Flying Insect Control Panorama

Picture a restaurant in Panorama at lunchtime, and a single blowfly doing laps of the dining room. Flying insect problems in Cape Town usually come down to flies, mosquitoes, wasps, moths or small drain and fruit flies, and each one breeds somewhere different. We find where they are breeding, deal with that source first, and then knock down the adults with targeted treatments and monitoring that suit a home, a restaurant or a warehouse.

Panorama is a hillside suburb with big homes, sloping gardens and views across to Table Mountain. The homes are mostly well kept, so problems here tend to be about access points: roof gaps, solar panels and garden edges.

Panorama: what drives flying insects here

Paper wasps nest under eaves and pergolas. Flies increase in summer around bins and pets.

The suburb sits on the slopes of the Tygerberg hills, where summers are hot and dry and winters cold and wet. The wind can be strong on exposed ridges. Open veld and nature areas nearby bring wildlife and insects close to homes.

Most homes are large freestanding houses built from the seventies onward, many with double storeys, tiled roofs and big garages. Solar panels and roof additions create gaps that pigeons and rats use. Retaining walls and terraced gardens provide hiding places for rodents and insects. Some homes border open land on the hills.

Rats in roofs, ants in summer and pigeons under solar panels are the most frequent calls. Wasps, fleas and fishmoths also come up regularly. Scorpions occasionally appear in homes near the veld.

How to tell you have a problem

  1. Small moths flutter out of the pantry or out of a cupboard full of woollens.
  2. Paper wasps are coming and going from the same spot under the eaves, a gutter or a garden umbrella.
  3. Tiny moth-like flies sit on bathroom walls near the shower or basin drain.
  4. A sudden swarm of large blowflies appears indoors, which often points to something dead in the roof or wall.

A note from the field

With small children and pets in the house, we lean heavily on physical fixes, baits placed out of reach and drain treatments, and keep spraying to the places that really need it.

How we handle flying insect control in Panorama

We start by identifying the insect properly, because a drain fly needs a completely different fix from a house fly or a mosquito. Breeding sites come first: drains are cleaned out and treated with a larvicide or bio-enzyme product, standing water is tipped or treated, and waste areas are sorted out. Only then do we use residual sprays on resting surfaces such as window frames and wall tops, fly bait stations away from food, and ULV fogging where a large space needs a quick knockdown. In commercial kitchens and food stores we install insect light traps with glue boards so there is constant monitoring between visits. Wasp nests are treated with a dust or spray directly into the nest and removed once the colony is dead.

Stopping a repeat visit

  • Store flour, cereal and pet food in sealed containers so pantry moths have nothing to breed in.
  • Fit fly screens on kitchen windows and keep a self-closing door or strip curtain on back doors that open onto bins.
  • Tip out pot plant saucers, birdbaths and anything else that holds water for more than a few days.
  • Check eaves, carports and garden furniture in early spring for small paper wasp nests while they are still easy to deal with.
  • Keep wheelie bins closed, rinse them out in summer, and park them away from the kitchen door.
Local tip for PanoramaHave solar panels meshed around the edges as soon as they are installed. Pigeons find the gap within weeks, and their nests bring mites and droppings.

What affects the price

The price depends on which insect we are treating, because a single wasp nest is a very different job from a fly problem in a large food factory. The size of the property, how many breeding sites there are and how hard they are to get at, such as roof voids or sealed drains, all affect the time on site. Commercial sites with light traps and scheduled visits are usually best quoted as a contract, and we give free quotes once we know what is flying.

Fly swatters, screens and a good bin routine handle a lot of household fly problems, and we would rather you did that than empty a can of spray into the kitchen. Where DIY falls down is when the source is hidden, like a dead rat in the ceiling, a broken drain under the floor or a wasp nest in a wall cavity. If you are still seeing the same insects two weeks after cleaning up, the breeding site is somewhere you have not found yet.

Flying Insect Control questions from Panorama

How quickly can you come out?

We aim for around 48 hours, though it varies with the season, and we can do after-hours or weekend visits on request.

Can you treat a whole business, not just a house?

Yes. Restaurants, food factories, warehouses and offices usually go onto a contract with scheduled visits, monitoring and a report for each service.

Why do I still have flies after spraying?

Because spray only kills the adults that are flying at the time. New ones keep hatching from the breeding site, so until that is found and dealt with, the flies keep coming back.

How do I stop pigeons nesting under my solar panels in Panorama?

Fit a mesh skirt around the panel edges after clearing out any nests. It is the most reliable fix and does not damage the panels.

Do you come out to Panorama for flying insect control?

Yes. Panorama is part of our regular Northern Suburbs route, along with Plattekloof, Parow, Monte Vista, Bellville. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

Why do rats get into Panorama roofs if the house is well kept?

Even small gaps at roof joins, solar panel fittings or vents are enough. We inspect the roof line and seal the entry points as part of the treatment.

Send a photo of the insect to us on WhatsApp and we will tell you what it is and how we would treat it in Panorama.
