The Bo-Kaap climbs up the slopes of Signal Hill above the city centre, with brightly painted houses, cobbled streets and the oldest mosque in South Africa on Dorp Street. Homes here are packed close together and often very old, so pests like rats, cockroaches and pigeons move easily from one roof to the next.
Bo-Kaap: what drives general pest control here
Mosques, madrassas and guest houses often ask for disinfection, particularly before Ramadan, Eid and busy tourist months. Small rooms and halls fog quickly with little disruption.
The suburb sits on the lower slopes of Signal Hill, with steep streets that catch the full force of the South-Easter as it comes off Table Mountain. Winter rain runs down the hill and can soak old walls, encouraging fishmoths and damp-loving insects. The city centre below provides food and shelter for rodents.
Most homes are flat-roofed terraced houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, many with thick walls, old timber beams and small backyards. Flat roofs and parapet walls give pigeons places to roost and nest. Shared walls and old drainage pipes let cockroaches and rodents travel between neighbours.
How to tell you have a problem
- A container or pallet load needs a treatment before it can be moved or accepted.
- Pests are in a place you cannot reach with a spray, such as inside packed stock or solid timber.
- An heirloom or second-hand piece of furniture has live beetles or fresh frass coming out of it.
- Bags of grain, feed or flour have weevils or webbing inside, and the problem keeps coming back.
Worth knowing
Not every borer problem needs gas. Exposed roof timbers can often be treated by spraying and injection instead, which costs less and needs less disruption.
Fumigation leaves no residue to protect you later. It is a reset button, so what you do afterwards decides whether the pest comes back.
How the treatment works
We start by confirming that fumigation is really needed, because a lot of jobs can be solved with a residual spray, a dust or an insect growth regulator instead. When gas is the right tool, the item or area is sealed under gas-proof sheeting or in an airtight room, the fumigant is introduced and the space is held closed for the required exposure time. Afterwards it is aired out and checked before anyone goes back in. For houses with crawling insects we use targeted gel baits, dusts and residual sprays, often with a ULV fogging pass for hard-to-reach voids. You get a written report after every treatment.

Keeping them out afterwards
- Keep timber dry, because damp wood is far more attractive to borer beetles.
- Store grain, feed and dry goods in sealed containers and use the old stock first.
- If you are buying an older property, include a beetle inspection in the transfer process.
- Inspect second-hand furniture for small exit holes and fine dust before bringing it into the house.
- Do not stack cardboard and pallets against walls for months; it gives pests a hiding place.
What affects the price
The price depends on whether you need gas fumigation or a standard treatment, and on the volume being treated. Sealing a whole structure or a full container takes more material and time than a single piece of furniture. Access, preparation work and any follow-up treatments are factored into the free quote.
Gas fumigation is not a DIY job, full stop. The products are restricted and dangerous, and the sealing has to be right. For crawling insects in a house, foggers from the shop mostly drive pests deeper into the walls, so you are better off with a targeted professional treatment.
Fumigation questions from Bo-Kaap
Do you come out to Bo-Kaap for fumigation?
Yes. Bo-Kaap is part of our regular City Bowl & Atlantic Seaboard route, along with Malay Quarter, Schotsche Kloof, De Waterkant, City Bowl. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
Will fumigation leave a smell?
Once a space has been properly aired, there should be little or no lingering smell. We use odourless products where we can.
Does fumigation stop pests coming back?
Gas kills what is there but leaves no lasting protection, so prevention and sometimes a residual treatment afterwards matter.
Are Bo-Kaap's old houses more prone to wood borer?
They can be, because many still have original timber beams and floors. A proper inspection will show whether the beetles are active and what treatment is safe for heritage timber.
Can you fumigate a single piece of furniture?
Yes. Antiques and wooden furniture with active borer are often sealed and treated on their own.
Why do pigeons like Bo-Kaap flat roofs so much?
The parapet walls and flat roofs give them sheltered ledges to roost and nest. Netting or spikes on parapets, plus clearing nests, usually move them on.
