Flying Insect Control Kenwyn

Paper wasps under the eaves, drain flies in the shower and fruit flies in the kitchen are all common calls from Kenwyn. Flying insect problems in Cape Town usually come down to flies, mosquitoes, wasps, moths or small drain and fruit flies, and each one breeds somewhere different. We find where they are breeding, deal with that source first, and then knock down the adults with targeted treatments and monitoring that suit a home, a restaurant or a warehouse.

Kenwyn is a small, settled suburb tucked in east of Kenilworth, the kind of place where people have lived in the same house for decades. That is good news for spotting problems early, and a lot of what we see here is slow-building stuff: mice in a garage that nobody uses, borer in an old cupboard, ants that come back every December.

Flying insects in Kenwyn: what we see

Paper wasps build under eaves and inside garden sheds, and fruit flies gather round the compost. Mosquitoes are a small after-rain problem in gutters and bird baths.

The ground is flat and fairly sandy, sitting between the leafy Southern Suburbs and the edge of the Cape Flats. Winter brings steady rain and some damp in older walls, while summer is warm and fairly sheltered from the worst of the South-Easter. Mature gardens with lawns and fruit trees keep ants, crickets and rodents well fed.

Mice in garages and ceilings, Argentine ants and fishmoths are the steady regulars. Roof rats visit when fruit trees are heavy, and fleas follow pets in summer. Cockroaches are less of an issue than in denser areas, but American cockroaches do come up through older drains.

Something most people miss

For landlords, flying insect complaints often come down to maintenance: a cracked drain, a missing window screen or a bin area that floods. Fixing those is cheaper than repeat treatments.

What gives them away

  1. Small moths flutter out of the pantry or out of a cupboard full of woollens.
  2. A sudden swarm of large blowflies appears indoors, which often points to something dead in the roof or wall.
  3. You hear whining at night and wake up with fresh bites on exposed arms and ankles.
  4. Flies keep gathering around the same window, light or rubbish area even after you have cleaned and sprayed.
  5. Paper wasps are coming and going from the same spot under the eaves, a gutter or a garden umbrella.

What happens when we come out

We start by identifying the insect properly, because a drain fly needs a completely different fix from a house fly or a mosquito. Breeding sites come first: drains are cleaned out and treated with a larvicide or bio-enzyme product, standing water is tipped or treated, and waste areas are sorted out. Only then do we use residual sprays on resting surfaces such as window frames and wall tops, fly bait stations away from food, and ULV fogging where a large space needs a quick knockdown. In commercial kitchens and food stores we install insect light traps with glue boards so there is constant monitoring between visits. Wasp nests are treated with a dust or spray directly into the nest and removed once the colony is dead.

Stopping a repeat visit

  • Tip out pot plant saucers, birdbaths and anything else that holds water for more than a few days.
  • Pour boiling water down slow drains weekly and scrub the inside of the drain pipe with a brush, since that slime is where drain flies breed.
  • Keep wheelie bins closed, rinse them out in summer, and park them away from the kitchen door.
  • Check eaves, carports and garden furniture in early spring for small paper wasp nests while they are still easy to deal with.
  • Store flour, cereal and pet food in sealed containers so pantry moths have nothing to breed in.
Local tip for KenwynClear out the garage at least once a year and get boxes off the floor onto shelves. Mice nest in the bottom box that has not been moved since the last move.

Pricing, honestly

The price depends on which insect we are treating, because a single wasp nest is a very different job from a fly problem in a large food factory. The size of the property, how many breeding sites there are and how hard they are to get at, such as roof voids or sealed drains, all affect the time on site. Commercial sites with light traps and scheduled visits are usually best quoted as a contract, and we give free quotes once we know what is flying.

Fly swatters, screens and a good bin routine handle a lot of household fly problems, and we would rather you did that than empty a can of spray into the kitchen. Where DIY falls down is when the source is hidden, like a dead rat in the ceiling, a broken drain under the floor or a wasp nest in a wall cavity. If you are still seeing the same insects two weeks after cleaning up, the breeding site is somewhere you have not found yet.

Questions we get asked in Kenwyn

Why do the ants come back to my Kenwyn kitchen every summer?

Argentine ant colonies live in the garden and send foragers inside when it gets hot and dry. Baiting the trails outside, rather than spraying the ones you see, knocks the whole colony back.

We are selling our Kenwyn house. Do we need a beetle certificate?

Most sale agreements and banks in the Western Cape require one. We can inspect the roof and accessible timber and provide the report you need.

Is fogging safe for my pets and children?

Fogging is only used where it is needed, and people and pets stay out until the product has settled and the room has been aired. We tell you exactly how long to wait before we start.

Do you come out to Kenwyn for flying insect control?

Yes. Kenwyn is part of our regular Southern Suburbs route, along with Kenilworth, Harfield Village, Lansdowne, Claremont. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

How quickly can you come out?

We aim for around 48 hours, though it varies with the season, and we can do after-hours or weekend visits on request.

Why do I still have flies after spraying?

Because spray only kills the adults that are flying at the time. New ones keep hatching from the breeding site, so until that is found and dealt with, the flies keep coming back.
