Rugby is a small, older residential pocket squeezed between Brooklyn, the Ysterplaat air base and the industry of Paarden Eiland. Homes here sit very close to warehouses and busy roads, so rodents are never far away.
The local picture in Rugby
Weevils and pantry moths show up in homes and in the small shops and food stores around the area.
Most houses are modest, older brick homes and semis on small plots, often with backyard rooms or workshops added on. A few streets have small flats and businesses mixed in. Old roofs and outbuildings give rats somewhere to nest, and shared boundary walls let them move from yard to yard. The neighbouring industrial zone has warehouses, yards and food storage that keep rodent numbers high.
The area is flat and sandy, close to Table Bay and exposed to the wind. Open ground around Ysterplaat and the low-lying land toward the old Salt River mouth hold water in winter. Wind, sand and nearby industry together make rats and flies the big seasonal issues.
Rats are top of the list, with German cockroaches, flies and fleas following. Pigeons are a nuisance on the bigger buildings nearby.
Worth knowing
Freezing is underrated. A few days in the freezer kills eggs and larvae in flour, rice and grains without affecting the food.
A lot of people think pantry insects mean a dirty kitchen. In reality they nearly always arrive in a packet from the shop, so even a spotless pantry can get them.
What gives them away
- Flour has a greyish tint, a musty smell or moves slightly when you look closely.
- Small brown or reddish beetles walk along pantry shelves or across the kitchen counter.
- Insects collect in the folds of packaging or along the seams of sealed boxes and bags.
- Grains of rice or maize have tiny round exit holes, or the bag has fine dust at the bottom.
- Silky webbing clumps cereal, nuts or pet food together, sometimes with small caterpillars inside.
How the treatment works
The first and most important step is finding and removing every infested product, because no treatment works while the insects still have food. Shelves, cracks and crevices, and the gaps behind and under cupboards and racking are vacuumed out to remove spilt product and eggs. We then apply a targeted residual treatment into cracks and crevices, and an insect growth regulator where the pest is a moth or beetle that keeps cycling through. Pheromone traps for moths and beetles go in to monitor for survivors and new arrivals. In warehouses, mills and food factories, larger infestations of bulk commodities may need fumigation, which we plan and carry out separately under the right controls.

Prevention that actually works
- Store birdseed and pet food away from the kitchen, as these are common sources of pantry moths.
- In commercial stores, rotate stock on a first-in, first-out basis and keep pallets off walls so you can inspect behind them.
- Move flour, rice, cereal, pasta and pet food into sealed glass or hard plastic containers as soon as you get them home.
- Wipe and vacuum pantry shelves when you restock, paying attention to corners and the gaps behind shelf supports.
- Put new bags of flour or grain in the freezer for a few days if you have had weevils before, which kills eggs inside.
What affects the price
For homes, the cost depends mostly on how big the pantry is and how far the insects have spread into other cupboards. For commercial sites, the size of the storage area, the type of commodity, the level of infestation and whether fumigation is needed all affect the price. Food businesses that need regular monitoring and audit paperwork are usually best on a service contract, and we quote free after an inspection.
In a home pantry, throwing out infested food, a thorough clean and sealed containers fixes most problems, and we will happily talk you through that over the phone. Spraying insecticide in a cupboard full of food is a bad idea, so please do not. Where you need a professional is when the insects keep returning after a clean-out, or when you have a commercial store, bakery or factory where losses and audits are at stake.
Questions we get asked in Rugby
Can I spray inside the pantry?
We would not recommend it. A thorough clean-out and sealed storage do more, and any residual treatment should be targeted into cracks, not sprayed over shelves that hold food.
Are these insects harmful if I eat them by accident?
They are not known to be dangerous in small amounts, but infested food is contaminated and should not be eaten or sold.
Do you work in warehouses and food factories?
Yes. We do inspections, crack and crevice treatment, pheromone monitoring and scheduled visits, with reports you can use for food safety audits.
Do the rats in Rugby come from the Paarden Eiland warehouses?
A lot of them do. Industrial yards hold food and shelter, and rats move into nearby homes when conditions change, so proofing your boundary is important.
Do you come out to Rugby for stored product pest control?
Yes. Rugby is part of our regular Blaauwberg & West Coast route, along with Brooklyn, Milnerton, Maitland, Kensington. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
Can you treat my Rugby home and my small workshop together?
Yes, we can cover both in one visit and tailor the treatment to each building. You'll get a post-treatment report for both.
