.

How to tell you have a problem

  1. Earlier surface treatments knocked the problem back but it returned within weeks.
  2. An heirloom or second-hand piece of furniture has live beetles or fresh frass coming out of it.
  3. Pests are in a place you cannot reach with a spray, such as inside packed stock or solid timber.
  4. A container or pallet load needs a treatment before it can be moved or accepted.
  5. Fine powdery dust and small round holes are appearing on wooden furniture or beams, even after you have cleaned them.
  6. Bags of grain, feed or flour have weevils or webbing inside, and the problem keeps coming back.

Fumigant gases are dangerous to people and animals, which is why fumigation is done under sheets or in sealed rooms with warning signs and nobody inside. Done badly, it either leaves pests alive deep in the material or leaves gas where it should not be. Done well, it reaches every crack in a load of timber or a pallet of stock. For a business, an untreated infestation in stored goods can mean whole batches thrown away and unhappy customers.

What happens when we come out

We start by confirming that fumigation is really needed, because a lot of jobs can be solved with a residual spray, a dust or an insect growth regulator instead. When gas is the right tool, the item or area is sealed under gas-proof sheeting or in an airtight room, the fumigant is introduced and the space is held closed for the required exposure time. Afterwards it is aired out and checked before anyone goes back in. For houses with crawling insects we use targeted gel baits, dusts and residual sprays, often with a ULV fogging pass for hard-to-reach voids. You get a written report after every treatment.

Keeping them out afterwards

  • Do not stack cardboard and pallets against walls for months; it gives pests a hiding place.
  • Inspect second-hand furniture for small exit holes and fine dust before bringing it into the house.
  • Store grain, feed and dry goods in sealed containers and use the old stock first.
  • Keep timber dry, because damp wood is far more attractive to borer beetles.
  • If you are buying an older property, include a beetle inspection in the transfer process.
Local tip for Mouille PointAsk your body corporate to schedule cockroach treatment for the whole building at once, including the refuse room and service ducts. Treating one flat on its own usually just pushes them next door and back again.

What affects the price

The price depends on whether you need gas fumigation or a standard treatment, and on the volume being treated. Sealing a whole structure or a full container takes more material and time than a single piece of furniture. Access, preparation work and any follow-up treatments are factored into the free quote.

Gas fumigation is not a DIY job, full stop. The products are restricted and dangerous, and the sealing has to be right. For crawling insects in a house, foggers from the shop mostly drive pests deeper into the walls, so you are better off with a targeted professional treatment.

Fumigation questions from Mouille Point

Is fumigation the same as spraying?

No. Fumigation uses a gas in a sealed space, while spraying applies a product to surfaces. Many people in Cape Town use the words interchangeably, which is why we check what you need first.

Do you come out to Mouille Point for fumigation?

Yes. Mouille Point is part of our regular City Bowl & Atlantic Seaboard route, along with Green Point, Three Anchor Bay, Sea Point, De Waterkant. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

Will fumigation leave a smell?

Once a space has been properly aired, there should be little or no lingering smell. We use odourless products where we can.

Does fumigation stop pests coming back?

Gas kills what is there but leaves no lasting protection, so prevention and sometimes a residual treatment afterwards matter.

How do I stop gulls messing on my Mouille Point balcony?

Bird netting or a tension wire system over the balcony is the most effective option, and spikes help on narrow ledges. We remove nests and clean up first so the birds do not keep returning.

Do cockroaches in Mouille Point flats come from the sea or the drains?

The drains, mostly. American cockroaches live in the sewer and stormwater lines and come up through floor drains and ducts, especially after winter storms.
