Sunnydale shares the valley floor with Sun Valley but feels a bit more open, with the Noordhoek wetlands and Kommetjie Road close by. Pest work here tends to be about keeping the outdoors outdoors: the bush, the vlei and the wildlife all press right up against people's homes.
Flying insects in Sunnydale: what we see
Mosquitoes breed in the wetland and in ponds or water features inside complexes. Wasps build under eaves and in thatch lapas during summer.
The valley holds water in winter, with wetland and vlei areas towards Noordhoek and Lake Michelle. The Silvermine and Chapman's Peak mountains rise on either side, so cool damp air settles here at night. Strong summer winds funnel through the valley and drive insects towards sheltered walls and stoeps.
You will find a mix of family homes, townhouse complexes and several newer gated developments, many with face brick walls and tiled roofs. Complexes share boundary walls and green spaces, so a rodent or ant problem in one unit often affects the whole row. A few properties have thatched lapas or wooden outbuildings that need extra attention.
Mosquitoes and midges near the wetlands are a big summer complaint. Rodents and Argentine ants are year-round regulars, while fleas, spiders and fishmoths show up in the damp months. Pigeons and Egyptian geese bother complexes with open lawns and water features.
What gives them away
- Wasps fly out when you open a roller shutter, a garden umbrella or the lid of a pool pump box.
- Someone has been stung near the front door, gate motor, letterbox or washing line.
- You hear a scratching or buzzing noise from inside a wall or ceiling near an outside vent.
- A grey papery comb is hanging under the eave, gutter, carport or window frame with wasps sitting on it.
From the technician
Burning a nest with a rolled-up newspaper is a very old idea and a very bad one. It rarely kills the colony, the wasps scatter, and we have seen fascia boards and thatch catch alight.
How we handle wasp nest removal in Sunnydale
We start with a look at the nest from a safe distance to identify the species, judge its size and work out the access. The colony is treated directly with an insecticidal dust or spray puffed into the comb or the entrance hole, ideally early in the morning or at dusk when most of the wasps are home and slower. Once the wasps are dead, the comb is cut down, bagged and taken away, and old combs nearby are removed too so the spot does not attract a new queen. For nests inside cavities, the dust is worked into the entrance and the hole is only sealed once activity has stopped, because blocking it early can push the wasps indoors. Where a native, harmless species is nesting somewhere out of the way, we will tell you honestly that it can be left.

Keeping them out afterwards
- Do not block an entrance hole in a wall before the colony is dead, or the wasps may find a way into the house.
- After removal, check the same spot every week or two in spring, since a new queen may try the same site.
- Close windows near the nest and keep pets indoors, because dogs often snap at wasps and get stung in the mouth.
- If you are allergic to stings, keep your prescribed medication with you during summer garden work.
- Paint or seal the underside of eaves and fill gaps in fascia boards so there are fewer rough, sheltered surfaces to attach a comb to.
How much will it cost?
The price of removing a wasp nest depends mostly on access, so a nest at head height under a carport is quicker than one at the top of a double-storey gable or inside a wall. The number of nests on the property and the size of each one also matter, as does whether a follow-up visit is needed for cavity nests. We give a free quote, often straight from a WhatsApp photo.
A golf-ball sized nest with a few wasps can be knocked off at dusk by someone who is not allergic, and we have no problem saying so. Anything bigger, anything above ladder height and anything inside a wall is where we would strongly suggest calling us. Most of the bad stings we hear about come from someone with a broom and a can of spray at midday.
Frequently asked questions
What do you do with the nest?
Once the colony is dead, we cut the comb down, bag it and take it away so it cannot be reused or attract more wasps.
Is it safe to spray a nest myself?
It is risky with a large nest, because a can of spray rarely kills the whole colony and the survivors get very defensive. Small nests at dusk are another story.
How quickly can you remove a wasp nest?
Our average turnaround is around 48 hours, depending on the season. If a nest is right by a door or someone is allergic, tell us, and we can arrange an after-hours or weekend visit on request.
How do I stop Egyptian geese messing around our pool in Sunnydale?
Pool covers, reflective deterrents and making lawns less inviting are the practical options. We can advise on bird deterrent options that suit your property without harming the birds.
Why is my Sunnydale complex overrun with ants every summer?
Argentine ants form supercolonies that stretch across several gardens, so treating one unit only moves them next door. A complex-wide baiting programme works far better.
Do you come out to Sunnydale for wasp nest removal?
Yes. Sunnydale is part of our regular South Peninsula route, along with Sun Valley, Noordhoek, Masiphumelele, Fish Hoek. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
