Bird Proofing in Montague Gardens
Bird Proofing in Montague GardensFree photo ID on WhatsApp

Montague Gardens is mostly warehouses, showrooms and distribution yards, so the calls we get here are about stock, loading bays and compliance rather than bedrooms. A rat in a food warehouse is a bigger problem than a rat in a garage, because one gnawed pallet can mean a rejected consignment.

The local picture in Montague Gardens

Pigeons love the open roof trusses of the big sheds and leave droppings on stock and floors. Netting the underside of the roof or fitting spikes on ledges above doors is usually the lasting answer.

Big steel-framed sheds with roller doors, mezzanine offices and long racking aisles make up most of the area, with a few trade counters and factory shops mixed in. Roller doors that stand open all day are the main entry point for rodents and birds. Racking that goes up to the roof gives mice somewhere quiet to nest where nobody looks for months. Ceiling voids above the offices tend to be where the droppings turn up first.

Something most people miss

Fake owls and shiny CDs work for about a week. Pigeons are not stupid, and once they realise the owl never moves they sit right next to it.

Proofing over an active nest is a mistake. You either trap birds inside or they break through, so the clean-out always comes first.

How to tell you have a problem

  1. Birds regularly perching in the same spots over doorways or walkways.
  2. Tiny mites crawling on walls or bedding near a nest site.
  3. Droppings building up on ledges, walls, windowsills or under solar panels.
  4. Blocked gutters and downpipes full of nesting material.

Our process, step by step

We start by watching where the birds actually land and nest, because proofing the wrong ledge is a waste of money. Ledges and beams get bird spikes or tensioned wire systems that stop birds settling. Larger open areas such as courtyards, loading bays and light wells get bird netting fixed to a frame so birds cannot get in at all. Gaps under solar panels and roof tiles are closed with mesh or panel skirting so pigeons cannot nest underneath. Old nests and droppings are removed first, and if bird mites are present we treat the area as well.

  1. Site survey

We look at where the birds roost, nest and enter, and which surfaces need protecting.

  2. Proposal

We recommend the right mix of netting, spikes, wire or mesh for each spot and explain why.

  3. Clean-out

Nests, droppings and debris are removed safely before anything is fitted.

  4. Install proofing

Netting, spikes, wire or mesh is fixed so it is neat and secure against the south-easter.

  5. Mite treatment and report

If bird mites are present we treat the area, and you get a written report.

Keeping them out afterwards

  • Fit mesh skirting around new solar panels at installation, before birds discover the gap.
  • Deal with the first nest quickly. Pigeons that breed on a site get attached to it.
  • Keep refuse bins closed and clean up spilt food around outdoor eating areas.
  • Do not feed pigeons near your home or business. A reliable food source keeps them coming back.
  • Clean gutters before winter, and check for nesting material at the same time.
Local tip for Montague GardensKeep roller doors shut when the bay is not in use and fit brush strips to the bottom edge, because a 12 mm gap is enough for a young rat. Move skips a few metres away from the building wall if the yard allows it.

Pricing, honestly

The cost depends on how many areas need proofing, how high they are and how much access equipment is needed. Netting a large courtyard or a warehouse roof is a bigger job than spiking a few ledges. Clean-out of heavy droppings and any mite treatment are included in the free quote once we have done the site survey.

A few spikes on a low windowsill is a fine DIY job. Netting and solar panel proofing at height is not, both for safety and because poorly tensioned netting sags, traps birds and ends up looking messy. I would rather do it once and do it properly.

Questions we get asked in Montague Gardens

Do bird spikes hurt the birds?

No. The spikes are blunt and simply stop birds from landing comfortably. They move somewhere else.

Can you stop pigeons nesting under my solar panels?

Yes. We clean out the nests and fit mesh skirting around the panel edges so birds cannot get underneath.

Do you come out to Montague Gardens for bird proofing?

Yes. Montague Gardens is part of our regular Blaauwberg & West Coast route, along with Milnerton, Table View, Goodwood, Maitland. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

Will netting be visible?

Bird netting is fine and usually black or clear, so from the ground it is hard to see once it is fitted.

Can you do pest control in Montague Gardens warehouses after hours?

Yes, after-hours and weekend visits are available on request, which suits sites that cannot stop operations during the day. Let us know your shift times when you ask for a quote.

Our auditor wants pest control records for our Montague Gardens premises. Do you provide those?

Yes, every treatment comes with a post-treatment report. For ongoing service we can keep a bait station map and inspection log to show the auditor.
