Spider Control in Table View

Webs back in the window frames two days after you cleaned them is a common story from homes around Table View. Most spiders in Cape Town homes are harmless and even useful, but a few, like the violin spider and the button spider, deserve respect, and a heavy population usually means there is plenty of insect food around. We identify what you actually have, treat the webs, voids and entry points where they live, and deal with the insects that are feeding them.

Table View is big, busy and windy, with the famous postcard view of Table Mountain across the bay. Between the beachfront, the Rietvlei wetland and the shopping strips along Blaauwberg Road, we see a bit of everything here.

Table View: what drives crawling insects here

Black ants and Argentine ants nest in the sandy soil and trail inside in summer. German cockroaches are common in flats and food outlets, and fishmoths like the stored boxes in garages.

Much of the suburb is face-brick family homes from the seventies onward, with plenty of newer townhouse complexes and apartment blocks filling in the gaps. Busy centres and restaurants along Blaauwberg Road and Koeberg Road bring commercial pest work. Many homes have flat-roofed extensions and wendy houses that create easy shelter for rodents.

Ants and German cockroaches are probably our most common calls, with mosquitoes close behind for homes near Rietvlei. Rats and mice keep restaurants and complexes busy, and pigeons foul the shopping centres and flat roofs.

Worth knowing

Spraying the skirting boards in every room is usually a waste. Spiders spend the day in voids, roof spaces and behind fitted units, so that is where the treatment needs to go.

Tell-tale signs

  1. You keep finding small pale spiders in bedding, curtains or clothing that has been left folded.
  2. Someone in the house wakes with a small, red, sometimes blistered bite that was not there the night before.
  3. Untidy, tangled webs show up under outdoor chairs, in the meter box or around the pool pump.
  4. Fresh webs reappear in the same corners, window frames and eaves within days of being brushed down.
  5. Cast skins and dead insects collect along skirting boards and in the backs of cupboards.

How we handle spider control in Table View

We start by identifying the species, because a rain spider on the wall and a nest of button spiders by the jungle gym call for very different responses. Webs and egg sacs are removed by hand or vacuum first, which takes out a surprising amount of the next generation. We then apply a residual spray or a fine insecticide dust into the places spiders actually live: roof voids, behind fitted units, wall cavities, garages, eaves and window reveals, keeping it away from where children and pets play. Where insects are drawing the spiders in, we treat or advise on that food source too, because spiders follow their prey. Finally we point out gaps around doors, vents and pipes that need sealing.

Stopping a repeat visit

  • Fit fine mesh to vents and seal the gaps around pipes and under doors with sealant or brush strips.
  • Swap white outdoor bulbs for warm yellow or LED ones so fewer insects gather, which means fewer spiders setting up around your doors.
  • Shake out shoes, gardening gloves and clothes that have been left on the floor or in the garage before you put them on.
  • Brush down webs regularly and vacuum the corners and the backs of cupboards, which gets rid of egg sacs before they hatch.
  • Keep stacked wood, bricks and old pots away from the house walls, because these are prime spots for button spiders.
Local tip for Table ViewClean out the tracks of your sliding doors and fit weather strips, because the South-Easter blows sand and ants in through exactly those gaps. If you live near Rietvlei, check gutters after rain so they do not hold standing water.

How much will it cost?

The cost depends mainly on the size of the property and how many outbuildings, garages and roof spaces need treatment. A house with a heavy insect problem feeding the spiders takes more work than one with a few webs in the corners. We give a free quote after a quick look or a WhatsApp photo, and contract clients get spiders covered as part of their routine visits.

Honestly, a broom, a vacuum and better outdoor lighting solve a lot of spider complaints without any chemical at all. Supermarket aerosols kill the spider you spray but do little for the ones in the roof void or wall cavity. If you suspect violin or button spiders, or you are seeing bites, get it looked at properly rather than guessing.

Spider Control questions from Table View

Will the treatment harm my pets?

We treat cracks, voids and roof spaces rather than open floors, and we ask that pets are kept out until surfaces are dry. We will explain any specific precautions on the day.

Is the rain spider in my house dangerous?

Not really. Rain spiders are big and fast but rarely bite, and the bite is painful rather than dangerous; the kindest option is to catch it under a container and put it outside.

Do you come out to Table View for spider control?

Yes. Table View is part of our regular Blaauwberg & West Coast route, along with Bloubergstrand, Parklands, Milnerton, West Beach. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

Why do I have so many spiders this year?

Usually because there is more for them to eat. A warm spell, a lot of outdoor lighting or an underlying insect problem will bring spiders in behind it.

Are the mosquitoes in Table View worse near Rietvlei?

Yes, homes along the wetland edge get the most. We can treat breeding spots on your property and advise on screens, but the vlei itself is a protected wetland and stays as it is.

Why do I get ants in my Table View house every summer?

The sandy soil here is perfect for ant nests, often right under paving or along your foundations. Targeted baiting near the nest gives longer relief than spraying the trails.

Send a photo of the spider on WhatsApp and we will tell you what it is and whether your Table View home needs treatment.
