Mouse Control in Noordhoek

How did a mouse get into a Noordhoek house with all the doors shut? Through a gap you have never noticed. Mice get into Cape Town homes through gaps you would never notice and then live in the kitchen cupboards, behind the stove and inside the walls. We track them down, trap them and close the gaps so the next family of mice cannot follow them in.

Noordhoek still has a semi-rural feel, with smallholdings, horses, wetlands and big gardens running down to Long Beach. That means flies, rodents around feed stores and thatch problems are more common here than in town.

Rodents in Noordhoek: what we see

Rats and mice are drawn to horse feed, chicken food and compost on smallholdings. Bait stations must be placed carefully so pets, horses and wildlife cannot reach them.

Properties range from old farmhouses and thatched cottages on smallholdings to newer houses in security estates and the busy Farm Village area. Stables, tack rooms, chicken runs and feed sheds are common and attract rats and mice. Thatched roofs need regular checks for borer and nesting birds. Many homes are spread out with outbuildings, which gives pests more places to hide.

Signs to look for

  1. A sharp, ammonia-like smell inside closed cupboards.
  2. Shredded paper, fabric or insulation bundled into a nest in a hidden corner.
  3. Light scratching in the walls or under the kitchen units at night.
  4. Small droppings about the size of a grain of rice in drawers, cupboards and along skirtings.

A note from the field

Cheese is a cartoon idea. Mice prefer seeds, grains and sweet, fatty foods, which is why peanut butter is such a good trap bait.

Mice do not need to drink much water, because they get most of it from their food. That is why they can live happily in a dry pantry.

How the treatment works

We start by finding where they get in and where they nest, which is usually a gap behind the stove, around a geyser pipe or under a kitchen unit. Indoors we mainly use snap traps and enclosed traps placed along the walls, because mice run close to edges and are curious enough to investigate. Where baiting is needed, it goes inside tamper-resistant stations that children and pets cannot open, after a bait risk assessment. We then seal the entry points with steel wool, mesh and sealant, because mice can squeeze through a hole about the width of a pencil. A follow-up visit checks the traps and confirms the activity has stopped.

Stopping a repeat visit

  • Pull the stove and fridge out once in a while and clean the crumbs and grease behind them.
  • Move cereal, pasta, rice and pet food into hard plastic or glass containers with good lids.
  • Seal the gaps where pipes and cables come through walls, especially under the sink.
  • Do not leave pet food out overnight in the kitchen.
  • Fit brush strips to the bottom of garage and outside doors.
Local tip for NoordhoekStore horse feed and poultry food in sealed metal bins and sweep up spilled grain daily. That one habit cuts rodent problems on Noordhoek smallholdings more than anything else.

How much will it cost?

The price depends on how many rooms are affected, how long the mice have been there and how many gaps need sealing. A single kitchen is quicker than a whole house with mice in the walls and the garage. Follow-up visits are usually included, and the quote is free.

Mice are one pest where DIY genuinely works if you are thorough: a handful of snap traps baited with peanut butter, set against the walls, will catch a lot of them. Where people go wrong is not sealing the gaps, so if you are still catching mice after two or three weeks, it is time to call us.

Questions we get asked in Noordhoek

Can you treat rats on a Noordhoek smallholding without risking horses or dogs?

Yes. We use tamper-resistant bait stations placed where animals cannot reach them, and use traps where needed, choosing the least-toxic effective option.

Do you come out to Noordhoek for mouse control?

Yes. Noordhoek is part of our regular South Peninsula route, along with Kommetjie, Masiphumelele, Fish Hoek, Sun Valley. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

Do thatched roofs in Noordhoek need borer treatment?

They often do, especially older thatch with poles and laths that have been damp. We inspect the thatch and timber and advise on treatment and a beetle certificate if you are selling.

Are ultrasonic repellers worth it?

In our experience they do not solve a mouse problem. Mice get used to the sound quickly.

How long does mouse control take?

Most homes are clear in two to three weeks once the traps are set and the gaps are sealed.

Do you use poison in the kitchen?

We prefer traps in kitchens and food areas. If bait is needed, it is kept in sealed stations.

Send us a photo of the droppings on WhatsApp and we will confirm whether you have mice in your Noordhoek home.
