Blouberg is all about the wind, the sand and that postcard view of Table Mountain across the bay. Pests here are shaped by coastal strandveld, holiday flats that stand empty for weeks, and a lot of newer complexes built on what used to be dune.
The local picture in Bloubergstrand
Fishmoths love the damp, closed-up feel of holiday flats, and Argentine ants dig easily in the sandy gardens. Spiders and crickets come in from the strandveld in late summer.
You get a mix of older beach cottages near Small Bay, blocks of holiday apartments along the beachfront and newer townhouse estates stretching back towards Big Bay and Parklands. Lock-up flats and seasonal homes are where pantry moths and cockroaches quietly build up while nobody is looking. In the estates, mice and rats move along shared boundary walls and under the timber decks that so many homes have.
Mice and rats coming in from the strandveld are the biggest issue, particularly in autumn. Fishmoths, ants and German cockroaches do well in closed-up holiday flats. Gulls and pigeons on balconies and roofs keep many body corporates busy.
How to tell you have a problem
- Crickets sheltering in the garage, under appliances or behind skirting boards.
- Loud chirping at night that stops as soon as you walk towards it.
- Large numbers of crickets attracted to outside lights on warm nights.
- Birds and hadedas probing the lawn intensively, which is often a sign of mole crickets or other insects underneath.
- Small chewed holes in clothing, curtains or paper stored in damp places.
- Patches of grass that brown and die, and lift easily because the roots have been cut.
From the technician
A common myth is that crickets are a sign of a dirty home. They are mostly drawn in by light, warmth and damp, and a spotless house with a gap under the patio door can have just as many.
Mole crickets are often blamed on lawn grubs or dry patches, and people keep watering a lawn that is actually being cut from below. The soap water test is a cheap way to find out.
What happens when we come out
Indoors, we focus on finding where the crickets are coming in and hiding, then apply a residual treatment to entry points, door thresholds, garage edges and other hiding spots. Granular baits can be used around the perimeter of the house to reduce numbers before they reach the walls. For mole crickets, the lawn is treated with a targeted product and watered in so it reaches the tunnels, and timing matters because young mole crickets near the surface are easier to control. We use the least-toxic effective option and avoid spraying open living areas.
- Identify the cricket
Field crickets, house crickets and mole crickets behave differently and need different treatments.
- Locate entry and shelter
We look at door gaps, garage doors, airbricks and cluttered areas where crickets hide during the day.
- Treat the perimeter
A residual barrier and, where useful, granular bait go around the outside of the house and entry points.
- Treat the lawn
For mole crickets, the affected areas of lawn are treated and watered in so the product reaches the tunnels.
- Report and advice
You get a post-treatment report with tips on lighting, sealing and garden habits that reduce numbers.
Keeping them out afterwards
- Swap bright white outside lights for yellow or warm-coloured bulbs, which attract fewer insects.
- Clear leaf litter, mulch, firewood and garden rubbish away from the walls of the house.
- Keep the garage and storeroom tidy and dry, since crickets love damp cardboard and clutter.
- Seal cracks in walls and around window frames, and check that airbricks have intact mesh.
- Fit brush strips under exterior doors and garage doors so crickets cannot walk straight in.
Pricing, honestly
The cost depends on whether it is an indoor nuisance, a lawn problem or both, and on the size of the property and garden. A large lawn with widespread mole cricket damage takes more product and time than a perimeter treatment for a house. Follow-up treatments, if needed to catch a second generation, are included in a free quote upfront.
Field crickets are loudest and most noticeable in the warm months from late spring through summer. They often move indoors in autumn as the nights cool down and the first rains arrive. Mole cricket damage to lawns shows up most in spring and summer when they are active near the surface.
Frequently asked questions
Do crickets attract other pests?
Yes, large numbers of crickets can draw in spiders, geckos and sometimes scorpions, which feed on them. Reducing crickets often reduces those too.
Do the dunes behind Bloubergstrand bring pests into homes?
Yes, the strandveld and nature reserve are home to mice, spiders and crickets that move into houses as the weather changes. Sealing gaps under doors and around vents cuts most of it out.
Do you come out to Bloubergstrand for cricket control?
Yes. Bloubergstrand is part of our regular Blaauwberg & West Coast route, along with Table View, Parklands, West Beach, Melkbosstrand. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
What is damaging my lawn with tunnels?
If you see raised ridges and spongy patches with dying grass, mole crickets are a likely cause. Flood a patch with soapy water and they often come to the surface, which confirms it.
Why do I get mice in my Blouberg flat when it is on the third floor?
Mice and rats climb through service ducts, lift shafts and gaps around pipes, especially in older beachfront blocks. Treating the building's common areas along with your unit works best.
Is the lawn treatment safe for pets?
We use a targeted product and water it in. Keep pets off the treated area until it has dried, and we will give you specific guidance on the day.
