Flying Insect Control Upper Woodstock

Picture a restaurant in Upper Woodstock at lunchtime, and a single blowfly doing laps of the dining room. Flying insect problems in Cape Town usually come down to flies, mosquitoes, wasps, moths or small drain and fruit flies, and each one breeds somewhere different. We find where they are breeding, deal with that source first, and then knock down the adults with targeted treatments and monitoring that suit a home, a restaurant or a warehouse.

Upper Woodstock is the old residential heart of Woodstock, climbing from Victoria Road towards Devil's Peak. Rows of Victorian cottages, many lovingly restored, sit shoulder to shoulder, and their age and closeness explain most of what we find here.

The local picture in Upper Woodstock

Flies gather around bins in the narrow lanes, and mosquitoes breed in courtyard pots and drains. Wasps are less common than in garden suburbs.

The Devil's Peak slopes are close, and the South-Easter funnels down the streets with surprising force in summer. Winter rain soaks old brickwork, and many cottages have damp walls and floors. Historic stormwater drains under the streets are home to rats and cockroaches.

Terraced and semi-detached Victorian cottages with pressed-steel ceilings, timber floors and narrow back yards are the norm. Shared walls and connected roof spaces let rats and mice move freely from one house to the next. Renovations sometimes open up old gaps that let pests in.

What gives them away

  1. Small moths flutter out of the pantry or out of a cupboard full of woollens.
  2. Flies keep gathering around the same window, light or rubbish area even after you have cleaned and sprayed.
  3. Small flies hover over the fruit bowl, the recycling bin or the drip tray under a bar tap.
  4. Paper wasps are coming and going from the same spot under the eaves, a gutter or a garden umbrella.
  5. A sudden swarm of large blowflies appears indoors, which often points to something dead in the roof or wall.
  6. Tiny moth-like flies sit on bathroom walls near the shower or basin drain.

Worth knowing

For landlords, flying insect complaints often come down to maintenance: a cracked drain, a missing window screen or a bin area that floods. Fixing those is cheaper than repeat treatments.

The first thing a technician checks is not the fly but the place it keeps landing. Where an insect rests tells us a lot about where it came from and which treatment will reach it.

What happens when we come out

We start by identifying the insect properly, because a drain fly needs a completely different fix from a house fly or a mosquito. Breeding sites come first: drains are cleaned out and treated with a larvicide or bio-enzyme product, standing water is tipped or treated, and waste areas are sorted out. Only then do we use residual sprays on resting surfaces such as window frames and wall tops, fly bait stations away from food, and ULV fogging where a large space needs a quick knockdown. In commercial kitchens and food stores we install insect light traps with glue boards so there is constant monitoring between visits. Wasp nests are treated with a dust or spray directly into the nest and removed once the colony is dead.

Prevention that actually works

  • Keep wheelie bins closed, rinse them out in summer, and park them away from the kitchen door.
  • Fit fly screens on kitchen windows and keep a self-closing door or strip curtain on back doors that open onto bins.
  • Pour boiling water down slow drains weekly and scrub the inside of the drain pipe with a brush, since that slime is where drain flies breed.
  • Store flour, cereal and pet food in sealed containers so pantry moths have nothing to breed in.
  • Check eaves, carports and garden furniture in early spring for small paper wasp nests while they are still easy to deal with.
Local tip for Upper WoodstockTalk to your neighbours before treating for rats, because in a row of connected cottages they will just move next door. Agreeing to treat together and sealing roof gaps at the same time saves everyone money.

What affects the price

The price depends on which insect we are treating, because a single wasp nest is a very different job from a fly problem in a large food factory. The size of the property, how many breeding sites there are and how hard they are to get at, such as roof voids or sealed drains, all affect the time on site. Commercial sites with light traps and scheduled visits are usually best quoted as a contract, and we give free quotes once we know what is flying.

Flying insects peak from about October to March, when hot weather speeds up breeding and a fly can go from egg to adult in around a week. The south-easter keeps numbers down on the exposed side of the city but pushes flies indoors in sheltered suburbs, and mosquitoes often surge after the last winter rains leave water lying around. Wasps build their nests in spring and are at their most defensive in late summer when colonies are biggest.

Questions we get asked in Upper Woodstock

Do restored Victorian floors in Upper Woodstock need borer treatment?

Not always, but older pine is prone to common furniture beetle. If you see small round holes or fine powder, it is worth having it inspected.

Do insect light traps actually work?

Yes, in the right place. They catch flies that get past your doors and screens and, just as usefully, the glue boards show us what is getting in and how many, which is why food businesses rely on them.

Do you come out to Upper Woodstock for flying insect control?

Yes. Upper Woodstock is part of our regular City Bowl & Atlantic Seaboard route, along with Woodstock, Walmer Estate, University Estate, Salt River. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

Why do I still have flies after spraying?

Because spray only kills the adults that are flying at the time. New ones keep hatching from the breeding site, so until that is found and dealt with, the flies keep coming back.

Why do rats keep returning to my Upper Woodstock cottage?

In terraced rows, rats move through shared roof spaces and old drains. A joint treatment with neighbours, plus sealing the gaps in your roof and floor, gives lasting results.

Can you treat a whole business, not just a house?

Yes. Restaurants, food factories, warehouses and offices usually go onto a contract with scheduled visits, monitoring and a report for each service.
