Ndabeni is a compact industrial and business area wedged between Pinelands, Maitland and the railway. Our work here is commercial: warehouses, workshops, offices and food businesses that need dependable rodent and insect control.
Rodents in Ndabeni: what we see
Norway rats burrow along the railway and river edges and move into yards under gates and roller doors. Ongoing bait station programmes outside the buildings, with traps inside, keep them in check.
The area is a patchwork of older brick factories, newer business park units and storage warehouses with roller doors. Many buildings are decades old with cracked slabs, gaps under doors and open roof eaves that let in rodents and birds. Offices with suspended ceilings sit above or next to storage areas, so rodents in the warehouse end up in the office ceiling. Shared yards and bin areas link neighbouring businesses.
The Black River and the green open space toward Raapenberg lie just to the south, giving rodents cover and water close by. Railway reserves and the N2 edge are full of rough ground. Flat, sandy soil drains quickly in summer but can pool after big winter downpours.
Rats and mice are the most common issue, followed by cockroaches in canteens and pigeons in roof spaces. Food and packaging businesses also need watching for stored product pests. Flies cluster around refuse areas in summer.
From the technician
When a technician inspects for squirrels, the first thing he looks at is the trees around the house, because the branches show where the squirrels are jumping onto the roof.
How to tell you have a problem
- Shredded insulation, leaves and twigs found in the roof space.
- Chewed fascia boards, barge boards or roof edges with fresh wood exposed.
- Scratching and running in the ceiling in the early morning and late afternoon, rather than at night.
- Squirrels seen jumping from a tree onto the roof and disappearing under the tiles.
- Chewed electrical cables or damaged ceiling boards.
- Dug-up pot plants and bulbs, and nuts buried in garden beds.
How we handle squirrel control in Ndabeni
We do not use poison for squirrels. Our approach is exclusion: we find every entry point and fit one-way exclusion devices so the squirrels can get out but not back in. Where it makes sense, live cage traps are used to remove squirrels from the roof. Once the roof is empty, we close the gaps with steel mesh and repair chewed areas so they cannot get back in. We also advise on trimming branches that give squirrels easy access to the roof.

Keeping them out afterwards
- Use metal mesh, not plastic, over roof vents and gaps.
- Trim tree branches so they are at least two metres away from the roof.
- Pick up acorns and fallen fruit regularly if you have big trees close to the house.
- Check fascia boards and roof edges each year for chewed spots and repair them quickly.
- Do not feed squirrels in the garden, however cute they are.
Pricing, honestly
The cost depends on how many entry points there are, how high the roof is and how much repair and proofing is needed. A single gap is quick to deal with, but an older roof with many chewed areas takes longer. Trapping and follow-up visits are included in the free quote.
You can trim the trees and fix obvious gaps yourself, but sealing a roof with squirrels still inside is a mistake that leads to trapped animals and more damage. Getting them out humanely and proofing the whole roof line properly is a job worth getting professional help for.
Questions we get asked in Ndabeni
How do I know it is squirrels and not rats?
Squirrels are active during the day, especially early morning, while rats are mostly active at night.
Can squirrels damage my roof?
Yes. They chew fascia boards, roof edges and cables, and they nest in insulation.
Will you hurt the squirrels?
No. We use one-way exclusion devices and live traps, not poison.
Do you come out to Ndabeni for squirrel control?
Yes. Ndabeni is part of our regular Southern Suburbs route, along with Pinelands, Maitland, Observatory, Thornton. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
Why do we keep seeing rats at our Ndabeni warehouse even after baiting?
Usually because they are still getting food and shelter on site, or reinvading from the railway and river edges. Sealing doors, clearing rough ground and maintaining stations together breaks the cycle.
Can you service our Ndabeni business on a regular schedule?
Yes. We can set up a recurring programme with bait stations, inspections and a report each visit, and work after hours if your operations need it.
