Mouse Control for Kalk Bay homes and businesses

Mouse control in Kalk Bay is mostly about traps, patience and sealing small holes. Mice get into Cape Town homes through gaps you would never notice and then live in the kitchen cupboards, behind the stove and inside the walls. We track them down, trap them and close the gaps so the next family of mice cannot follow them in.

Kalk Bay is squeezed between the mountain and the sea, with a busy fishing harbour, Main Road restaurants and old cottages stacked up the slope. Fish, food and old buildings together mean rats, cockroaches and gulls are part of daily life.

Rodents in Kalk Bay: what we see

Norway rats feed around the harbour, fish cleaning areas and restaurant bins, and move into homes through old stone walls. Roof rats also come down from the mountain slopes.

Most homes are old fishermen's cottages and Victorian houses built close together on steep ground, many with timber floors and pitched roofs. Along Main Road there are shops, galleries and restaurants in older buildings. Old stonework, retaining walls and underfloor voids give rodents plenty of hiding places.

A note from the field

When we arrive for mice, the first place we check is behind the stove and under the sink. Those two spots explain most kitchen infestations.

What gives them away

  1. Light scratching in the walls or under the kitchen units at night.
  2. Small droppings about the size of a grain of rice in drawers, cupboards and along skirtings.
  3. Nibbled corners of cereal boxes, bread bags and pet food packets.
  4. Shredded paper, fabric or insulation bundled into a nest in a hidden corner.
  5. A sharp, ammonia-like smell inside closed cupboards.

Mice urinate constantly as they move, which contaminates food, crockery and work surfaces. They can carry salmonella and other bacteria into kitchen areas, which is a real problem for food businesses and homes with babies. They chew through wiring behind appliances and inside walls, and they ruin stored linen, paperwork and books. Because a female mouse can have a new litter every few weeks, a couple of mice quickly becomes a cupboard full.

How the treatment works

We start by finding where they get in and where they nest, which is usually a gap behind the stove, around a geyser pipe or under a kitchen unit. Indoors we mainly use snap traps and enclosed traps placed along the walls, because mice run close to edges and are curious enough to investigate. Where baiting is needed, it goes inside tamper-resistant stations that children and pets cannot open, after a bait risk assessment. We then seal the entry points with steel wool, mesh and sealant, because mice can squeeze through a hole about the width of a pencil. A follow-up visit checks the traps and confirms the activity has stopped.

Stopping a repeat visit

  • Seal the gaps where pipes and cables come through walls, especially under the sink.
  • Pull the stove and fridge out once in a while and clean the crumbs and grease behind them.
  • Do not leave pet food out overnight in the kitchen.
  • Fit brush strips to the bottom of garage and outside doors.
  • Move cereal, pasta, rice and pet food into hard plastic or glass containers with good lids.
Local tip for Kalk BayRestaurant owners should keep fish and food waste in sealed bins and have them emptied daily, especially in summer. Rats and gulls find open bins within hours.

How much will it cost?

The price depends on how many rooms are affected, how long the mice have been there and how many gaps need sealing. A single kitchen is quicker than a whole house with mice in the walls and the garage. Follow-up visits are usually included, and the quote is free.

Mice are one pest where DIY genuinely works if you are thorough: a handful of snap traps baited with peanut butter, set against the walls, will catch a lot of them. Where people go wrong is not sealing the gaps, so if you are still catching mice after two or three weeks, it is time to call us.

Questions we get asked in Kalk Bay

Why do gulls keep nesting on my roof in Kalk Bay?

Flat or low-pitched roofs near the harbour are ideal nesting spots, and there is plenty of food nearby. Bird proofing with spikes, wires or netting before the breeding season keeps them off.

If I see one mouse, are there more?

Usually, yes. Mice live in family groups and are shy, so if you see one in daylight there are probably others.

Do you come out to Kalk Bay for mouse control?

Yes. Kalk Bay is part of our regular South Peninsula route, along with St James, Muizenberg, Fish Hoek, Clovelly. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

What is the best bait for a mouse trap?

Peanut butter works better than cheese, and only a small dab is needed so the mouse has to work at it.

How long does mouse control take?

Most homes are clear in two to three weeks once the traps are set and the gaps are sealed.

Do the rats in Kalk Bay come from the harbour?

Many do. The harbour and restaurant bins are a reliable food source, so rats move into nearby homes and shops, and we focus bait stations and proofing on those routes.
