West Beach is the strip between Table View and Bloubergstrand, built on dune land right behind the beach. Wind, sand and salt rule here, and most of the pest issues we see are shaped by being a stone's throw from the sea.
The local picture in West Beach
Black ants nest in the sand under paving and along walls, and fishmoths thrive in the damp sea air. Spiders and crickets come in from the dunes.
Homes are mostly modern freestanding houses and townhouses, many with flat roofs, big windows and paved courtyards. There are also apartment complexes and a few holiday homes that stand empty for parts of the year. Courtyards and enclosed patios trap blown sand and leaf litter, giving ants and other crawlers a place to settle.
The area is built on coastal dunes, so the soil is soft sand that ants and burrowing insects love. The South-Easter blows constantly in summer, and winter brings cold Atlantic fronts. The beach and dune vegetation are home to rodents and plenty of insects.
Ants are the most common call because of the sandy ground. Mice and rats from the dune vegetation follow close behind. Gulls and pigeons are a problem on flat roofs, and fishmoths like damp coastal homes.
Signs to look for
- Birds and hadedas probing the lawn intensively, which is often a sign of mole crickets or other insects underneath.
- Raised, soft ridges and tunnels in the lawn, especially after watering.
- Large numbers of crickets attracted to outside lights on warm nights.
- Patches of grass that brown and die, and lift easily because the roots have been cut.
- Small chewed holes in clothing, curtains or paper stored in damp places.
From the technician
A common myth is that crickets are a sign of a dirty home. They are mostly drawn in by light, warmth and damp, and a spotless house with a gap under the patio door can have just as many.
What happens when we come out
Indoors, we focus on finding where the crickets are coming in and hiding, then apply a residual treatment to entry points, door thresholds, garage edges and other hiding spots. Granular baits can be used around the perimeter of the house to reduce numbers before they reach the walls. For mole crickets, the lawn is treated with a targeted product and watered in so it reaches the tunnels, and timing matters because young mole crickets near the surface are easier to control. We use the least-toxic effective option and avoid spraying open living areas.

Keeping them out afterwards
- Clear leaf litter, mulch, firewood and garden rubbish away from the walls of the house.
- Keep the garage and storeroom tidy and dry, since crickets love damp cardboard and clutter.
- Water the lawn deeply but less often, as constantly damp soil suits mole crickets.
- Fit brush strips under exterior doors and garage doors so crickets cannot walk straight in.
- Seal cracks in walls and around window frames, and check that airbricks have intact mesh.
Pricing, honestly
The cost depends on whether it is an indoor nuisance, a lawn problem or both, and on the size of the property and garden. A large lawn with widespread mole cricket damage takes more product and time than a perimeter treatment for a house. Follow-up treatments, if needed to catch a second generation, are included in a free quote upfront.
Field crickets are loudest and most noticeable in the warm months from late spring through summer. They often move indoors in autumn as the nights cool down and the first rains arrive. Mole cricket damage to lawns shows up most in spring and summer when they are active near the surface.
Cricket Control questions from West Beach
Do you come out to West Beach for cricket control?
Yes. West Beach is part of our regular Blaauwberg & West Coast route, along with Table View, Bloubergstrand, Parklands. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
Is the lawn treatment safe for pets?
We use a targeted product and water it in. Keep pets off the treated area until it has dried, and we will give you specific guidance on the day.
Can you stop gulls landing on my West Beach roof?
Yes. Bird wire, spikes and solar panel guards make the roof much less comfortable for gulls and pigeons.
What is damaging my lawn with tunnels?
If you see raised ridges and spongy patches with dying grass, mole crickets are a likely cause. Flood a patch with soapy water and they often come to the surface, which confirms it.
Why are ants so bad in West Beach homes?
The suburb sits on dune sand, which makes perfect nesting ground right under paving and along walls. Baiting the colony at the source gives better results than spraying the trails.
Why can I never find the chirping cricket?
Crickets stop chirping when they sense vibration or movement nearby, and the sound bounces off walls, which makes it hard to pinpoint. Turning off lights and moving slowly helps.
