Bird Proofing Higgovale

Before the winter rains arrive in Higgovale, check your gutters for nests. Bird proofing stops pigeons and other birds from roosting and nesting on your building by physically blocking them out. Across Cape Town and the Boland we fit netting, spikes and mesh to ledges, roof gaps and solar panels so the birds simply move on, without poisons.

Higgovale sits high on the slopes below Table Mountain and Lion's Head, with Kloof Nek just above. The houses are big and often right up against the mountain, so we deal with as many visitors from the slopes as we do from the street.

Higgovale: what drives birds here

Pigeons roost under solar panels and on flat roofs. Rock pigeons and red-winged starlings also nest in gutters and eaves.

Homes here are mostly large, architect-designed houses on steep plots with retaining walls, pools and multiple levels. There are some older homes with timber roofs and floors, and many newer ones with flat concrete roofs and glass. Split levels, garages dug into the slope and gaps around wooden decks give rodents plenty of hidden spaces to nest.

Higgovale backs onto Table Mountain National Park, with fynbos, pine and gum trees above and the Kloof Nek area close by. Winter rain runs down the slopes, and the mountain stays damp and cool for longer than the City Bowl below. The mountain edge brings scorpions, spiders, field mice and the occasional dassie or snake into gardens.

Signs to look for

  1. Twigs, grass and feathers sticking out from under roof tiles or panels.
  2. Birds regularly perching in the same spots over doorways or walkways.
  3. A sour smell around a roof area where birds have been nesting for a long time.
  4. Blocked gutters and downpipes full of nesting material.
  5. Tiny mites crawling on walls or bedding near a nest site.

Something most people miss

For landlords and body corporates, pigeon problems become a tenant complaint quickly. Proofing the common areas once beats cleaning them every week.

Proofing over an active nest is a mistake. You either trap birds inside or they break through, so the clean-out always comes first.

How the treatment works

We start by watching where the birds actually land and nest, because proofing the wrong ledge is a waste of money. Ledges and beams get bird spikes or tensioned wire systems that stop birds settling. Larger open areas such as courtyards, loading bays and light wells get bird netting fixed to a frame so birds cannot get in at all. Gaps under solar panels and roof tiles are closed with mesh or panel skirting so pigeons cannot nest underneath. Old nests and droppings are removed first, and if bird mites are present we treat the area as well.

  1. Site survey

We look at where the birds roost, nest and enter, and which surfaces need protecting.

  2. Proposal

We recommend the right mix of netting, spikes, wire or mesh for each spot and explain why.

  3. Clean-out

Nests, droppings and debris are removed safely before anything is fitted.

  4. Install proofing

Netting, spikes, wire or mesh is fixed so it is neat and secure against the south-easter.

  5. Mite treatment and report

If bird mites are present we treat the area, and you get a written report.

Keeping them out afterwards

  • Keep refuse bins closed and clean up spilt food around outdoor eating areas.
  • Fit mesh skirting around new solar panels at installation, before birds discover the gap.
  • Clean gutters before winter, and check for nesting material at the same time.
  • Deal with the first nest quickly. Pigeons that breed on a site get attached to it.
  • Close off broken air vents, missing tiles and open eaves as soon as you notice them.
Local tip for HiggovaleKeep a clear strip of a metre or so between the mountain-side wall and any plants, wood piles or garden clutter. Scorpions and rodents use that cover to reach the house unseen.

What affects the price

The cost depends on how many areas need proofing, how high they are and how much access equipment is needed. Netting a large courtyard or a warehouse roof is a bigger job than spiking a few ledges. Clean-out of heavy droppings and any mite treatment are included in the free quote once we have done the site survey.

A few spikes on a low windowsill is a fine DIY job. Netting and solar panel proofing at height is not, both for safety and because poorly tensioned netting sags, traps birds and ends up looking messy. I would rather do it once and do it properly.

Bird Proofing questions from Higgovale

Do you come out to Higgovale for bird proofing?

Yes. Higgovale is part of our regular City Bowl & Atlantic Seaboard route, along with Tamboerskloof, Oranjezicht, Gardens, Camps Bay. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

Do mice come down from Table Mountain into Higgovale homes?

Yes, especially in the cold, wet months. We look for entry points along the slope side of the house, garage doors and roof edges, then set up bait and seal the gaps.

Are the scorpions in Higgovale dangerous?

Most of the ones found in mountain-side gardens have big pincers and thin tails, and their sting is painful rather than dangerous, but anyone stung should still get medical advice. We can treat the perimeter and lower rooms to reduce how many come inside.

Do you use poison on pigeons?

No. Bird proofing is about physical exclusion, which is safer and lasts longer than trying to kill birds.

Why am I getting bites after the pigeons left?

That is often bird mites leaving an abandoned nest. They do not live on people, but they bite, and we treat the nest area to stop them.

Can you do commercial buildings?

Yes, a lot of our bird proofing is shops, warehouses and blocks of flats where droppings affect staff and customers.
